A resume of mine is at zxlat.translatorscafe.com. I do many other language and communication-related things: Chinese, German, and Spanish to English Translation and Technical Translation (only INTO English); Technical Communication (Editing, Illustration); Cartooning; and Mandarin Tutoring and Accent Improvement.

I will not be available for in-person (on-site) interpreting. If such a need is anticipated and if I am informed in timely fashion, then I will try to find an independent interpreter in the market who is local to you, and qualified, who can appear in person. You would have to negotiate separately with that person.

Your first step is to send an email to me to request:

(1) A description of the procedure (2) The questionnaire (also can be

downloaded)

I am learning about Internet Telephony and how to use the Skype ® service. So even though I am based in Chicago, I can still offer this service nationwide.

If you need help with your initial contact with the person, then I will help if I can.

For example, suppose that the person does not speak any English at all and has no relative or friend who can act as a temporary go-between. Or suppose that you need to communicate with someone at an organization that only uses Chinese.

Indeed, I can write and type Chinese with software and I could send the person or organization a Chinese email message.

I prefer two-way telephone communications. However, teleconferencing is available.

NOTE: You will probably notice my speech impediment when we speak on the phone. This impediment is more apparent when I speak in English. Your patience with this, and your patience with my slow deliberate manner of speech, will be much appreciated.

Items 4, 5, and 6 are on the next slide. Items 7 and 8 are on Slide 6.

1 Only for Chicago and environs.

2 I will not be available for events and meetings etc.

If such a need is anticipated and if I am informed in timely fashion, then I will try to find an independent interpreter who is local and qualified who can appear in person.

3 The first step: Send an email to me to request the specific questionnaire.

NOTE: You will probably notice my speech impediment when we speak on the phone. This impediment is more apparent when I speak in English. Your patience with this, and your patience with my slow deliberate manner of speech, will be much appreciated.

4 Review the questionnaire, complete it, and then send it back to me.

Its purpose is to help us get on the same page as to what information is needed. If we have to, then we can go over the questionnaire on the phone.

Note: Filling out the questionnaire and returning it to me is always better and saves time in the long run.

5 Arrange the time and day of the phone call that I will have with the person, as described in the questionnaire.

6 If help is needed in this regard (i.e., the person does not speak any English at all and/or has no relative or friend who can act as a temporary go-between), then I will help if I can. For example, I can use Chinese language software to send the person a Chinese email.

7 Get the correct name and telephone number to me, per questionnaire. The person should wait for my call on the day and time that was arranged.

8 Three-way or conference calling services might be available too.

However, I prefer this two-way calling arrangement, in which I communicate with the person and then report what he or she said, according to the questionnaire.

Items 1, 2, and 3 are on Slide 4. Items 4, 5, and 6 are on Slide 5.

The Basics C

NOTE: As a professional translator and interpreter, I will hold content of all communications of translation and interpretation work in strict confidentiality, and I will not enter into any untoward business arrangements.

CASE OF WRONGFUL DEATH

A downtown attorney contacts me because of the need to communicate with a Mandarin-speaking person who will become, possibly, a witness for the plaintiff. The attorney team is still learning things about the case and needs to get the story as this person, Mr. Li, experienced it.

Mr. Li no longer works for the company that is getting sued; he now operates machines at a factory that belongs to a different company. He speaks some English but he cannot express himself well enough to clearly describe his experience at the former company.

I get this story from Mr. Li: The company did not maintain the machines well and because of this, Mr. George’s machine blew up and killed him.

Mr. Li thinks that it is not surprising that the surviving family members want to sue, because Mr. George was a very good machine operator and was very safety-conscious.

In fact, Mr. George’s death was the main reason for Mr. Li’s move to the new company. Mr. Li knew that due to that company’s negligence some bad thing might happen some day, and he will indeed testify for the family.

A local business school has been hosting two researchers from China.

The school is organizing a conference on business optimization and computers. The department that is using the two researchers wants to hire outside language help for an expert from the researchers’ school in China. This expert will be coming to Chicago to present some workshops at the conference.

This expert’s English is an unknown quantity. The researchers will be able to communicate with her in Mandarin, certainly, but the school and the department want to make sure that all bases are covered. Her expertise is highly valued.

She arrives at the department on a Friday morning. I make a phone call to her that afternoon. I find out that she knows Russian very well, but she barely knows enough English to present the workshops the next week (she will not be able to answer any questions). I offer to help as much as I can. Her workshop materials already had been translated into English in China.
