WARNING

REMARKS ON THE USE IN NETWORK NEIGHBORHOOD

The Electronic Parts Catalog was designed to be usedboth in single-user (stand-alone) or multi-user com-puters as in a network neighborhood. However, someremarks on the use in a network are necessary:

• The Electronic Parts Catalog is not a client/server-type applicative; thus, its use entails a great dataflow through the network. The installation has to bedone in network neighborhoods of the type file-server.

• Network installation must be very carefull. Make surethat the network in which the Electronic Parts Cata-log is to be installed can accommodate the additionalflow of data that will be originated.

• In case it be necessary, split up the network, restrict-ing the flow of data only to the computers on whichthe Electronic Parts Catalog is being used. If neces-sary, install the Electronic Parts Catalog in more thanone file-server in the network, with each server as-signed to fewer client computers.

• Advanced network neighborhoods working specifi-cally with Client-Server applicatives can experimentconsiderable performance decrease due to theamount of data that is originated by the ElectronicParts Catalog.

• Before installing the Electronic Parts Catalog in a net-work, it is imperative that you consult the systemadministrator or the technician responsible for thenetwork.

• For a suitably dimensioned network, the maximumnumber of simultaneous clients is 15 computers, dueto the restrictions imposed by the Microsoft® Access®database.

Types of Installation

First, define the type of installation that you wish to perform:. Single-user installation (‘stand-alone’). Multi-user installation (network neighborhood)

. Server installation

. Client installation

Single-user installation

In this option, the electronic catalog will be installed in onecomputer and will be used only in the same computer. All thenecessary files that are used in the catalog (both data, pro-gram and control files) are installed in the single-user com-puter hard disk; Therefore, it is not required that the CD-ROM be in the CD drive unit to allow the use of the catalog.The installation procedure is performed in a single step: Whenthe user chooses the ‘single-user installation type’, all thenecessary files are copied from the CD-ROM onto the singlecomputer’s hard disk.

Page 13: Manual EPC

13Electronic Parts Catalog - September 19992 - Installation

Procedure for SINGLE-USER installation:

1. Insert the CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive;2. Double-click the CD-ROM to open it;3. Select one of the options, Chevrolet or GMC, opening the

respective folder;

4. Double-click the file INSTALAR.EXE;

Page 14: Manual EPC

14 2 - InstallationElectronic Parts Catalog - September 1999

5. After opening the installation program, select the single-user option.

6. The installation program will ask you to supply informa-tion such as the name of the directory in which the pro-gram will be installed and the position on the Start Menuto place the shortcut;

7. After completing the installation, it might be necessaryto restart your computer. In this case, the program willinform you.

Multi-user Installation (network neighborhood)

In this option, the Electronic Catalog will be installed in sev-eral computers, enabling it to be shared by a multi-user net-work neighborhood.In order to run that way, the Electronic Catalog must be in-stalled in at least two different computers.One of these computers, which will host the programs anddatabases, will be named Server.The other computer, which will store only the minimum controlsrequired to allow it to ‘find’ the SERVER, will be named ‘Client’.Several client computers can be configured, provided thatthey always connect to the same server.

Page 15: Manual EPC

15Electronic Parts Catalog - September 19992 - Installation

Thus, in order to make the multi-user option run normally, atleast two installations are needed: one on the Server and oneon a Client.After that, a client-type installation on each new computerwill be enough to provide that client machine with access tothe Electronic Parts Catalog.

The multi-user installation program will ask the user whichstep would he/she wish to perform

Server Installation

The Server Installation, which should be performed only onceon each network, installs just the database and programs onthe network server computer.The Server Installation can be carried out from any networkcomputer that has a CD-ROM drive unit, i.e., not necessarilyfrom the network server computer.The only requirement for the Server Installation is the ‘net-work transparency’, that is, all the Windows client comput-ers can ‘see’ and share the data folder on the server com-puter.Note that it is not compulsory that a Windows NT server beused; since the Windows-based clients have access to theserver data folder, a Novell-NetWare, HP-UX, IBM-AIX, DEC-UTRIX, SUN-SOLARIS, SCO-UNIX server, among others, can beused.For instance, a UNIX system using TCP-IP protocol and NFS net-work service used to access Windows-based computers, will prop-erly perform as a database for the electronic catalog.

NoteThis kind of installation originates great data flow throughyour computer network. Refer to ‘Remarks on the use innetwork neighborhood’ on page 10 of this manual for fur-ther information.

Page 16: Manual EPC

16 2 - InstallationElectronic Parts Catalog - September 1999

Procedure for the MULTI-USER SERVER installation:

1. Insert the CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive unit of any net-work Client computer (this computer must use only theoperating system Microsoft® Windows® 95 or higher);

2. Double-click the CD-ROM to open it;3. Select one of the options, Chevrolet or GMC, opening the

respective folder;

TipBefore you begin theserver installation, cre-ate a new folder to storethe Electronic Catalogon the server computer.This folder must be ac-cessible to all the net-work clients. Rememberthe name you assignedto this folder, because itwill be necessary to findit during the installationprocedure.

