Introduction

The use of spread-spectrum allows both touse small antenna suitable for portableterminals, as well as provides a robust andsecure modulation.

Nowadays two of the most important trendswithin the telecommunications userscommunity are secure communications andmobility.

Indra’s satellite communications remoteterminal MANPACK is designed to meet bothrequirements by means of using advancedand proven technology.

MANPACK II remote terminal

The design of the remote communicationsterminal developed by Indra is built aroundthe most advanced concept of efficientmilitary and civilian satellite communicationsnetworks.

Software-radio design concept of theMANPACK II modem allows differentwaveforms to be selectable from userwithout any change in hardware: QPSKSingle Channel Per Carrier (SCPC), DirectSequence Spreading SCPC, FrequencyHoping SCPC, and CDMA.

System overview

The network is a fully-automated DemandAssigned Multiple Access (DAMA) multistarand multibeam system that provides a veryefficient use of the highly-valued spacesegment. This DAMA network is designedto provide personal communications utilisingeither fixed, portable or mobile remoteterminals, and can support handle all thosetypes at the same time.

The network manager can handle severalwave forms access scheme within the samenetwork: CDMA, DS-SCPC and QPSK-SCPC,allowing to choose the most efficientmechanism to share satellite resources.

Services available are voice, data (IP) andSMS-like messaging.

Highlights

• Fully automated network, including DAMA,access control, accounting, terminal, services, QoS and group/prioritiesmanagement, full-network SNMPmonitoring and control, automatic powercontrol…

• X-band and Ku-band front-ends available, which allow the terminal to operate inmilitary or civilian satellites in any theatreof operations

• IP router-modem, optional 2 wire voiceinterface available

• Customer-specific applications can beloaded on to the terminal upon request

• Interface for data encryption (IP or link-layer)

• Full software-defined radio terminal: waveform definition by software configuration,CDMA, QPSK,DS-QPSK and FH-QPSK, whichallows the use of more appropriate waveform for each deployment

• Modem ready for SOTM: STANAG 4485and high-speed vehicles (up to 300 km/h)

• Point-to-point and network managedmodes, configurable through the frontmenu

• Asymmetrical and bidirectionalcommunications up to 2 Mbps
