Welcome from the ESOF 2016 Champion

On behalf of EuroScience Open Forum 2016 I am delighted to welcome Europe’s largest general science conference to Manchester in 2016.

Page 3: Manchester Central Partnership and exhibition opportunities brochure.pdf · funding and finance • innovation support networks • intellectual property • open innovation models

Manchester has always been a city at the forefront of discovery and advancement in technology, industry, engineering, science and innovation. ESOF 2016 will reflect this unique spirit. Our theme for the forum is ‘Science as Revolution’, focusing on fostering breakthroughs in science and the conditions needed for a city to capitalise on scientific knowledge.

We will be placing a much greater emphasis on the Science to Business Programme within ESOF in 2016 and will also be offering additional platforms within the European City of Science and Euroscience Festival activities. This cohesive approach will create additional profile and will enhance the longevity of your investment.

The programme for ESOF 2016 will be both inspiring and exciting, making Manchester a worthy successor to Copenhagen in 2014 and Dublin in 2012.

We look forward to welcoming you on board as an ESOF 2016 partner. Prof. Dame Nancy Rothwell President and Vice-Chancellor The University of Manchester

As Europe’s largest interdisciplinary science meeting, ESOF brings together over 4,500 leading thinkers, innovators, policy makers, journalists and educators from more than 90 countries to discuss current and future breakthroughs in contemporary science.

At what other conference could you come face to face with path-breaking scientists, young researchers, business leaders, entrepreneurs, innovators, policy makers, creators, comedians, poets and science communicators from across the globe? What brings them together is a shared interest in new discoveries and the direction that research is taking in the sciences, humanities and social sciences.

What makes ESOF unique is that it is both international and multidisciplinary, presenting the full spectrum of scientific breakthroughs across a wide range of disciplines. It is at the frontiers of scientific and technological research in Europe and beyond, bridging the gap between science and society, stimulating policies to support scientific research and fostering collaboration between science and industry, including Nobel laureates, influential policy makers, business leaders and prominent scientists.

Why Manchester? Looking beyond the boundaries of possibility is part of the DNA of a city that has helped to shape the modern world.

8

Page 9: Manchester Central Partnership and exhibition opportunities brochure.pdf · funding and finance • innovation support networks • intellectual property • open innovation models

Manchester is a city of radical thinking, inspirational science and world changing firsts — it is the city where Rutherford first split the atom and Rolls met Royce, it is the home of the first passenger railway station and programmable computer, and lays claim to the first test-tube baby and the isolation of Graphene. Manchester now holds claim to another first, in being awarded the European City of Science for 2016 — coinciding with the 250th anniversary of the birth of John Dalton, the city’s acclaimed chemist whose pioneering research helped to shape modern atomic theory.

For over two centuries, industry, business and science have been central to Manchester’s development. Today, science and technology are important sectors for the city: not only are they vital in supporting jobs and economic growth, but they also have the potential to tackle some of the numerous challenges facing modern society.

In the 21st century, Manchester is once again leading the way in developments in science and technology, investing in a future based on innovation and new discoveries.

Originally the site of Manchester’s Central railway station, the venue offers a unique combination of historic architecture and state-of-the-art facilities. The expanse of the 10,000m² Central Hall provides an impressive backdrop for large scale conferences and exhibitions, whilst an extensive array of foyer and supplementary spaces, including the purpose built 800-seat Exchange Auditorium, provide ideal secondary spaces for smaller meetings, seminars, networking sessions and masterclasses.

The 2,400 seat Bridgewater Hall, the venue for the ESOF opening ceremony sits immediately adjacent to Manchester Central, as do several of the city centre’s top flight hotels. All in all, everything you need for a successful conference, including world-class venues and services, top quality hotels and restaurants and links to the city’s extensive transport network, are conveniently co-located at Manchester Central.

Manchester Central facilities

• Located in the heart of the city centre

The five day programme is made up of a number of different tracks. In the Science Programme there will be hundreds of seminars, workshops and debates on the latest science and technology from a broad spectrum of leaders and influencers from the scientific community, including Nobel laureates, influential policy makers, business leaders and prominent scientists.

The Science to Business Programme complements the Science Programme through the more detailed exploration of the issues surrounding breakthroughs in science. This is a unique arena to share ideas and best practice on improving the commercial outcomes from research, with peers from across the globe.

The Careers Programme is an integral component of ESOF 2016 and will provide opportunities for researchers, academic and industry representatives, training and educational institutes, science journalists and policy makers to engage with one another to reflect and develop ideas relating to the issues affecting early career researchers, industrial researchers and researchers in all stages or transitions in their careers.

A major part of ESOF 2016 will be an extensive science research and technology exhibition called ‘Science Central’ which interlinks with the main conference programme, across the three core areas of science, business and careers.

Programme highlights include:

• Science to Business activities linking cutting edge research with industrial applications

• Careers events for those in the early stages of their profession

• Dedicated happenings for science communicators, journalists and bloggers

• Science Central — an exhibition showcasing the very best of European research, innovation and technology

• A science festival of activities and events to engage the whole community

• A full social programme for delegates, including a prestigious opening ceremony, President’s dinner, media reception, drinks reception and party

“‘Science as Revolution’ means many things to Manchester. First of all, it captures the excitement of science itself and how new ideas are always coming up to turn over established ways of thinking — and we certainly want to see that at ESOF 2016.

Secondly, science revolutionises the world we live in — we are constantly coming across new materials, new ways of understanding our own bodies and new approaches to the grand societal challenges relating to sustainability, energy, food and water resources. Science is driving revolutions all around us, every day.

And then, thirdly, it also brings a sense of place of where we are in Manchester. Manchester has often been called the ‘city of revolutions’; in politics, as the city where Marx and Engels wrote the Communist Manifesto, in economic history, as the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution and in science as the base for 25 Nobel Prizewinners. Today, Manchester is a living laboratory for new ways to co-deliver healthcare and social services.

We take very seriously the title ESOF brings as European City of Science and want to harness the revolutionary potential of science.” Professor Luke Georghiou

Vice-President for Research and InnovationThe University of Manchester

Our aim is to bring Manchester alive with science, with events for all ages and a public engagement programme of workshops, performances and experiences celebrating the latest developments in science, technology and engineering. The ambition is to engage thousands of participants as well as raising awareness nationally and internationally.

The ESOF festival will be part of a wider programme of activity under the banner of European City of Science. This city designation is a first for the UK and a recognition of Manchester’s contribution to scientific discovery and commercial innovation over the last 250 years. Over the year a dynamic and diverse programme of events will connect science with Manchester’s vibrant commercial, sporting and cultural scene — to business leaders and politicians, schools, families and community groups.

There will be much to say and to celebrate about science in all its forms and we are keen to take the Manchester message to a global audience, recognising a rich history of innovation but also a very modern city, a place of ambition and investment, where the scientific, cultural and creative sectors positively coexist and thrive.

If you are interested in sponsorship opportunities for either the ESOF 2016 science festival and the European City of Science activity, please contact the Partnership Team.

“ESOF will not only encourage investment in Manchester science, but provides us all with an opportunity to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers with the power of discovery and invention.” Sally MacDonald Director, Museum of Science and Industry

Manchester – European City of Science

To help engage the widest possible audience with the excitement and potential of cutting-edge science, Manchester will also be hosting a special science festival, wrapped around the events of ESOF 2016.