4. Double-click the file INSTALAR.EXE;

Page 17: Manual EPC

Client Installation

The Client Installation, which can be performed on each net-work client computer that will be using the Electronic Cata-log, installs the control files (dll’s, ocx’s, etc.).

The data (database, illustrations, parts lists, etc.) and theprograms will not be installed, for they will be loaded throughthe network whenever needed.

In this type of installation, the user will be asked to providethe server’s path, on which the data and programs have beenpreviously installed.

The only mandatory requirement to carry on the Client in-stallation is that the client computer be running Windows®Ê95or higher, as specified in the minimum equipment require-ments section of this manual. It should be clear that the Cli-ent installation can only be performed after the Server in-stallation is completed.

Procedure for the MULTI-USER CLIENT installation:

1. Insert the CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive unit;2. Double-click the CD-ROM to open it;3. Select one of the options, Chevrolet or GMC, opening the

respective folder;

Model-type filteringClick the ‘Filter’ upper button to turn on or modify the filter,or alternatively click the lower button to turn the filter off.

Model-type filtering is a capability that allows you to select aspecific model of vehicle on a catalog (which usually com-prises a family of vehicle models) taking into account thevehicle’s Body, Version and Model Year.

Examples of model-type filtering are:

1. To select the 1998 GLS Sedan model on the Corsa catalog,turn on the filter, select Body ‘19 - Sedan 4 doors’, ver-sion ‘J-GLS’ and Model Year ‘1998’.

2. To select 1999 Double-Cab model on the S10 catalog, turnon the filter, select Body ‘7 - Double-Cab’ and Model Year‘1999’.

Whenever a filter is turned on, the electronic catalog willexhibit only the specific parts that belong to the vehicle modelfiltered.

This way, a parts list of a particular subject comprising let ussay 50 parts before model-type filtering, will present for in-stance 20 parts or less after model-type filtering (being alsopossible that this list does not contain any part on the subjectfor the filtered model).

It might happen that a filtered model does not hold any parton a particular subject.In this case, the parts list of that subject will be blank. (Forexample, on the Silverado catalog, when we filter the model‘5 - Grand Blazer’, the subject ‘Bucket and Components’will not exhibit any part for the filtered model.

The Model-type filtering can be performed in 2 ways:

• VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) decoding• Body/version/year selection

VIN decoding

On the upper portion of the filtering window, type the com-plete VIN of the vehicle you want to query. Click the button‘Decode’. The system will interpret and decode the given VIN,picking up options of Vehicle, Body, Version and Model Year ofthat specific vehicle.

TipVIN - The Vehicle Iden-tification Number (alsoknown as the chassisnumber) is an interna-tionally standardizednumber that indicatesthe main vehicle charac-teristics, such as manu-facturing plant, manu-facturer, production line,body, version, engine,model year, serial num-ber, etc.

Example: 9BGSC35ZXXC320137Vehicle: CorsaBody: 35 (Wagon)Version: C (Wind/Super/L/ST)Model Year: 1999

Page 33: Manual EPC

333 - Using the Catalog Electronic Parts Catalog - September 1999

After seeing the decoding result, click the ‘Filter’ button toactivate the filter and search only the parts belonging to thatspecific vehicle model. In case you do not wish to use thefiltering capability, click the ‘Filter off’ button.

The VIN decoding routine calculates, according to the givennumber, the vehicle type, the model (a combination of bodyand version) and the model year.

Body/Version/Year selection

With this option, it is possible to select the characteristics ofthe vehicle you want to filter. In the Filter dialog box, selectthe characteristics you want to filter in the following order:Vehicle, Body, Version and Model Year.

Replacement parts search Warning

Be very careful when using the data displaying a replacementpart (new) as the answer of a search.

When a part is replaced, it is possible to ensure that, for allthe applications of the canceled part (old), the use of a re-placement part (new) is feasible.

Therefore, when one makes a search using the ‘Canceled (old)’dialog box, the answer will be one or more parts that, cer-tainly, can be used in substitution of the searched part.

However, when one makes a search using the ‘Replacement(new)’ dialog box, the answer will be one or more parts thatwere substituted by the searched part. In this case, the re-placed parts MUST NOT be used in place of the replacement(new) part.

The search through the number of the replacement part(new) is for information only, and the effective use of itsresults should be very careful.

On the example of the previous page, both parts 52268860and 52283370 were replaced with part 93232022, which canbe used in place of any of the replaced parts (52268860 and52283370).

Nevertheless, the two replaced parts (52268860 and 52283370)MUST NOT be used in substitution to 93232022.
