Programme In Ahmedabad’s largest squatter settlement, this multi-purpose activity centre serves as a school, vocational training centre and health centre. As such, it is intensively used, providing a community hub, and its premises and activities are constantly expanding. But it has also created a model for construction using recycled waste. So, for example, door panels have been made from shredded packaging, walls from wooden crates and tiles from ceramic waste. These components were manufactured with hand-operated tools by local people, who earned wages and learned new skills in the process. The result addresses environmental concerns, economic issues and provides affordable housing.
