Chatham IslandsAbout 800 kilometres east of Christchurch, these islands are the ancestral home of the Moriori - Polynesian people with similar genealogy to the New Zealand Māori.

Southern LakesQueenstown and Wanaka’s world famous beauty changes with every season. In winter the mountains are alive with snowboarders and skiers; in spring and summer, adventures on offer range from golf and horse trekking to bungy jumping and jet boating. A scenic drive south takes you to Fiordland where glacier-cut valleys half-filled with deep green water, cascading waterfalls and dense forest is only a bush walk or relaxing cruise away. Further south, Central Otago is rich in history and famous for fine wine.
Māori legend tells us that the fiords of Fiordland were carved by the demi-god Tu Te Rakiwhanoa.
The wild Mackenzie Country is named after Jock Mackenzie, a Scottish sheep rustler whose exploits became part of New Zealand folklore.
The Oparara Basin has extraordinary limestone formations.
In ancient times, Māori rounded the huge bluffs of the west coast using flax ladders, to reach the treasured pounamu ( jade) rivers.
The Heaphy Track covers 78 kilometres of subtropical rainforest, tussock high country, river valley and coast.

Porpoise Bay on the Catlins Coast is home to a pod of the world’s smallest and rarest dolphins.
Canterbury & the West CoastCanterbury’s landscape is filled with green pastures and friendly country towns. The buzzing hub of the region, Christchurch, is a stylish modern city with a mix of interesting architecture and parks to relax in. Approximately five hours south west is the spectacular Aoraki Mount Cook and National Park, where you’ll find the tallest peak in New Zealand. Hanmer Springs is close by, boasting natural spa baths with stunning mountain views. Also not far is Kaikoura, famous for its crayfish and whale watching safaris. You can helicopter, skydive or hike over Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers or take in their beauty from a short walk to their bases. Punakaiki’s pancake rocks are a must see.
The mysterious, spherical Moeraki Boulders are around 60 million years old. They were created by a process similar to the formation of oyster pearls.
Sperm whales can nearly always be found off the coast of Kaikoura.

Coastal Otago & SouthlandLovers of history and nature will have plenty to see in the deep south. Oamaru, Dunedin and Invercargill have some of the best-preserved Victorian and Edwardian buildings in the Southern Hemisphere. There’s stonework to admire, museums to explore and peaceful public gardens to relax in. The coastline and Stewart Island have amazing natural attractions like the Moeraki boulders, little blue penguins and the royal albatrosses and fur seals. Stewart Island is just a ferry ride from Bluff and offers cage diving with great white sharks for those who like to take a walk on the wild side.
Originally a French settlement, the historic town of Akaroa is known for its wildlife cruises.
The Christchurch Botanic Gardens has the finest collection of exotic and indigenous plants in New Zealand.

Then it’s on to the geothermal and Māori cultural experiences of Rotorua where bubbling mud pools can be viewed on a relaxing wander around the city’s parks. Sit back and watch a geyser erupt, kapa haka performances and indulge at a day spa. Picturesque Lake Taupo, famous for its trout fishing and perfect water skiing conditions, was used for the filming of The Lord of The Rings. Tongariro National Park sits in the heart of the region, protecting three active volcanoes. In winter, the park is great for skiing and during other seasons there are legendary walks to experience.

Dutch explorer Abel Tasman is credited as the first European to ‘discover’ New Zealand, sighting the South Island on 13 December 1642. More than 126 years later, Lieutenant James Cook of the British Royal Navy sailed into Poverty Bay on the North Island’s east coast.
European migration began with English and Scottish missionaries and traders in the 1800s, later joined by settlers from Holland and other European countries. In the beautiful Bay of Islands in 1840, a Treaty was signed establishing British law in New Zealand, and guaranteeing Māori authority over their land and culture.
New Zealand’s multicultural society has become increasingly diverse and vibrant with influences from Pacific Island and Asian immigrants.
