Pathological  trials  of  Rice  is  running  at  A.R.I.,  Patna    

Pathological  trials  of  rice  are  scheduled  to  be  conducted  at  the  A.R.I.,  Patna,  during   the   rice  crop  season  2014  by  Dr.  Arvind   Kumar,   Senior   Scientist,   Plant   Pathology.  Transplanting  of  seedlings  of  two  pathological  trials,  based  on  host  plant   resistance  studies  have  been  conducted  on  July  15.  Early  sown  seedlings  were  reported  to  be  suffered  from  seedling  blast  disease  caused  by  Magnaporthe  grisea  (Hebbert)   Barr   (Anamorph:   Pyricularia   grisea   (Cooke)  Sacc.)   at   the  farmer’s   fields,   at  few  locations.    Two  diseased   seedling  

samples,  collected  from  Bhojpur  district  and  Jehanabad  district  were  sent   to   ARI,   Plant   Pathology   disease   diagnostic   laboratory   by   the  Joint  Director,  Plant  Protection,  Bihar  and  K.V.K.,  Jehanabad  on  30th  June  and  01st  July,  2014  respectively.  Samples  were  examined  at  the  laboratory   level   and   suitable   control   measures   were   suggested   to  the  concerned  units  for  spread  among  the  farmers.  

Supply  and  sale  of  planting  material  of  fruit  crops  are  on  the  rise  at  the  University    

Department   of   Horticulture   (Fruit   &   Fruit   Technology),   B.A.U,  Sabour   is   involved   in  multiplication  of  quality  planting  material  of   fruit   crops   particularly,  mango,   guava,   litchi,   aonla,   beil   etc.  University  is  set  to  supply  around  5,00,000  mango  grafts,  50000  guava   saplings,   100000   aonla   plants   to   the   Department   of  Environment  and  Forestry,  Govt.  of  Bihar  under  “Green  Mission”  programme  during  this  year.  In  addition,  5,00,000  mango  grafts,  50000  guava,  50000  aonla  saplings,  2000   litchi   layers   and   7.00   lakh  tissue   cultured   banana   saplings   is  to  be  availed   to   the  Govt.  of  Bihar  under   NHM/   CMHM   scheme.  Major   shares   of   planting   material  

have   been   perpetuated   at   Horticulture   Garden,   B.A.C,   Sabour.   Four   other  units  of  B.A.U,  Sabour;  K.V.K,  Sabour,  K.V.K.  Jalagarh,  K.V.K.  Banka  and  BPSAC,  Purnea   are   also   involved   in   the   generation   and   supply   of   planting  material.  The   planting   materials   are   also   being   sold   among   the   farmers   as   per   their  necessity  and  circumstances.

Need  to  study  sporocarp  viability,  nutritional  management  and  nitrogen  release  pattern  of  Azolla:  Dr.  A.  K.  Jha  

 Dr   A.   K.   Jha,   Assistant   Professor,   Department   of   Soil   Science   and  Agricultural  Chemistry,  presented   the  background   to   initiate   studies  on  sporocarp  viability,  nutritional  management  and  nitrogen  release  pattern  for  Azolla.  The  need  to  develop  sporocarp  storage  technology  for  sexual  multiplication  of  Azolla  was  raised.  It  can  obviate  the  need  for  the  bulk  introduction  of  Azolla  biomass  for  Azolla  based  BNF.  He  also  emphasized  over   the  need  of   studying   the  effect   of   nutritional  management   on   spore   bearing   biomass   production   and   sexual  propagation   of   Azolla.   These   studies   can   offer   avenues   to   increase  

the   applicability   of   Azolla   by   saving   chemical   fertilizers   and   improving   soil   and   environmental   health   of  Bihar.  

BAU  scientists  attended  Seminar  on  “Export  Promotion  of  Agricultural  Products”  The   team   of   BAU   scientists;   Dr.   Ramashrit   Singh,   Dr.   Feza   Ahmad   and   Dr.   Shashank   Shekhar   Solankey  attended   a   seminar   on   “Export   Promotion   of   Agricultural   Products   from   the   State   of   Bihar”   organized   by  Bihar  State  Horticulture  Mission   in  collaboration  with   the  Agriculture  and  Processed  Food  Products  Export  Development  Authority  (APEDA)  on  15th  July  at  Patna,  in  the  august  presence  of  Mr.  Narendra  Singh,  Hon’ble  Agriculture  Minister,   Bihar.   The  major   issues   discussed   during   the   seminar   were   the   present   scenario   of  vegetable,   fruits   and   honey   production   of   the   state,   management   and   mitigation   of   post-­‐harvest   losses,  value  addition  and  export  potential.  

