Lavender Lake Copper OccurrenceCopper and nickel were discovered in 1991 by G. Pogson, Prospector, at the le May Code townships boundary, local- ed 30 km southeast of Kenora {figure 2.3j. TKe property accessed by the Witch Bay road off Highway 71. A 450 ih long trail leads from the road to the most-westerly showing! G. Pogson has exposed mineralization in 1 1 pits and trenchei over a strike length of approximately 400 m. Five of ihes^ are shown in Figure 2.5. i

KENORA—1991
Figure 23. Lavondar Lake copper occurrence: 1) mafic to intermediate mctavolcanicj; 2) mafic lo ultramafic intrusive rocks; 3) granitic rock*. Geology after Trowell et *1. (1987).
The general geology of the area is shown on the Ontario Geological Survey's Preliminary Map P.3076 (Trowell et al. 1987). The property is underlain by a northeast-trending, ultramafic to mafic sill in contact to the north with granitoid rocks of the Dryberry batholith and to the south with mafic metavolcanics of the Bigstone Bay group (Ayer et al. 1991). Although not indicated on Preliminary Map P.3076, the author (M.R. Hailstone) had observed 2 peridotite layers close to the southeastern margin of the predominantly gab broic sill, indicating the sill to bc differentiated to the north west, in conformity with another sill along strike to the west- soulhwest. Subangular, l to 2 m sized blocks of peridotite derived from the southernmost layer occur within the gabbro just above the top of the layer. The sheared nature of the con tact between the sill and the mafic volcanic flows is expressed by a 30 m wide topographic low between the units.
Mineralization"w1ffiin tne sill appears to be associated with 0.5 m wide minor shears striking between 0300 and 045" and G. Pogson has used this as a guide in his prospect ing. Mineralization exposed by G. Pogson in trenches con sists of chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite and minor pyrite. Chalcopyrite is the dominant sulphide mineral, occurring as massive fracture fillings and as a filling within l cm wide tension fractures related to the minor shears. However, min eralization in some of the trenches occurs as patches of net- textured sulphides and as sulphide blebs, strongly suggesting an initial magmatic component to the concentration process. Small patches of massive pyrrhotite give a positive reaction .when tested for nickel content with dimeihylglyoxime.
The best mineralization uncovered to date is in 2 trench es opened up in gabbro by G. Pogson on the crest of a hill 20 m north of the southern peridotite layer (see Figure 2.5, trenches l and 2). Grab samples taken by the Staff Geologist from these trenches gave the following results on analysis:
14 980 ppm Cu, 64 ppm Ni, 42 ppm Co, less than 10 ppb Pd and 0.002 ounce Au per ton from the north trench; and 9500 ppm Cu, 288 ppm Ni, 159 ppm Co, less than 10 ppb Pd and 0.002 ounce Au per ton from the south trench fTemiskaming Testing Laboratory, Mines and Minerals Division, Cobalt).
A third trench approximately 200 m to the west of these 2 trenches (see Figure 2.5, trench 3) exposes massive tremo lite with magnetite layers that define the primary attitude of the sill. The layers strike 060" and dip 55 0NW. Discrete 2 cm thick layers of up lolVo disseminated pyrite are also pre sent A cumulative grab sample taken by M.R. Hailstone from this trench primarily for PGEs gave the following results on analysis: 80 ppm Cu, 343 ppm Ni, 103 ppm Co, 388 ppm Cr, less than 10 ppb Pd and nil Au (Temiskaming Testing Laboratory, Mines and Minerals Division, Cobalt).
A fourth trench approximately 100 m south of the 2 trenches on the hill (sec Figure 2.5, trench 4) has exposed a 0700 trending, silicified shear zone within the gabbro, 5 m north of the southern peridotite layer. This trench is within 25 m of a northwest-trending fault that terminates the differ entiated sill. Sulphide mineralization consists of up to 59k combined pyrite and chalcopyrite as disseminations, lamina tions and patches. No pyrrhotite is present. A blue-grey min eral that may bc galena or molybdenite was observed in a 2 to 3 mm wide lamination within the shear. A grab sample taken by the author from this trench primarily to evaluate it for gold gave the following results on analysis: 15 240 ppm Cu, 166 ppm Ni, 166 ppm Co, 16 ppm Cr, 75 ppm Sb, 89 ppm Zn, 56 ppm Pb, 40 ppm Bi, 602 ppm Mo, trace Au and trace Ag (Temiskaming Testing Laboratory, Mines and Minerals Division, Cobalt).
