As the year is progressing, we are entering the comfortable touring and display season. It appears that our hobby is in demand with some events clashing. This year the Charters Towers Swap Meet (Friday 10th to Sunday 11th June), and not a long weekend, clashes with All British Day (Sunday 11th June). The All British Day is restricted entry to British vehicles, so not all members can attend. On the other hand, The Charters Towers Swap is open to allcomers. In previous years, our club has made the Sunday the day we visit Charters Towers. We can do that again this year, but without the British cars. Or, we can make Saturday the day to visit Charters Towers and Sunday the day to attend the ABD. It is up to you and to let Gary know so he can plan for getting members to and from the venues safely.

This Sunday is the Townsville Heritage Day, centered on the West End Cemetery park. Hopefully we will see many of you there.

I would like to take this opportunity the thank all members of the club that made the Hub Rally the success it was. There were many pleasing aspects which resulted from the good planning by the organising committee. There was also a pleasing absence of complaints from the participants, although some suggestions for improvement were received.

Domenic and Laura’s 1925 Model T Ford UpdateLaura and I purchased our Model T Ford late Octo-ber 2016 from Gumtree.

When I went to view the car it was stored in a shipping container and in boxes. I purchased the car without knowing exactly how much of the car was missing, what exact year model it was or what I was getting myself into. I was originally told it

was a 1923 however after piecing the car together and doing some research I found out I have a 1925 Dalgety bodied Ford.

I have been restoring the car for a few months now, in my very full 2 bay garage. Due to the space limitations I have adopted a restore, wrap and hide inside policy to minimise clutter in the garage.

I still have a long way to go but bit by bit I am getting there. I look forward to one day getting the car finished and on the road.

I am still missing parts so if anyone has any in-formation or could point me in the right direction, please contact me on 0408 252 072

Mary Anderson - InventorMary Anderson (February 19, 1866 – June 27 1953) was an American real estate developer, rancher, viticulturist and inventor of the wind-shield wiper blade. In November 1903 Anderson was granted her first patent[2] for an automatic car window cleaning device controlled inside the car, called the windshield wiper.[3]

Early life

Mary Anderson was born in Greene County, Alabama, at the start of Reconstruction in 1866. In 1889 she moved with her widowed mother and sister to the booming town of Birmingham, Alabama. She built the Fairmont Apartments on

Highland Avenue soon after settling in. By 1893, Mary Anderson had moved west to Fresno, Cali-fornia where until 1898 she operated a cattle ranch and vineyard.

Invention of the windshield wiper

In a visit to New York City in the winter of 1902, in a trolley car on a frosty day, she observed that the motorman drove with both panes of the double front window open because of difficulty keeping the windshield clear of falling sleet.[4] When she returned to Alabama she hired a designer for a hand-operated device to keep a windshield clear and had a local company produce a working mod-

el. She applied for, and in 1903 was granted, a 17-year patent for a windshield wiper. Her device con-sisted of a lever inside the vehicle that controlled a rubber blade on the outside of the windshield. The lever could be operated to cause the spring-loaded arm to move back and forth across the windshield. A counterweight was used to ensure contact be-tween the wiper and the window. Similar devices had been made earlier, but Anderson’s was the first to be effective.

In 1905 Anderson tried to sell the rights to her invention through a noted Canadian firm, but they rejected her application saying “we do not consider it to be of such commercial value as would warrant our undertaking its sale.” After the patent expired in 1920 and the automobile manufacturing busi-ness grew exponentially, windshield wipers using Anderson’s basic design became standard equip-ment. In 1922, Cadillac became the first car manu-facturer to adopt them as standard equipment.

Later life

Anderson resided in Birmingham, where she con-tinued to manage the Fairmont Apartments until her death at the age of 87. At the time of her death she was the oldest member of South Highland Presbyterian Church. She died at her summer home in Monteagle, Tennessee. Her funeral was conduct-ed by Dr. Frank A Mathes at South Highland and she was buried at Elmwood Cemetery.