Educational  Tour  of  Students  of  Bihar  Agriculture,  Sabour    The   sixth   semester   students   of   BAC,   Sabour   had   gone   under   All   India   Study   Tour   as   a   part   of   learning  programme  for  15  days  during  2nd  to  16th  July  under  the  tour   guidance   of   Dr.   Sanjeev   Kumar   Gupta,   Assistant  Professor-­‐cum-­‐Jr.   Scientist,   Agronomy   and   Dr.   Sareeta  Nahakpam,   Physiology,   Bihar   Agriculture,   Sabour.   The  students   visited   various   places   of   India   such   as   IIHR,  Science   Centre,   Banglore;   Palace   of   Tipu   Sultan,  Mysore;   Tea   Factory   and   Museum,   Ooty;   Tamilnadu  Agricultural   University,   Coimbatore;   Sea   Cost,  Kanyakumari;   Fort   and   Taj   Mahal,   Agra;   Punjab  Agricultural   University,   Golden   Temple,   Bagha   Border;  Punjab,  Central  Potato  Research  institute;    Shimla,  IARI,  Pusa,  Red  Fort,  Rajghat;  New  Delhi.  Mr.  Randhir  Kumar  was  nominated  as  class  representative  (CR)  for  this  tour  programme.

Weather-­‐related  Crop  Services  by  KVK,  Rohtas,  Bikramganj    

KVK-­‐Scientists  are  visiting  farmers’  fields  to  provide  farm-­‐advisory   services   among   the   farmer,   keeping   in   view   the  delayed   monsoon   and   late   transplanting   of   paddy   in  Rohtas  district.    Awareness  campaign  are  being  organized  at   different   villages   and   advices   related   to   medium   and  short  duration  paddy  varieties  -­‐  R.  Bhagwati,  R.  Sweta,  R.  Suhasini,   Prabhat   are   being   given   instead   of   MTU-­‐7029  and   R.M-­‐1,   BPT-­‐5204   etc   which   was   being   used   under  normal   condition.   This   campaign   has   been   started   from  15th  July  and  will  continue  till  September  2014  as  per  the  guidelines  of  ICAR,  New  Delhi  given  to  KVK's  of  the  state.  Accordingly,   farmers  of  16-­‐  villages  have  been  advised  to  go   for   transplanting   using   tube-­‐well   water   where   ever  feasible.   As   of   now,   maximum   5-­‐10%   of   transplantation  

has   been   done   in   the   district   as   compared   to   95%   of   the   previous   years.   Therefore,   KVK,   Scientists   are  advising  the  farmer  to  go  for  Direct  Seeded  Rice  -­‐  sowing  and  raising  of  community  nurseries  along  with  crop  diversification  in  this  case.    

Training  programme  on  “Integrated  Pest  Management”  at  KVK,  Sabour  Krishi   Vigyan   Kendra,   Sabour   has  organized   two   day   training   programme  entitled   “Integrated   Pest   Management”  sponsored  by  ATMA,  Bhagalpur  during  18-­‐19th   July   in   the   presence   of   Dr.   U.   S.  Jaiswal,   Assoc.   Director   Extension  Education,   BAU,   Sabour.   28   Agriculture  Coordinators   and   extension   personnel   of  plant   protection   from   Bhagalpur,  Lakhisarai,   Sheikhpura   and   Jamui  participated   this   programme.   Dr.   Vinod  Kumar,   Programme   Coordinator,   KVK,  Sabour   stressed   over   the   importance,  requirement  and  needd  of  Integrated  Pest  Management   during   his   deliberation.   He  also   suggested   the   trainees   to   form   self  groups  of  20-­‐30  farmers  and  get  trained  with  various  agricultural  techniques  by  KVK,  Sabour.  Dr.  S.  N.  Rai,  Sr.  Scientist  (Entomology.),  BAU,  Sabour,  Mr.  Ravindra  Mahto,  (JPPO),  Bhagalpur,  Mr.  Gopal  Saran,  (JPPO),  Munger,  Smt.  Punam  Kumari,  Deputy  PD-­‐ATMA,  Bhagalpur,  Mr.  Prabhat  Kumar  Singh,  Deputy  PD-­‐ATMA,  Bhagalpur,   Dr.   Sanjeev   Kumar,   SMS   (Plant   Pathology)   and  Dr.   A.   K.  Mouriya,   SMS   (Agronomy)   delivered  lectures  of  their  interest  and  specialization.

KVKs  marked  86th  ICAR  Foundation  day    

86th  Foundation  day  of  the  ICAR  was  marked  by  the  different  KVKs  in  one  or  another  way.  The  reports  of  the  events  hosted  by  the  few  KVKs  are  here      KVK,  Supaul:  KVK,  Supaul  marked  this  day  by  Organizing  Kisan  Goshthi   at   Village   Sadanandpur   under   NICRA   project.   This  Gosthi  was  pointed  on  the  effect  of  Climatic  variation  on  crop  and   contingent   crop   plan   adopted   by   the   farmers.   Hundred  farmers  of  NICRA  village  who  played  role  in  mitigating  climatic  variability  were  felicitated  with  Smart  Farmer  Award.      

