“Progressive Women Remaining Relevant in a Global Society”
My Fellow NAUW Sisters,
I am delighted to serve as your Co-Chair for the 71st National
Convention which will be held at the Manhattan Beach Marriott
Hotel in the beautiful city of Manhattan Beach, California, a
suburban city outside of Los Angeles. We welcome you to the
Golden State of California! Convention year is always an exciting
time for NAUW as we continue to grow and adapt. We strive to
remain relevant in this rapidly growing age of social media. We have
seen injustices across the nation, and note the continuing systematic racism. We gather together
to become motivated and responsive during these times, and want to take back to our branches a
renewed sense of hope, encouragement and the belief that we can work together as civic-minded
women for better understanding, social justice and righteousness among men. We will have
dynamic workshops, inspiring speakers, talented youth and plenty of vendors to shop till you
drop. Our National President Evelyn Wright will guide us through the business at hand as she
continues to carry the vision of four visionary women who saw a need to unite to address racism
in 1910. In this 21st century, we are still addressing these same issues. As progressive women, we
can make a difference. We can connect with fellow sisters, learn from our Forever Emeralds and
collaborate with our millennial sisters by welcoming them into our illustrious organization. Take
advantage of the early bird registration. Sign up for workshops and committees, and become a
part of the solution to ignite change in this global society.
Come early and take a fabulous escorted pre-tour to see Los Angeles. The City of Los Angeles
holds many distinctions. L.A. is the entertainment capital of the world, a cultural mecca boasting
more than 100 museums, and a paradise of idyllic weather. Some of the world’s best-known and
most iconic landmarks and attractions call Los Angeles home: the Hollywood Sign; Griffith Park
Observatory; the Walt Disney Concert Hall at the Music Center in Downtown L.A.; the
Hollywood Walk of Fame; the Space Shuttle Endeavour at the California Science Center; and
Universal Studios Hollywood, just to name a few. Southern California is famous for its near-
perfect weather and Los Angeles has plenty of outdoor activities to allow visitors to enjoy the
sunshine. Plus, Los Angeles is one of few cities in the world where it’s possible to ski in the
morning and surf in the afternoon. Los Angeles has inspired “California-cool” fashion trends all
over the world. From the high fashion shops on Rodeo Drive to the chic boutiques of the beach
cities, Los Angeles offers shopping for every style. If you plan to stay longer, plan a tour of your
own. There is so much to see and do. You
will not be disappointed.
On behalf of our National President Evelyn
Wright, Southwest Sectional Director Dr.
Essie French-Preston, and myself, Kenya
Dennis of Culver City, we would like to
say, “WELCOME ABOARD!”
“Progressive Women Remaining Relevant in a Global Society”
Greetings from the 71st National Convention
Co-Chair, Valerie Vaultz, 1st Vice President
of the West Coast Cities Branch of the
Southwest Section. My dynamic NAUW
Sisters, what an honor and a privilege it will
be to welcome you to Manhattan Beach,
California. Manhattan Beach is a city within
the southwestern Los Angeles County, on the
Pacific Coast, South of El Segundo, and North
of Hermosa Beach. Manhattan Beach is one
of the three Beach Cities that make up the
South Bay.
We are working passionately to make certain that we leave no stone unturned in
order for you to have a convention like no other. We want to provide you with
the business of NAUW but not only do we want to work hard, we especially want
to play hard. It is my prayer that this convention will offer you a wealth of
wisdom, many monumental moments, and overflowing opportunities to share
our sisterhood! We look forward to seeing you there

How to Successfully Manage Your Branch Finances
Our financial officers will review the duties of the Treasurer and Financial Secretary •Timeline for
Submission of Dues and Required Documentation (i.e. download of forms from National Website)
•Required forms to submit to National for Reimbursement •Use of Electronic Tools to Generate
Monthly/Yearly Financial Reports (i.e., Microsoft Excel) •Answer Questions Related to Tax
Exempt Documentation Needed to be Submitted to Vendors. Laptops would be helpful in this
workshop.
