The , ladies of the SewingMeeting had had books oftickets to dispose of for theBilbrook-Bunson pig, andthough Mary Thompson had at'first demurred on principle atbeing a i?arty to "Any think todo with gammellin' an'lotteries" and had protestedthat as a church councillorshe felt she ought to consultthe Archbishop about a pigbeing mixed up with the churchfunds, she bought a ticket. Asthe Sewing Meeting took placeat the same time as the "pigdraw", it was not unnaturalthat the ladies should expresswonder as to "woh's wont'pig?" Suddenly there was aresounding knock at theschoolroom door and MattyPearson, either much elevatedwith the excitement of , " t he

'draw", or some thing else, 'announced in stentorian voice:"Mary Thompson's won t'pig,an' I've fetched it for her!"with this he placed a sack atMary's feet. The l a d ~ e s thereassembled had undeniablesquealed evidence that thatwhich Matty spake was indeedtrue. Now John Jorrocks, theimmortal Master of the HandleyCross Foxhounds, once said,"Confound all present whateats!" and for a person whohas never kept a pig, who hasno accommodation for a pig,had never intended, or wishedto keep a pig, to suddenlyfind herself possessed of one, obviously very much alive, iswhat we call "a capper". Somuch so in the case of MaryThompson that she went into aquick succession of what sheterms "hot sweats", and foronce was speechless.

The Bilbrook-Bunson's, LizzieLeckonby's parish magazineleaving friendship with whomhas occasioned so muchjealousy with Mary Thompson, conceived the idea of a" ffl" f . . 'ra e ' or ' a plg to asslstthe church funds. We have hadmany "raffles" fot:' cushions, dreadful pictures, and otherarticles the owners wished toget t:'id of, and which ticketholders were relieved they didnot win. A pig, however, isanother matter. We discusspigs, their condition, increasing weight , andfeeding, as some folk discussbooks or babies. Pigs are apart of our lives; and pigs,r a ther than po 1i tics, a ~ r edebated by stye-touring ,parties on sundays. ~

So the Bilbrook-Bunson rafflecaptured. the imagination ofthe vilLagers. They consideredsixpence to a ten 'weeks oldpig a good bet, and 't hetickets went like hot cakes. There were excursions to theBilbrook-Bunson's, batches ofticket-holders feeling theyhad a right to have pointedout to them the particularanimal in which they held astake. There were speculationsas to its weight, and whatweight it would ultimatelyattain.
