The following members have Gold Badges:

Ron Tompkin Stuart Rawlinson Kingsley Waterhouse Bernie Dierks David Vicary Ken Langdale Victor Singleton Hugh West Rob Goldfinch Peter Repton Rob Uppill James Turner Roland Prince Arnold Godfrey Allan Waugh Mel Taylor Ross Bedford Stephen Finch

For electrical issues please speak to David Winslade.

If you have not been trained and assessed for a machine or you have any questions about using machines in the shed please speak to one of these members for assistance.

Leeming High School Presentation

On Monday 17th December Allan Waugh, Ron Tompkin, Kingsley Waterhouse and Eric Goddard attended an afternoon tea presentation at the Leeming High School Education Support Centre. Simon Turner and Leigh Caddy were also there.

Presentations were made to express appreciation for the support given by the various organisation involved in the school’s programme to provide education support students with work and practical experience.

Allan Waugh received a Certificate of Appreciation from Sarah Lomax, Workplace Learning Coordinator, accompanied by Evelyn Riley, Deputy Principal of the Education Support Centre

Whilst at the school we took the opportunity to look at the Chicken Coop we had made for the school. Since we last saw it there has been an expansion of the enclosed area around the coop and it has been named as Cluckingham Palace!

The compost heap for the nearby gardens is inside the chicken run and is very popular with the hens.

More SOS Breadboards

In December Roy and Dan took a rest from painting and were seen giving a finishing sand to the breadboards.

Reticulation for the Shed Garden

Dave Vicary with assistance from Allan Waugh, Kingsley Waterhouse and a number of other shed members, has been installing new reticulation piping in the garden area.

The pipes and associated control valves were recently laid in trenches and on the top of the timber sleepers forming the garden beds. Sprinklers have been fitted around the garden beds and adjusted to ensure coverage of the beds and of the nearby plants and trees.

Reticulation pipes laid out ready for installation.

A manual shut off valve has been installed in the incoming supply pipe just inside the fence near the orange tree. This will allow work to be carried out on the pipes in the garden without the need to shut off the supply from the Senior Citizens Centre. Another manual shutoff valve has been installed in the outgoing pipe after the tap standpipe. This will allow the reticulation to be switched off without affecting the supply to the tap. The supply to the garden has 7 zones each with its own remotely controlled valve. A 9-zone programmable control centre has been installed, in the steel box near the container, to provide automatic control of the reticulation.

Water supply arrangement near the orange tree.

The reticulation shut off is immediately downstream of the tap support post. The supply shutoff valve is inside the blue vertical valve pit on the left. The remotely controlled valve for the first zone is at the tee off point on the centre right

Testing of the system is currently underway.

Toy Story

We highlighted some of Bernie Dierks toy projects in previous editions. Bernie recently completed the sit-on train set he was working on. The top of the engine cabin is the seat and the train chimney stack is the steering wheel.

Bernie has also completed another wooden doll’s prams. Note the photo of Bernie’s next project – a Morris “woody” Estate Car.

Table Story

In the last edition of the newsletter we highlighted a number of tables built by Shed members. The fascination with tables continues.

Keith Hayes, aways a busy man whether in the shed or out, brought in a small table which he has been sanding down in readiness for giving it a new coat of varnish.

David’s Knife

David Vicary, in between his work on the shed garden and other projects, recently attended a week long specialist knife making course in Bridgetown, during which he made a beautiful Damascus Knife.

The knife is made from so called Damascus Steel. This refers to a process used to make the blade that has its origins from a process used from the 3rd to 17th centuries in Damascus. The modern process results in a blade which shows a distinctive patterning that is similar to that produced in the historical process.

It involves hammer-welding strips of steel and iron followed by repeated heating, folding of the steel, and forging into the blade shape.

Petals and Pistils

When we purchased the set of Arbortech tools John Firth was the first to try them out and since then has not looked back. He recently showed us a solid jarrah carving of flowers he had worked on. The carving was made from a solid rectangular shaped piece of 50mm thick jarrah.

John Firth shows off the jarrah wood carving

John used a jigsaw to cut the rectangular workpiece into an oval shape before using the Arbortech Mini-grinder to start reducing the thickness of the workpiece at its outer edges. This left a central raised piece.

The concave petals of the flowers in the raised central piece were also formed using the Mini-grinder. John then used small wood chisels to undercut the jarrah to form the stems for the flowers. The Arbortech Contour Sander was used to finish the flower petals and the background surface.

