Get set for the school holidaysSign up for the holidayventure schemeIf your child is stuck forsomething to do thissummer then the YouthService’s HolidayVenture Scheem forthe school holidayscould be just whatthey’re looking for.Cronk-y-Berry Primary School isthe venue for schemes runningduring the first four weeks ofthe holiday, starting July 21, 28,August 4 and 11.

There are separate schemes forthose in Years four to seven andyears seven to nine. Pupils inyear seven, the first year atsecondary school, can opt foreither scheme, so can join upwith younger or older siblings.

Outings, crafts and activities willkeep young people occupiedwhatever the weather, saidDepartment of Education andChildren youth officer DaveHattersley.

The schemes cost £70 a weekor £18 a day, a reduction on lastyear, and there is a discountwhen siblings attend.

Dave said: ‘All these schemes

are run and organised byqualified DEC youth workerswho are, of course, policechecked. Activities vary fromscheme to scheme but includearts and crafts, sports and visitsto locations around the Island.’

In addition, an arts and dramaweek takes place at the YouthArts Centre in KensingtonRoad, Douglas, from July 28 toAugust 1 and will see childrenacting and singing in andcreating props, costumes andbackdrops for an end-of-weekproduction of ShakespeareRocks. The scheme costs £100and is suitable for ages eight to11.

The Youth Service projectSoundcheck offers a week ofmusic-based activities for yearsseven to nine, at the samevenue, in the week startingAugust 11. Participants willhave the chance to perform atthe Deep South Music Festivallater in the summer. Taking partcosts £100.

For more information visit theHoliday Venture Scheme pageon facebook, go towww.gov.im/hvs or call theyouth office on 686057.

There are just nine days to gountil the schools break up. Youwill know when it’s the last day ofterm because, by 4pm, most pubswill be full of teachers celebratingtheir release – albeit temporary –from the clutches of the childrenwho have ruled their lives for thepast 46 weeks. You will also be able to tell the school yearhas finished by the look of bewildered fearon the parents of those children, as theyface up to the prospect of trying to keepthose selfsame sprogs occupied. At primary level, the school gates havebecome conspiratorial centrepoints forguardians to plot ways to keep those littledarlings happy/quiet/amused/out of theway. This can mean anything from the sharing ofparental phone numbers just in casesomeone comes up with a genius idea thatcan keep a group of friends happy withoutcosting any money or leading to anycomeback from law enforcement agencies,to the drawing up of highly complicatedsleepover rotas. Here are some tips for parents of schoolchildren at the younger end of the scale.• Draw up your own map of the Isle of Man

marking the presence of every single

public toilet.• Further to the above, if you fancy a jaunt

along Douglas seafront, stock up on 20pence pieces so you can marvel at thewonders of the pay per pee facilities nowon offer. Worth every penny you spend*.

• If you are having trouble keeping yourchildren away from any particular placeyou would prefer they wouldn’t go to - egan amusement arcade, public house orGlen Vine – make up a particularly luridscary story to keep them away. Forexample: ‘Don’t go playing in the carpark next to government offices, otherwise the big bad politician may graball your pocket money.’

• Ensure everyone in the family has wellies– then put the kids in the gardenwhatever the weather, while yousupervise from under cover.

• Make sure that, when you’re liaising withthe other parents about things to do, youensure you book an event for yourselvesto celebrate the end of the holidays. Goto the pub and try not to trip overteachers drowning their sorrows at theprospect of a new school year.

*Any Treasury marketeers who want to usethat phrase to promote the toilet tax, pleaseget in touch to negotiate a fee.Follow Paul on Twitter: @NorbertsdadYou can read this column and previouspieces by Paul at isleofman.com

Artist’s Paul knows thatcountry mattersAn exhibition by Manx artistPaul Parker runs at Studio 42 inPort St Mary until September 7.Paul is a keen countryside walker whoseartwork and walking is inextricably linked.

He explained: ‘Hill walking has formed myover-riding interest as far as pure landscapeis concerned.

My aim is to tryand show myresponse to theworld aroundme – in asimple anddirect

way. By doing more and more walking onthe Island I found my awareness of thechanging seasons heightened.

‘This is my love, to be out in the landscape.Painting is observation and understandingand to me you have to get out in it tounderstand it.’

He added: This does not mean just beingout on good days, but in all weathers.Even on a bad day the sun could breakthrough, if just for a short time and youwon’t see it tucked up in front of the fire.’
