KIKONAIThe first stop in your Hokkaido trip
Every year on January 13th, four young men
perform a ritual purification at the Samegawa Shrine
by dousing themselves with cold water several times
day and night. On the 15th, they carry sacred icons
of four Shinto gods and perform a purification
ceremony in the ice-cold waters of the Tsugaru
Strait. This ceremony has been held for over 180
years as a prayer for a good catch and harvest. It is
held in conjunction with fireworks shows, food
festivals, and other events at Kikonai Town.
