As a child and teen, I spent many Sundays reciting these words and others from Soto Zen Buddhist teachings like the Eightfold Path and the Four Noble Truths, or singing verses from the Gatha song book. Some of the words and passages were repeated so often I could recite them from memory. Now, many decades later, I find that these words and lines are taken more to heart. As one of my mother’s primary caregivers, I am often faced with the challenges of the 24/7 demands of caregiving. It is in those moments of fatigue, frustration, or even anger, that I find myself calling upon those memorized teachings, and drawing upon the wisdom and lessons within them. Being mindful of mom’s struggles, knowing how my actions and care affect her, and taking time to breathe and calm myself have all been some of the practical applications of my lifelong practice of Soto Zen Buddhism. Of course, I also depend upon the help and support of family members, caregiver aides, and even my precious friends within the Mantokuji Sangha. Fortunately for you, the same guidance and support, fellowship and aloha are available to all of you right here at Mantokuji. I hope you have the opportunity to come to Mantokuji and be a part of what has meant and continues to mean so much to me and my family. Take care.
