Some tips: Speaking with young people about Coronavirus Our counsellor Noelene Cox has researched some websites and topics that may be useful: Young people have heard about Covid-19, and even if they dont really understand the virus they will have seen the changes around them that have occurred and continue to occur. So please do not be afraid to speak with them about it, it is important that they hear calm clear information from the people that care about them. Here are some points to remember when speaking with young people: Stay calm, select a time where you, and family are calm and relaxed. Thank you to all who have completed the Access to Technology Survey. Your voice is critical in our planning as we are incredibly aware of the impact that remote learning has on your family and home life. We are aiming to make our learning from home lessons and plans as streamlined and easy as possible whilst still trying to maintain quality learning experiences. Our staff have been working through a four-phase plan that aims to develop effective and meaningful connections between staff and students. We are currently in Phase One.

Please consult with the ‘How to Access Google Classroom’ guide attached to today’s newsletter. If you have read through this and require extra support, please call the office.

Some tips: Speaking with young people about Coronavirus Our counsellor Noelene Cox has researched some websites and topics that may be useful: Young people have heard about Covid-19, and even if they don’t really understand the virus they will have seen the changes around them that have occurred and continue to occur. Make sure that the way that the information is given and what is given is age appropriate (a preschooler may need a different approach than a ten year old or a teenager);

Stick to facts and be realistic. If you don’t know the answer that’s ok come back to it later;

Take care with what social media or news that young people are accessing. Try to watch news that provides rational, realistic and clear information rather than information that is anxiety provoking.

Deputy Principal’s Message

Congratulations to Saskia Hansen and Stella Lewis the gaining4 Expectation Cards to receive an Expectation Certificate.

Special congratulations to Saskia Hansen for gaining a Bronze Banner.

Learning from Home/Attendance If your child is currently physically absent from school and you have not already contacted the school to indicate a reason for absence, please contact the school by email with Learning from Home in the subject matter and your child’s name in the body of the email. While we understand that most students who are currently absent from school are doing so in response to the Premier’s message and communication from the school, it is a requirement that we mark the roll accurately.

Learning from Home – Completion of Weekly Frameworks for Teaching We do not expect all children to complete the weekly Frameworks for Teaching. Literacy and Numeracy tasks are the priority. Learning Support for Students Learning at Home This week we emailed Support Frameworks for Teaching to parents of students whose teachers identified that their child could benefit from a modified program. Next week, additional students will receive this Support Framework. Designated Learning Support Teachers for each grade will contact parents of students receiving Support Frameworks for Teaching. Deputy Principal’s Message PBEL— Mindfulness/Smiling Mind-Thrive Inside Smiling Mind has developed additional resources to support families through this time. Thrive Inside is a special initiative to help you stay calm and healthy in the physical constraints of your home, while remaining calm and healthy inside your mind. Managing our emotions and supporting each other can be challenging at the best of times. This is why, more than ever, we all need to be doing our best to regularly pause, take a breath and be proactive in looking after ourselves and others. It provides information and practical ideas to help us all stay well. https://www.smilingmind.com.au/thrive-inside Miss Catherine Wyles

Library News Heaps of praise for the following terrific students who completed the 2020 Premier’s Reading Challenge: Zara Smith (4M), Juliet Yardley (4S), Benjamin Coghlan (4S), Trinity Perret (3R), Hallie Brain (2L) and Lucy Hough (3R)! Students can use their DET logons to record the books they have read at www.premiersreadingchallenge.nsw.edu.au . Instead of printing your reading record, you can email it as an attachment ([email protected]) to be acknowledged in the fortnightly newsletter. Once we are back at school, children can collect all their other prizes and receive a certificate at the end of the year. Remember the following as a general rule:

K-2: 30 PRC books, either being read to or read independently Primary: 20 PRC titles read independently Keep calm, read and complete the 2020 Premier’s Reading Challenge! The second delivery of Scholastic Book Club orders has arrived, and the books are available to be picked up in the Teacher Resource area of the library.

Are you using some of the Super Six comprehension strategies at home? Here at school, Year 5 practised PREDICTING with a picture book with some excellent results. Remember all students can make predictions before, during and after reading. They can use the words, illustrations and their own background knowledge and experiences to make an informed prediction. This is just one strategy that can show understanding of the text. Have a go when you read next!

Happy reading and predicting! Mrs Ellen Swick Teacher Librarian
