But at Warwick Crown Court last week, Judge Richard Griffith-Jones accepted a submission by Andrew Fisher QC, defending, that there was no case for Jones to answer. The court heard that anti- social youngsters had been knocking on the door or windows of the house and then running off into the nearby park, chased by Mr Heathcote’s son or grandson. But when Jones banged on the window on 17th November, it was the pensioner who came out holding a broom which he swung at Jones, who dodged out of the way and laughed before re-joining his younger companions. And as Mr Heathcote was going back inside, he col- lapsed and died as a result of arrhythmia leading to heart failure. Commissioner wantsyour views on policing A SUMMER-LONG publicconsultation to find out people’sviews on policing and commu-nity safety has been launched.

The consultation will help the newWarwickshire Police and Crime Com-missioner, Philip Seccombe, shape thenext Police and Crime Plan, whichsets out the strategic direction forpolicing in the county, as well as howthe Warwickshire Police will workwith other partner organisations toreduce crime and improve communitysafety.

The commissioner is seeking theviews of residents, businesses, com-munity groups, partner organisationsand victims of crime in order to get aswide a range of views as possible.

“Listening and engaging with thepublic is a fundamental part of myrole and allows me to speak up onyour behalf to ensure that the police service is acting on your needs and concerns,” said Mr Sec-combe.

“It is only right that local peopleshould have a part to play in shapingthe Police and Crime Plan and I amkeen to hear from everyone whomakes up Warwickshire — whetherthey live here, work here, run a busi-ness here or who have been a victimof crime here.

“The survey is quick and easy tocomplete and I hope to hear from asmany people as possible.”

The survey asks people to considerhow different aspects of keeping com-

munities safe should be prioritised, including detecting and preventingharm, protecting the vulnerable andreducing crime. It also asks people tosay how safe they currently feel and torate how well the force is performing.

The survey is online at www.war-wickshire-pcc.gov.uk, with papercopies available by calling 01926412322, or by writing to the Office ofthe Police and Crime Commissioner,3 Northgate Street, Warwick, CV344SP. The consultation closes onFriday, 26th August.

SG DoorsRoller Shutter Garage Doors Specialist

At SG Doors we specialise in the fi tting of bespoke double skinned, insulated, remote control, electric roller garage doors that can be supplied to your specifi cations, including a range of different colours.

Essentially a Roller Garage Door is an insulated double skin aluminium curtain protecting your garage. With the double side brush in the guide runners and a curtain that rolls right to the fl oor, it is good for excluding draughts as well as effi cient and convenient at both restricting and allowing access to the garage.

FOAM FILLED INSULATED ALUMINIUM SLATS

SAFER THAN CONVENTIONAL Garage DOORSThe space saving allows you to park close to the garage door with no risk and also saves space inside the garage, giving you access to roof joists that would have otherwise been occupied by the garage doors. It also removes the danger of outward swinging garage doors striking unseen persons or objects outside.

The design of Roller Garage Doors means they are effi cient space savers; rather than swinging the door to the side or outwards in front of the garage, the garage door roller system means the doors roll directly up into a top roll system mounted above the door frame.

Two deny murderTWO people accused of murderingBethany Hill at a flat in Stratford earlierthis year will stand trial at WarwickCrown Court next month.

Kayleigh-Louise Woods and JackWilliams were in court last Thursday,14th July, where they both denied themurder of 20-year-old Bethany at anaddress in Hertford Road in February.

Woods, 22, also of Hertford Road,Stratford, and Williams, 21, of RedlandsCrescent, Stratford, spoke only to con-firm their names and to enter their notguilty pleas.

The trial will start on 1st August.

A46 closed fora month fornight repairs

The stretch affected is between junction15 of the M40 at Longbridge roundaboutand the A452 Interchange for Leamingtonand Kenilworth.

The closures kicked on Monday, 18thJuly, and will be repeated every night, from 8am until 6am, until Wednesday,10th August.

The road surface is said to be in need ofemergency repairs in places as it hasreached the end of it 15-year serviceablelife, said a spokesman for WarwickshireCounty Council.

Diversions will be in place. Thespokesman added: “Following consulta-tion with its Network Management Team,a diversion route has been agreed by thecouncil and it is accepted that the works

are urgent and extensive, requiring fullroad closures to ensure the safety of theworkforce and the travelling public.

“The urgent patch repairs are only atlocations where the carriageway has eitheralready failed and has had emergency tem-porary repairs, and is likely to fail in theshort term as it shows elevated signs ofdistress, or will not hold structure over thewinter maintenance period.

