blow moulding machine. It removes both magnetic andnon-magnetic metal contaminants from a slow, downward moving column of material, reducing machinedowntime, costly repairs and improving product purity.

Even the smallest metal particles in molten plastic canresult in a loss of production and expensive damage toextruders, injection and blow moulding machinery. Thecost of repairing a screw or barrel damaged by just onelarger piece of metal is enormous compared to valueadded for a Model CF Separator. This metal separatordelivers operational reliability, even at high throughputs.

The Model CF Metal Separator features automatic self-calibration and monitoring. It is a fully automaticseparation process with adjustable scanning sensitivityand rejects duration. The Model CF works so quickly thatmetal particles are constantly removed from free-fallinggranulate not only at the initial fill, but also at subsequenttop-ups. The metal contamination is discharged into areject container with a fast acting, air-powered separatingslide.

Model CF Metal Separators are available in four pipesizes from approximately 2.9" to 5.9" in diameter.

Features & benefits: Detects and removes even thesmallest metal particles from regrind and virgin material;Reduces machine downtimes and costly repairs, providing a rapid return on investment.

800,000 hours.

A key feature: this is the first power supply which can beconnected directly to the generator voltage without theneed for an intermediate transformer. Also, it has uniqueoptical indicators which display the status and conditionof the unit. Since it tracks dynamic loads, it can beoperated continuously even under high load conditions.

Special sensors in combination with a microcontrollercontinuously monitor wear factors in the power supplysuch as temperature, overload, faults and otherconditions. Intelligent evaluation of these parametersthen gives the user an overview of the status of the unitfor implementing maintenance measures, therebydrastically reducing the probability of failure of the overallsystem.

Its coloured LEDs in traffic light colours provide the userwith continuous information about the current load level, the stress level as well as the life time, a forecast ofremaining life expectancy. The indicators are brightenough to be seen and interpreted from several metersaway.

The usual 3-phase transformer used in wind powerequipment can be dispensed with, thereby savingmoney. Thanks to its broad input range of 380 - 690 V,the switched-mode power supply can be connecteddirectly to the generator voltage of the wind turbine.

Balluff has introduced anintelligent, energy-saving powersupply especially for use in windenergy equipment. The semi-potted device with an efficiencyrating of 93% is designed forhigh shock and vibration loads. It has long service life of nearly20 years with a MTBF of

Plenty of managers never asked, expected, or trained to beput in charge of other people. But when it happens, theseaccidental bosses often find that learning to manage is likelearning to swim by being dropped into the deep end of thepool.

Hank Gilman knows what that's like. As a top editor forFortune, Newsweek, and the Boston Globe, he has helpednurture some outstanding talent. His success can be attributedlargely to his management style, which allows him to treat hisemployees like, well, humans, while holding themaccountable. But he was far from a natural when it was time totake charge.

Gilman shares the lessons he's learned-through trial anderror-during his two decades as a manager. Writing in a warmbut no-nonsense voice, he offers straight-up advice on the insand outs of hiring, firing, motivating, and dealing with crankysuperstars.

Gilman argues that your employees should always come first-and that managing down, as opposed to managing up, willultimately lead to a successful career as a boss.

About the author:Hank Gilman is the deputy managing editor of Fortune. Overhis career, he has worked at The Boston Globe, The WallStreet Journal, Newsweek, and The Beaufort Gazette (SouthCarolina). He has also been a regular commentator on TheNightly Business Report on PBS.

In praise of the book:The reader should be able to pluck a few gems from the bookwithout trying too hard. I especially enjoyed his "Director'sCut." This was the final chapter that Gilman said he could notfind place anywhere else in the book. The outtakes may havebeen the best part.

I read this book in a day in a half and then gave it to someonein management at my operation. I think it should be requiredreading for any manager, especially those in thecommunications field, of which Gilman gives great examplesof what to do and what not to do when managing people.

reforms that began nearly two decades ago, the Indianeconomy has been undergoing an important transition---from a closed to an open one; to one where knowledgebased production of goods and services is commandinga significant portion of the economy. India has alsomoved away from a static economy that wascharacterized by a status quo-ist government control toone where economic liberalism is the driving force, andone where innovation in products, processes, technologies and systems is critical for the profitablesustenance of productive entities.

