MANAGING COMMUNITY HEALTH AND SAFETY FOR OPERATIONS: FROM ASSESSMENT TO IMPLEMENTATION Workshop Facilitator: Dr. Janis Shandro leads Monkey Forest Consulting’s community health practice. She has a background in engineering/population health with extensive health assessment/largescale development project experience in Canada, Australia, Asia, Africa and Latin America. She specializes in mitigation measures, culturally appropriate health impact assessment, community health baseline methodology, and has indepth experience in developing and implementing community health monitoring programs and other related initiatives (such as influx management). She is currently leading the implementation of community health and safety and influx programs associated with the construction of a large petrochemical complex in Vietnam to IFC standards in addition to managing large scale community health projects associated with the extractive sector for a number of Canadian First Nation communities. However, implementing and managing community health risk and impact assessments, monitoring programs, management plans and investment initiatives can be a serious challenge for corporate directors, operations managers and staff due to gaps in knowledge and best practice. Monkey Forest Consulting Ltd. is a small, specialized firm. We work on complex projects in challenging settings and effectively help our clients (international finance institutions, companies and communities) manage risk. This one-day workshop aims to bring together industry managers, front-line staff, regulators, consultants and other interested parties to enhance knowledge and build professional capacity on the following topics: Assessing and identifying community health and safety risks Understanding the linkage between occupational and community health Developing and implementing community health and safety management plans Personal case examples of successful community health and safety mitigation measures, monitoring programs and strategic health investment programs
