Reflection

October is Respect Life Month. We are also in the midst of celebra ng the Year of St. Joseph. This year we are looking to the witness of St. Joseph as a defender of life. He didn’t hesitate to follow God’s will of faithfully caring for and protec ng Jesus and the Blessed Mother. St. Joseph’s example reminds us that we are also to care for, protect, and defend the lives of our brothers and sisters.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church, Paragraph 2270, states that human life must be respected and protected absolutely from the moment of concep on. From the first moment of his existence, a human being must be recognized as having the rights of a person - among which is the inviolable right of every innocent being to life.

Jer. 1:5: Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you.

During this Year of St. Joseph, each of us can find in him “an intercessor, a support and a guide in mes of trouble.” Joseph shows us how to say “yes” to life, despite our own fears, frail es, and weaknesses. For it is Joseph who was “chosen by God to guide the beginnings of the history of redemp on. He was the true ‘miracle’ by which God saves the child and his mother.”

We can start to become more like St. Joseph by asking ourselves a few ques ons and reflec ng on them: Do we realize how precious every person is? As we go about our day, do we treat people accordingly? How can we help those in our society who are struggling to welcome new life, like moms who are pregnant or paren ng in difficult circumstances? How can we reach out to those having a hard me seeing the worth of their own lives? How do we reassure those at the end of life who are afraid they are a burden or feel like their lives don’t have meaning?

At mes, we may feel like we can’t make a difference, or that we are unequipped for what God is asking of us. But St. Joseph “teaches us that faith in God includes believing that he can work even through our fears, our frail es and our weaknesses.” When human life is threatened, when our brothers and sisters need support welcoming or embracing life, may we lovingly respond with the faithfulness of Joseph. OCTOBER—MONTH OF THE HOLY ROSARY

October is the month of the Holy Rosary. During the month of October we ask you to arrive five minutes early before Mass in order to join in reci ng a decade of the rosary.

GIFTS In today’s readings, we discover that material wealth alone does not keep us from discipleship. We will see that there are other gi s more important than material wealth, but even so, it is how we use our gi s that ma ers most. Today’s scriptures point to the value of the gi s of wisdom, trus ng in God, and le ng our ac ons reflect the love of God from within. It is not gold that causes us to fall, but rather the desire for gold above all other things. From the readings in Wisdom and Hebrews, we find the source of God’s gi s in our lives. Wisdom is more valuable than worldly possessions. In Hebrews, we are challenged to look at our own values and admit honestly what controls our lives. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

OFFERING OF LETTERS

The Offering of Le ers is Coming to St. Agnes on October 30-31. Did you know that over 270 million people are facing extreme hunger—up from 135 million before the pandemic? That 1 in 4 kids are at risk of hunger in the U.S.? That 40% of Black and La no families struggle to feed their children? And that ending hunger can start with a heart-felt le er? The Just Faith Commi ee will have everything you need to reach your Senators and Congressman on October 30 and 31. If you would rather send an email, just go to www.bread.org/go. Contact Donna Walton at 925-212-7679 or [email protected] for more informa on. FEAST OF FAITH—Agnus Dei A er the sign of peace, the priest breaks the host into pieces, and prepares the patens or plates of hosts for the assembly. In the early church, “the breaking of the bread” was the name given to the en re Eucharis c liturgy, so central was this ac on to the meaning of the Chris an life. For just as the one bread is broken and given to many people, the many are made one in receiving it.

During this ritual ac on, we sing an ancient litany, calling on Jesus as the “Lamb of God”—the words used by John the Bap st when he pointed to Jesus walking beside the Jordan River (John 1:29, 36). In calling Jesus “the Lamb of God,” John was already poin ng to the death that Jesus would die: in giving his life, Jesus would become the Paschal Lamb of the new covenant. During the Mass, when we call on the Lamb of God, we call to mind his self-sacrificing love, his blood poured out for us, and we ask this compassionate Lord for mercy and peace. —Corinna Laughlin, Copyright © J. RESPECT LIFE MONTH

Each week during this Respect Life month of October, there will be a short medita on about St. Joseph. He is a Respect Life model for us, especially during this year of St. Joseph. MEDITATION 2: While the angel of the Lord appeared to Mary to announce that she would bring forth the Savior of the world, it was revealed to Joseph in a series of dreams how God’s plans would be brought to fulfillment. As Pope Francis highlights, “God trusted Joseph, as did Mary, who found in him someone who would not only save her life, but would always provide for her and her child.” (Excerpts from Patris corde, © 2020, Libreria Editrice Vaticana.