This structural transformation of the Indian economy isthe result of many factors, and each has involved theinterplay of international forces, influences, domesticabilities and efforts. The role of government, domesticindustry, international firms, research institutions, non-government organizations, and, of course, privateindividuals has changed significantly in the past fewyears, and one expects this to continue in the future. Thedirection is towards lower government command andcontrol in all sectors and greater role of the market placein creating the right set of incentives for all. All this is inthe context of an economy that is becoming more andmore integrated with the international economy, andwhere free movement of knowledge and technology goeshand-in-hand with the flow of financial and humancapital.

stance on TRIPS has been one that has seen varioustwists and turns, from being a diffident and hesitantsignatory to the TRIPS agreement to now being astrong votary.

In the Indian context, a large portion of the initial IPRregime in independent India was due to British legacy. The Indian Patent Act of 1856 was based on theBritish Patent Law of 1852. In this Act a patent holderwas granted some privileges for a period of 14 years. The Indian patent law has undergone manyamendments since then. Recently, amendments weremade in 1999, 2002 and 2005. The Patents(Amendment) Act 2005 has been effective sinceJanuary 2005 and is compatible with the Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property (TRIPS)Agreement under WTO. The Copyright Act, 1957,which was essentially based on the Copyright Act ofthe United Kingdom 1956, has been effective sinceJanuary 1958. This Act has undergone various

amendments since then in keeping with the times.

The World Economic Forum, in recognition of the importance ofinnovation in the global economic order, calculates the GlobalInnovation Index (GII). The GII assigns scores to 130 countriesbased on various innovation input and output pillars. The globalleader in innovation is the USA. This does not come as a surpriseas the USA has been the leading innovator and has a legacy ofover 100 years in innovation. In second place is Germany. WhileGermany maintained its position at 2nd in the rankings incomparison with last year, Sweden has risen in the ranking from12th in 2007 to 3rd in 2008. This is a result of increased inputs inthe innovation systems in the country. The United Kingdomfellfrom 3rd to 4th slot. Also, Singapore rose from 7th in theprevious years ranking to 5th in 2008. The other big gainer in thetop 10 rankings is South Korea which rose from 19thto 6th. Thebig losers have been Japan, which fell from 4th to 9th and Francewhich went from 5th to 19th in the rankings. researchers and the

support provided to them by the system in terms of training, expenditure and environment. South Korea, Singapore,Malaysia and Taiwan are the non-OECD countries that areleaders in this respect. The presence of Indonesia, HongKong, India, Thailand, Sri Lanka and China in the top 40countries in terms of human capacity only corroborates thefact these emerging economies are the ones to watch outfor in the future. The clear leader in terms of the humancapacity to innovate, however, is the USA followed byDenmark and South Korea.

One direct impact of innovation in an economy is that theawareness regarding technology and, therefore, its usageincreases. This creates a market for high technology goodsas well as other services to support the economic activitiesgenerated by the emergence of this new market. Thusinnovation would result in the emergence of services suchas insurance and financial services, research and trainingservices, etc. The other impact of innovation would be anincrease in the export of technology related goods. Thisoutput pillar measures these effects of innovation. Withrespect to knowledge, South East Asia does well with manycountries featuring in the top 30. India, China and Indonesiafeature at the 23rd, 28th and 29th places respectively in theknowledge rankings while South Korea features at the topslot. Interestingly, all the Asian countries show a significantincrease in their knowledge scores over the previous year.

The innovation efficiency is an attempt to understand theprecise drivers of innovation in the country. The innovationefficiency is the ratio of the innovation outputs and theinnovation inputs. Thus, if a country has a high innovationindex but low innovation efficiency it indicates that thethrust to innovation is on the inputs side and the outputsfrom the innovation process do not match the inputs into thesystem. However, a system where the outputs are higherwith fewer inputs in the innovation process would rankhigher in terms of efficiency. It may be noted here that whilethis is not an accurate measure of the efficacy of theinnovation system, it does serve as an indicator of theemerging economies in

terms of innovation. It is interesting to note that Brazil,India, China and Indonesia have high innovation efficiencyeven though they do not rank very high in terms of theGlobal Innovation Index.