The Pistils on the flowers were formed using a short section plastic pipe secured to the timber using silicone and filled with a mixture wood shavings and glue.

The background surface was waxed and the flower petals were given three coats of clear gloss varnish.

Unclean Machines

At the end of a number of recent sessions have we have found machines that have not been cleaned up after use.

Members are reminded that when they use a machine, they are responsible for ensuring that the machine must be cleaned up after use. If nobody is waiting to use the machine the member must clean the machine immediately after use. If someone is waiting and wants to use the machine immediately then that person must accept responsibility for cleaning the machine after they have used it.

Page 7: Manning Men’s Shed Newsletter · 1 Manning Men’s Shed Newsletter An activity of the Manning Senior Citizens Centre January 2019#01 Editor’s Note: The purpose of this Newsletter

7

Members using a machine must ensure that they have sufficient time to clean a machine before they leave the shed or must agree with someone who will take over the responsibility for cleaning the machine.

It is important on some machines, such as the drum sander, that the build-up of sawdust is avoided as it will affect the quality of the finish achieved.

Here are some examples of unclean machines:

At the back of the Drum Sander

On the top of the Table Saw

Around the small Disc/Belt Sander

Around the large Disc Sander

These photos were all taken at the same time after everyone other than the Shed Coordinator and the Shed Leader had left the shed. There was also Sawdust on floor near the Table Saw.

Please ensure that you follow the rules for cleaning and do not just walk away and leave it for “someone else” to do.

Thank you.

This request is fully endorsed by the Shed Coordinator

Reorganizing The Shed

Members will notice that, all the shelving and benches have been removed from the western end of the woodwork shop. This has been done to make way for a new compactus unit that is scheduled for installation on Saturday 19th January 2019. These changes were approved by the Shed Committee at the end of last year.

The compactus units will allow storage of various items including the hand-held power tools, hand-held battery-operated power tools, and general hand tools.

The Sign-in Computer and donation jar have been temporarily relocated to the left side of the door into the Shed Coordinator’s office.

Our Electrician, Dave Winslade, has removed the power points and made safe the wiring as they will be hidden behind the compactus unit. John Paisley has filled in the associated holes in the plasterboard.

Crib Room Door Closer

A door closer has been fitted to the Crib Room door. This will ensure that the door closes itself after someone has entered or left the crib room. It will help reduce noise and dust levels in the Crib Room and also reduce the load on the air conditioner

Note that the door will stay open if it is fully opened. Please ensure that you partially close the door so that after you have entered or left the crib room it closes itself.

Donation of Machines and Tools

For a while now there have been a number of older machines and tools in the shed that were surplus to our requirements. They were all advertised to members some time ago and have been taking up valuable space in the shed.

We recently heard of the plight of the Marmun Mia Mia Indigenous Corporation, at Settlers Common in Bedfordale. They had most of their equipment stolen from their shed and were asking for donations. We therefore decided to offer them the surplus items we had identified.

Brian Councilor, from the Men’s Group, came down on Friday 11th January 2019 to pick up the items. David Vicary, John Paisley, and Allan Waugh helped Brian to load up the trailer.

Funny Stories

Divorced barbie

On his way home, a father suddenly remembers that its his daughter’s birthday. He pulls over to a toy shop and asks the sales person, “How much for one of those Barbies in the display window?”

The salesperson answers, “Which one do you mean, sir? We have - Work Out Barbie, Shopping Barbie, Beach Barbie, Disco Barbie, Ballerina Barbie, Astronaut Barbie and Skater Barbie, all of which cost $19.95 each. We also have Divorced Barbie, for $265.95.”

The amazed father asks: “it’s what?! Why is the Divorced Barbie $265.95 and the others only $19.95? “

The annoyed salesperson rolls her eyes, sighs and answers: “Sir... Divorced Barbie comes with: Ken’s car, Ken’s house, Ken’s boat, Ken’s furniture, Ken’s computer, one of Ken’s friends, and a key chain with Ken’s balls on it.”

And You Thought that My Jokes Were Corny!

How will Brexit affect Christmas Dinner? No Brussels! Why is Christmas Just Like Your Job? You do all the work and the fat guy with the suit gets all the credit! One night a Viking named Rudolph the Red was looking out the window when he said, “It ’s going to rain”. His wife asked, “How do you know”. “Because Rudolph the Red knows rain , dear!