“These works are a holding measurepending a robust solution over the next 12months. All traffic management optionswere explored, however because the natureof the road and required repairs it is notsafe to complete the works under lane clo-sures as there would be no safety zonefrom the planed carriageway section to theopen live lane.

“Therefore the only traffic managementarrangement to complete the works is a fullclosure of the A46.”

A BUSY stretch of the A46 will beclosed in both directions every nightfor almost a month.

DRIVERS have a pes-simistic view of how thecountry’s exit from theEuropean Union will affectthem, according to a surveyby the Institute of AdvancedMotorists (IAM).

The road safety charityconducted a poll of over1,000 members and visitorsto its website between 27thJune and 12th July, askingtheir views of how the deci-sion by UK voters to leavethe EU would affect them asdrivers.

Of the 1,093 respondents, when asked if they thoughtthe exit would have animpact on drivers and ridersin terms of costs, nearly 50per cent said prices wouldrise. In contrast less thanfour per cent said theywould fall.

In terms of road safety,UK drivers and riders didnot feel leaving the EUwould change things for thebetter. Nearly 65 per centsaid there would be no dif-ference, while 16 per centsaid road safety would dete-riorate. Some 11 per centsaid road safety wouldimprove.

When asked if the UKwould have a better influ-ence over other key issuesaffecting motorists andriders, again they were notconvinced leaving the EUwould improve the situa-tion.

Just over 40 per centthought there would nochange in the UK’s abilityto control prices at the fuelpumps as a result of ourexit.

Again, just over 40 percent thought there would beno change in vehicle emis-sions when we leave .

And more than half of

Motorists downbeat after Brexit vote — surveyMOTORING NEWSthose surveyed thought

there would no change instandards of driver andrider training and testing.

Neil Greig, IAM RoadS-mart director of policy andresearch, said: “It appearsthat UK motorists are notfully convinced that theywill benefit from us leavingthe EU.

“At the very best theyfeel nothing will change, but at worst they think theywill lose out.

“Although our surveypaints a rather downbeatpicture of how UKmotorists feel, it does giveus a strong remit to repre-

sent their needs as keyBrexit issues are debated inthe months ahead.

“Ensuring that past roadsafety and air quality gainsare maintained will be akey challenge but we cannow explore new ideas toregain the downward trendin road deaths and seriousinjuries on British roads.

“Ideas such as reducedVAT on safety kit, incen-tives for training andembedding good roadsafety practice into pro-curement rules are all nowfirmly back on the table. It’s an interesting time to bein road safety.”

Jamshaid shines for OEsSTRATFORD slumped to a six-wicket defeat to Old Eliz-abethans at Swans Nest Lane on Saturday.

Ed Cunynghame (64no) fought a lone hand in Stratford’stotal of 131, with Hugh Selvey taking 5-26 for OEs. Onlythree Stratford batsmen reached double figures.

An opening stand of 96 between Pakistan internationalNasir Jamshaid (62) and Ashley Bullock (37) ensured thatfour quick wickets were incidental in an easy victory forthe visitors.

Gregory bags fourin Town thrashingSTRATFORD Town turned in a scintillating display ofattacking football to overwhelm near neighbours Eveshamon Saturday.

Spearheaded by four goals from ace marksman RichardGregory, Carl Adams’ side were five up at half-time andhad extended their lead to seven ten minutes into thesecond half.

The Robins rallied with three of their own as Stratfordunderstandably eased off, with the game finishing 7-3.

Gregory opened the scoring in the 12th minute, turningneatly in the penalty area to drill a sweet left-foot strike intothe bottom corner.

Stratford were 2-0 up when the impressive Dior Angussurged past Will Wellon down the inside left channel to slotthe ball past the advancing keeper.

With Stratford now in full flow, they added a third threeminutes later when the impressive Angus released SimeonTulloch down the left and the ex-Evesham wide man ran onto sweep the ball past Sawyer from a narrow angle.

The fourth goal arrived on 40 minutes when NiallCooper’s long clearance was flicked on by Will Grocottand Tulloch outpaced the Evesham backline to again finishcoolly past the helpless Sawyer. And in the closing minuteof the half, it was five with Gregory’s delicate chip overSawyer from the left of the penalty area.

Two further second-half strikes from Gregory made it 7-0 before Evesham rallied, scoring three of their own tomake the scoreline a bit more respectable.