KVK,   Aurangabad:   KVK,   Aurangabad   organized   training-­‐cum-­‐awareness  programme  at  the  adopted  village  Harigaon,  under  NICRA  project.  Programme  coordinator,  Krishi  Vigyan  Kendra,  Aurangabad   pointed   out   the   factors   behind   the   global  warming  and  its  impact  on  crop  production.  He  also  explained  the  importance  of  tree  planting  and  urged  the  farmers  to  plant  at   least   5   trees   transplant   on   their   children’s   birthday.   Er.  Raviranjan   emphasized   over   direct   seeding   of   rice   through  machine   and   uses   of   micro   irrigation   in   the   agriculture.   Mr.  Rajiv   Kumar   Vidhayarthi,   PAX   Chairman   appreciated   the  ongoing  NICRA  project  and  kept  words  of  planting  5000  trees  at   newly   constructed   canal.   100   farmers   were   felicitated   by  awarding  Smart  Farmer  Certificate.      KVK,   Jehanabad   :   KVK,   Jehanabad   marked   this   day   by  conducting  campus  training  on  "Poultry  Farming”.  Mr.  Aditya  Kumar  Das,  District  Magistrate  was  also  present  as  guest  and  encouraged   the   100   farmers   of   the   village   Sakrorha   under  NICRA   Project   by   awarding   "Smart   Farmers”   for   his  contribution  in  adopting  improved  practices  &  technologies  in  the   field   of  Natural   Resource  Management,   Crop   production  and   Animal   Husbandry   with   perspective   to   climate   changes.  District   Magistrate,   Jehanabad   announced   to   implement  various   government   schemes   for   this   village   such   as   Ahar-­‐pyne-­‐pokher,   plantation,   tube-­‐well   repair,   irrigation   etc.   and  appealed   the   farmers   to   take   benefit   in   convergence  mode.  Other  line  department  officials;  District  Agriculture  Officer,  Circle  Officer,  Programme  Officer,  MNREGA  etc.  were  also  present  during  the  event.  Mr.  Das  appreciated  the  progress  of  the  KVKs  in  the  Leadership  of  the  Programme  Co-­‐ordinator,  Dr.  Shobha  Rani.

 Kisan  Chaupal    ay  Kochaili  Village,  Purnea  

Kisan  Chaupal  was  organised  at  Kochaili  Village  of  Purnea  districts  by  KVK,  Purnea.  Manoj  Kumar,  Jr.  Scientist,  RRSS.  Jalalgadh  delivered  notes  on  the  improved  cultivation  of  Groundnut  while  Dr.  A.K.  Chandrawal  discussed  the  importance  of  soil   testing  technique   in  the  production  and  productivity  of  the  crops.        

 

University  mourns  the  sudden  demise  of  Shree  Niranjan  Verma      Shree   Niranjan,   Verma,   Separ,   Department   of   Entomology   deputed   at   Farm,   BAC,  Sabour  left  for  heavenly  abode  on  17th  at  1.30  P.M  July  after  road  accident  near  the  University  Campus  while  going  to  the  Bank.  He  was  about  fifty  years  old  and  has  left  one  adopted  child  behind  him.  The  University  mourns  the  sudden  death  of  Lt.  Verma  and  prays  for  the  peace  of  his  departed  soul.        

Weather  forecast  for  Bihar  during  20-­‐26  July,  2014:  Sunil  Kumar  Zone   I:  Light  to  moderate  rain  may  fall  during  20th  -­‐  22nd  July.  Days  may  remain  partly  cloudy.  Maximum  and  minimum  temperature  may  be  recorded  in  the  range  of  30-­‐310C  and  23-­‐240C  respectively.              Zone   II:  Rain  may   fall  on  20th,  21st,  23rd  and  26th   July   in   this   region.  Days  may  be  cloudy.  Maximum  and  minimum  temperature  may  be  in  recorded  the  range  of  32-­‐330C  and  25-­‐270C  respectively.        Zone  III  A:  Maximum  and  minimum  temperature  was  near  the  normal  during  the  last  week.  Rain  may  fall  on  20th,  21st  and  23rd  July.  Maximum  and  minimum  temperature  may  be  recorded  in  the  range  of  31-­‐330C  and  25-­‐260  C  respectively.        Zone  III  B:  Last  week,  maximum  and  minimum  temperature  was  above  the  normal.  Rain  may  fall  on  20th,  21st,  23rd  and  26th  July.  Maximum  and  minimum  temperature  may  be  noticed  in  the  range  of  33-­‐340C  and  26-­‐270C  respectively.