Innovation is often based on making the user experiencebetter or more pleasurable. These innovations may be toenhance the appeal of the product or service according toemotional, cultural or social sensibilities or convenience ofuse. There are many examples of innovations in Indiawhich catered to Indian market conditions and sensibilities. In the 1980s, CavinKare revolutionized the sale of shampooby launching 8 ml sachets of shampoo. Another similarinnovation is pre-paid mobile services. A very visibleinnovation has been in the field of retail.

While the concept of discount stores has existed in variouscountries, in India the concept of organized retail waslimited to luxury products and services with a focus onambience. Pantaloons Retail (India) Ltd. launched the BigBazaar stores changing this conventional view of organizedretail. Possibly the most talked about innovation in recenttimes is the new small car by the Tatas, the Nano. Aimedattapping the middle class which currently purchases twowheelers, the Nano was designed keeping in mind Indianconditions and sensibilities along with the most importantfactors in this segment, the price-value proposition. TheTatas have filed for 34 patents associated with the design

of the Nano. Indian firms have been innovating on a largescale in the interest of their own businesses. Most of theseinnovations have essentially been directed toward makingproducts and services cheaper and more accessible to agreater portion of our population. Undoubtedly, anyinnovation which involves design of products requires largeinvestments in terms of time and resources. Therefore, these innovations are more likely to take place in largebusiness houses. In the case of India, innovation has grownsignificantly in the recent years. Patents filed in Delhi andMaharashtra together account for more than 50% of thepatents filed in India.

It is interesting to note that there appears to be nosignificant change in the trends in innovation across thecountry. The emergence of cities like Gurgaon, Bangaloreand Hyderabad in the field of information technology hasnot led to an increase in the number of patents filed in thesecities relative to other cities. One possible reason for this isthat while there is research and development taking placein different parts of the country, the patent application isfiled by the administration of the firm, which is invariablybased in either Delhi or Mumbai. An analysis of the numberof patent applications by field of applications shows thatChemicals and Drugs categories account for more than athird of the total patents filed in India since liberalization.Though there appears no clear trends in any one category, there is clearly a steep rise in the number of patentapplications in the Mechanical and Chemical categories inthe year 2005-06. While we cannot make any conclusionsbased on one data point, the sustained upward trend acrosscategories is a positive indicator in terms of innovation inIndia.

In any case, for whatever time that an untrained person(whether new or old, senior or junior) stays in anorganisation, he underperforms and that itself is anopportunity cost which one does not realise. An untrainedperson will remain a sub-optimal contributor for a muchlonger period (assuming that he will learn on the job) than itwould take to bring him up to speed through developmentalinputs.

So, development and growth of employees, yields returnsin terms of both financial investment and effective timespent on the job; motivation, additional commitment, retention and subsequent efficiencies are icing on the cake!

The other thing is the kind of impact that lack of well trainedpeople can have on customer experience. We, as a family, enrolled as ‘privilege’ members (obviously at a fee) of awell known group of health care clinics. The ambience, equipment and doctors are really very good. Rates are highand the usual greed of excessive ‘tests’ is there as with anyhealthcare service provider these days. While it was ourconscious decision to enroll with the clinic and I am notblaming anyone or complaining about this, one does expecta ‘little’ special treatment, or say, atleast anacknowledgement that they do have members in the‘privilege’ group. However, far from ‘acknowledging’ one as‘privilege’ members, most of the staff is not even aware ofthe existence of such membership, forget benefitsassociated with it.

On one occasion, when a staff member showed completeignorance about the benefits of the membership, I asked tobe allowed to speak to the duty manager. The dutymanager’s response was “Sir, he is new” ….. “So”, was myimmediate response, “you don’t train/educate your new staffon all the processes?” It is surprising that new staff was notmade aware of the programme directed towards asupposedly loyal/high value group of privilege members. Iam sure the formation of this group must have been a partof a core marketing strategy somewhere on the upper floors

of their head office in Ivory Towers.

But this was not the only time such a thing happened. Icontinuously sensed lack of education and developmentalinputs at the staff level. So while a lot of investment wouldhave gone in building the ultra modern clinics, staffinteraction makes me keep longing for my neighbourhooddoctor’s personal touch and at much lower costs. If only thehigh end clinic could ‘clone’ (not proposing propagation ofthe same in technical terms) the neighbourhood doctors’personal behaviour or explain the relevance of the strategybehind introducing privilege membership to its staff, myframe of mind would have been so different today.