Parliamentary Procedure
The knowledge of parliamentary rules is helpful to participants on every level: members need to
be aware of methods of correct procedure, and leaders need to be knowledgeable in the use of
proper techniques. Correct parliamentary procedure ensures justice to everyone, prescribes
order, reflects kindness and generosity, provides constructive use of limited time, and gives one a
sense of self-confidence. This workshop is designed to help experienced and inexperienced
leaders and members conduct meetings of high quality and efficiency and to give guidance in
organizational structure and functions.
NAUW Protocol
The officially established practices of the National Association of University Women will be
presented in this workshop by the Forever Emeralds. The Protocol Guide sets forth the practices
and social interactions of the NAUW and provides a historical memory and continuity that holds
us together with the spirit of trust and respect for each other. Be sure that you understand how
things should really be done. Get all of your protocol questions answered!
Technology is a Must
The importance of technology in our daily lives is undeniable. This is due to the fact that in today’s
dynamic world, technology is a must. As technology continues to advance and direct even more
easiness in our lives, there is a need to stress how advantageous it is to our lives. Find out the
latest technological advances and how they will impact you.
How to Avoid Fraud, Scams, and Identity Theft
People 50 and older control more than 70 percent of the nation's wealth today, and the scammers
know it. They’re using the telephone, U.S. mail, email, and the Internet and may even appear on
your doorstep trying to get your money. New technology has made it easier for criminals to gain
access to our personal information and savings, and for some of us, issues related to aging, such
“Progressive Women Remaining Relevant in a Global Society”
as memory loss, can increase vulnerability. Understanding the latest trends and tactics in fraud
can help us all to protect our own savings and help others who are more vulnerable.
Living a Healthy Lifestyle
This workshop is designed to help people learn techniques and strategies for the day-to-day
management of ongoing health conditions. The focus is on issues common to people with a
variety of health conditions. Participants develop through action-planning and feedback, behavior
modeling, problem-solving techniques, and decision-making.
Blueprint for Financial Success
This workshop provides a general overview on building a strong financial foundation.
One-third of Millennials are concerned about finding a stable job and paying off loans. Fifty-two
percent (52%) of Gen Xers and 53% of Baby Boomers say saving for retirement is a major
concern. Only one-in-five of those surveyed feel financially prepared for an emergency. About
one-in-four respondents consider themselves financially savvy. Does this sound familiar? Join us
and get some of your financial questions answered!
Dance Your Way to Fitness
Line Dancing involves a lot of footwork and legwork and is a great cardiovascular and
cardiorespiratory workout. There are many fitness benefits that include an increased alertness,
increased rhythmic abilities, improved mental acuity and concentration, plus better posture,
balance and coordination. Come and dance your way to fitness!
Black Lives Matter For many, Black Lives Matter is unfamiliar. To truly praise or criticize the movement, it is imperative that individuals gain an understanding of the history of the African-American experience in this country as it relates to law and justice--two of the country’s most cherished tenets. Could it be that the doctrine of equality has and continues to neglect African-Americans in the United States? Could it be an unjustified outcome of justified force? The Black Lives Matter seminar creates a safe space for students and faculty to explore the movement, debate the merits of the movement, and ultimately arrive at a conclusion that is in line with their own moral compasses. Be a part of an eye-opening and highly valuable learning experience. Fingerprinting 101 The science of fingerprint identification has served worldwide governments for over a century to provide accurate identification of criminals. Fingerprints offer a reliable means of personal identification, which essentially is the reason fingerprints have replaced other methods of establishing the identities of persons reluctant to admit previous arrests. No two fingerprints have ever been found alike in many billions of human and automated computer comparisons. Therefore, fingerprints form the basis for criminal history foundation at every police agency on earth. Come and learn about this fascinating and vital process. Sex-trafficking This workshop provides the necessary information to keep children safe on the Internet and
informs adults about how best to protect young people from negative and criminal influences on
line. Topics include social networking, cyber bullying, sexting, and Internet predators. This
workshop provides prevention and intervention strategies and Internet safety resources
