A transaction processing system, or TPS, is a systemto capture and process the detailed informationnecessary to update data on the fundamentaloperations of an organization.

A TPS typically does not contain very detailedanalytical functions. If a manager wanted toanalyze trends in the sales information, for example, the data would be exported to another informationsystem for more detailed processing and analysis.

However, a TPS is critical since it collects andorganizes all the raw data necessary to supporthigher-level information systems.

Decision Support System A Decision Support System, or DSS, is a specialized

information system designed to facilitate the decision-making process in organizations. It provides a frameworkto gather information from internal and external sourcesto support decision making. There are many different

kinds of decision support systems, but in general, theyare used for problems that are less structured. So, while an MIS is used for routine decisions, a DSS is

often used when the circumstances are not well definedor unpredictable. In the case of a supermarket, anexample of a DSS would be a system for how to handle

an emergency, such as a flood. Quick decisions withoutcomplete information will be necessary, and this is notsomething all the employees will have to deal with on adaily basis.