And then there was this young employee of an airline whichpromises to be on time always and also lives up to itspromise! This was a stray incident when, due tocircumstances beyond anyone’s control, the Hyderabad-Delhi flight was delayed by several hours. There wereangry outbursts by aggressive Punjabi passengers, but thepoor employee, obviously had no training at handling suchsituations. That one incident would have put some doubt(rightly or wrongly) in so many of the airline’s (well earned)passengers’ minds.

Employee Development, then, for those who say “They willget picked up by someone else. Why should I developthem?”, is nothing but creating your own ‘clones’ orexplaining the relevance of your strategy to youremployees, so that when a customer walks in, you can beassured that he/she will get the same treatment as youwould have given, had you been able to be present at alllocations, all the time, for all customers. Just plain & simple!

of this millennium.

In this issue, I will deal with the subject of selection, development, retention and growth of Right People, I haveexperienced and observed. The two pillars of ‘CustomerService’ and ‘Right People’ processes are directly correlatedand have a direct impact on the success of organizations, assuming that, primarily ‘customer value creation’ is theraison d’etre and will cause the creation of wealth for theowners.

What is important, however, is that the following two types ofconcerns be adequately addressed and their solutionsinternalised before any meaningful outcome can be expected:

- “Once I train my people, they will get picked up by someoneelse. My entire investment will go waste. Then why should Itrain them?”

-“Yes”, there is total agreement, “it is very important to havethe Right People.” But probe a little deeper and one finds thatan understanding of the characteristics of ‘Right People’ ismissing.

While the latter, is a full fledged subject of research andit may not be possible to touch on it here, what surprisesme most is the former ….. When you pray for others,God listens to you and blesses them, and sometimes, when you are safe and happy, remember that someone hasprayed for you

Right People and Right People ProcessesJP Singh

Right People and Right PeopleProcesses are key factors for thesuccess of any business. While it isimportant for most organisations andindustries, I strongly believe that it isthe single most important factor forIndian health and hospitality sector, with the stage of evolution that theyare in at the end of the first decade

One area of concern for retailer is shrinkage (theft), whichcosts retailers an estimated two per cent of sales on anannual basis and losses due to spoilage / expiration, obsolescence, misplacement and markdown caused bypoor merchandise management, all of which ‘could bereduced by the better monitoring of objects and theirhandlers through RFID.

Retail worldwide is a key driver to adoption of EPC- basedRFID technology. According to a recent survey, 70 per centof retailers with annual sales above five billion are investingin RFID and will implement some form of the technology inthe next six to twelve months.

International buyers and retailers like Wal-Mart havealready directed their suppliers to adopt RFID

on their consignments at the case / pallet levels. Exportersdo not have choice they have to adopt if they want to beWal-Mart customers.

For retail, the real power of this technology resultsfrom associating unique identifiers with otherinformation of interest from fields in a database thatpertains to the item. Just a few examples as per retailapplication are:

Date of manufacture, time spent in transit, location ofdistribution centre holding the item, name of the lastperson to handle the item, amount for which the itemwas sold, payment method used in buying the item, expiration date, last date of service and warrantyperiod.

RFID tracking in general could help improve the integrity ofthe supply chain. By clearly identifying and tracking products, companies can maintain much tighter control over legitimateshipments and ensure the safety and security of the goods intheir bid to reduce costs, optimise supply chain processes andimprove productivity and profits. The benefits that RFIDtechnology offers are manifold and include improvedefficiency and visibility, lower costs, lower inventory levels yetconstant product availability, better asset utilisation andincreased sales through better out-of-stock goodsmanagement.

This technology has possibilities of being deployed in a bigway within India by virtue of its applications in detection ofcounterfeit merchandise, asset tracking, and traceabilityacross national/global supply chains, arresting ofpilferages/shrinkages, enhanced supply chain efficiencies, wastage control in supply chains.

EPC-based RFID technology provides solutions for just-in-time (JIT) manufacturing, mass customisation, "zero errorproduction", reduced cycle time, stock management of raw-materials / finished goods, warehouse management, sourcingand procurement, assembly, order processing, distributionand transportation, et al. With its varied usage across sectors;RFID can be termed as one of the most promising andanticipated technologies in recent years poised for nothingless than complete transformation in the supply chain.