A fifth trench (see Figure 2.5, trench 5), which is within the mafic metavolcanics and located 700 m to the east of the 2 trenches on the hill, exposes two l m wide sulphide-bear ing shears separated by 2 m of barren mafic-flow material. The shears contain siliceous, tourmaline- and graphite-bear ing knots and laminations with \ 0fo to 27o chalcopyrite, pyrite and pyrrhotite. These shears may have followed the original interflow-sediment layers. The shear zones strike 0600, par allel to the strike of the sill, and arc 30 m south of the sheared contact between the sill and the mafic volcanics. Grab samples taken by the author primarily to test for possi ble volcanogcnic-sulphide concentration gave the following results on analysis: 1735 ppm Cu, 410 ppm Zn, 207 ppm Co, less than 10 ppm Pb and trace Au from the north shear; and 1120 ppm Cu, 27 ppm Zn, 59 ppm Co, less than 10 ppm Pb and trace Au from the south shear (Temiskaming Testing Laboratory, Mines and Minerals Division, Cobalt).
In addition to its potential as a copper-nickel prospect, the property may be valuable for 2 other commodities. The massive tremolite may bc of value as a carving stone. The tremolite is massive, 5 to 10 m thick and at minimum 200 m i long, though further prospecting is required to fully delineate. its extent. Secondly, l to 2 m thick, flat-lying quartz veins5
16
2.23338
occur in the sil! within 10 m of the contact with the Dryberry batholith. These may have some potential as crushed quartz aggregate for decorative purposes. The veins are pure white and massive and do not appear to contain any sulphides. The environment is similar to that of quartz veins currently being exploited for decorative stone by Crystal Quarries Ltd. at the contact between the Mulcahy gabbro and the Atikwa batholith southwest of Eagle Lake (see "Mining Activity" section, this report).
Li summary, the potential of this property as a magmatic- sulphidc occurrence suggests that differentiated sills north and west of Gibi Lake should be prospected for copper, nickel and PGKs. Furthermore, silicified shears should be prospected for gold, since the environment is similar lo that of the largest past producer of gold in the Kenora Resident Geologist's District the Wcndigo Mine, 7 km to the southwest

GENERAL GEOLOGY
The Gibi Lake area comprises the eastern part of the Lake of the Woods Metavolcanic-Metasedimentary Belt situated within the western part of the Wabigoon Subprovince of the Superior Prov ince.
Generally, east-trending, isoclinally folded metavolcanics and metasediments (Units 1 to 4). intruded by mafic to ultramafic and intermediate to felsic intrusions (Unit 5). occupy the central and southern parts of the map area. These rocks are bounded to the north, east, and southeast by felsic to intermediate intrusions (Unit 6) possibly of batholithic proportions. A diabase dike and minor glassy 'basaltic* diabase dikelets (Unit 7) of Proterozoic age post date all other bedrock units, which are Archean in age. Pleis tocene and Recent deposits cover substantial portions of the bed rock.
The metavolcanic, metasedimentary, and mafic to ultramafic intrusions, have been metamorphosed from the greenschist to lower almandine amphibolite rank.
2.23338
Interpretation of fold types is based on the mapping portrayed here and subsequent mapping by the senior author and regional interpretation by G.W. Johns (Geologist. Precambrian Geology Sec tion. Ontario Geological Survey. Toronto). Intrusion of internal and bounding granitoid bodies deformed and reoriented the earlier developed isoclinal folds. A major east- to northeast-trending zone of shearing, the 'Crowduck Lake-Witch Bay Shear Zone' extends from Witch Bay, of Lake of the Woods, through the northern portion of Gibi Lake. Other zones of shearing having the same trend are also present Diabase dikes intrude northwest-trending fractures. Late faulting along northeastto north-northeast-trending fractures have displaced the diabase dikes and developed pseudotachylite in the southeastern part of the area.