Is EPC global India the only organisation for providingInternational standards in RFID?

Yes, our role needs to be clearly understood. We are notmanufacturers of RFID software or hardware. We providestandards to which hardware/ software vendors manufactureand develop their products such that they are interoperableand conform to international standards in RFID.

RFID will transform supply chain businessRavi Mathur

How does RFID help the industriesespecially manufacturing and retail?Could you detail the impact onvarious sectors?

A: RFID-enabled systems providinginventory data to sales clerk can providereplenishment and throughput data tostore managers, buyers and SupplyChain specialists. Tighter visibility intostore inventory should result in fewerinventory write-offs (outdated, seasonalor discontinued merchandise), andenable store managers to potentiallyshift inventory to stores where productsare selling more quickly. In the apparelindustry, where buyers make decisionsas much as six months prior to theselling season, adjustments to inventoryand stocking can make the differencebetween a profit and loss on a productcategory.

The USFDA may consider making this technologymandatory. Their prime concern is the safety of consumers.Indian drug companies need to act quickly, if thistechnology becomes mandatory in different markets, theywill have no choice. This is not as easy as slap and ship. Ittakes some time to adopt this technology.

Aviation industry

With EPC RFID chips, chances of luggage being misplacedare eliminated by' Airlines. Even if it does happen, it can betracked easily. It increases the speed of baggage transfers. And with standardised chips, the information can be madeuse of in multi-modal transportation.

Shipping industry

Thousands of containers get piled up in Inland ContainerDeport and at Seaports during congestion or strikes.

RFID can help to locate the exact container and identify thecontents inside them. RFID also facilitates security andsafety of shipping containers through secure electronicseals, now required under International mandates of USCustoms & Homeland Security under (CSI) ContainerSecurity Initiative etc.

Testing Centres

Electronic Product Code (EPC) in global Supply Chains istoday awarded to four RFID Testing Facilities in Europe,Taiwan and the United States the first EPC globalPerformance Test Center Accreditation Marks.

India does-not have any testing facility but there is anopportunity for Indian IT companies and research institutesto offer such testing facilities in India. They will require to beaccredited by EPCglobal India in line with Internationalrequirements. This will greatly help Indian Industry, particularly exporters in ensuring readability of theirEPC/RFID tagged products and ready acceptance byinternational buyers like Wal-Mart, Metro, Tesco etc.

(The author is CEO, EAN India. The article was firstpublished in the book titled ‘Supply Chain Management’ byIndian Institute of Materials Management)

On the manufacturing for example, the automotive sector haspiloted use of this technology. If you need to track the historyof a car as it enters for servicing, repairs etc, you can do thatwith the help of an RFID tag, which will be placed in the car.RFID also helps to differentiate whether the parts for the carare counterfeit or genuine. Indian automotive is seriouslylooking at adopting RFID for a number of, mission criticalapplications.

Pharmaceutical industry

RFID technology can also be introduced in the healthcaresector. Drug shipments will be scanned down the supplychain, from manufacturer to pharmacy. Authenticity ofshipments will be verified and information made available toparties. This can prevent products from falling into the handsof counterfeiters, who could dilute or alter the drugs and thenfoist them on unsuspecting pharmacies and consumers.

The pharmaceutical industry has found itself swallowing abitter pill: drug counterfeiting is on the rise. "Many of thesefake, diluted, and mislabeled medications pose a health threatto patients and a financial risk to manufacturers and others inthe healthcare industry.

Counterfeit drugs are a huge problem not only to our societybut also to the pharma industry globally. The annual cost ofcounterfeiting to the pharmaceutical industry is around $68billion. It ranges between 15-30 per cent of all medicinesdistributed and consumed worldwide. As a major exporter andmanufacturer of pharma drugs and other medical products, itaffects the brand equity of India in global markets.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) hasrecommended RFID as the best way to thwart illegal drugtrafficking. About 14.3 per cent of unapproved medicinesentering the US market are from India. It is in the interest ofthe Indian company to adopt the new technology, since ithelps trace their medicine supplies, and hence checkcounterfeits. It is also effective in the management of goodsclose to the expiry date.
