A popular father of two fromPitt Meadows is makingthe best of each day as hebattles colon cancer.

by Troy [email protected]

Jayden Baily planted his feet, his legs set roughly two feetapart, knees slightly bent, backand arms straight.

He wound back, looping hisgolf club around his shoulder.

Jayden then swung the clubforward with all his might.

A sharp crack broke thesilence, signifying titanium con-necting flush with the ball, thatsliced slightly to the right andsailed into the blue sky.

Considering Jayden is just fiveyears old, it was an impressivetee shot.

Onlookers cheered loudly.Jayden somewhat sheepishly

made his way over to his dadBlake and gave him a high five.

The Pitt Meadows boy suc-cessfully hit the ceremonial firsttee shot to kick off the sold-outBLAKESTRONG Invitational GolfTournament, a fundraiser for hisdad and the rest of his family.

The May 3 tournament at PittMeadows Golf Club saw 140golfers play in support of Blake, who has an aggressive form ofcolon cancer.

The family patriarch is battlingthis disease head on, not justfor him but for his wife Julie, for Jayden, and for his youngestson, three-year-old Rylan.

A sales representative in theelectrical industry, Blake is ondisability as he endures bi-week-ly chemotherapy treatments tofight the cancer, which is stagefour, meaning it has spread toother organs.

“That’s a scary thing to hear, when you hear you’re stage fourcancer,” the 31-year-old said.“When I first heard about mycancer, I heard it from my gen-eral physician who has been mydoctor since I was three monthsold. All she was able to read wasa biopsy report that came back

and said I have cancer.”What he initially thought was

a stomach bug or parasite turnedout to be much more sinister.

After coming home to Canadafrom a friend’s wedding inCancun, Mexico in November2012, Blake started experiencingstomach pain.

“I thought it was just mystomach sort of get-ting back to normalfood, or just a littlebit of something that’strying to work its wayout that may take aweek or so,” Blakesaid.

A couple of weeks passed andthe pain persisted. Blake decidedto see a doctor.

Being that Blake had justreturned from a foreign country,it was thought a parasite mayhave been the cause. Resultsfrom a blood test and stool sam-ple came back negative.

Blake spent part of ChristmasEve at Ridge Meadows Hospitalbecause the pain was so excruci-ating.

He went in for a CT scan, and

a radiologist detected a hole inhis bowel. Once again, a parasitewas believed to be the culprit.Blake spent four days at RMH.Antibiotics didn’t help; painclung to the inside of his stom-ach.

He underwent a colonoscopy, and that’s when doctors foundthe tumour. During the proced-

ure, the tumourwas so large, doctors couldn’tpush the scopepast it.

“That wasa painful partthat I actually

remember,” he said. “You’repretty much out for the colon-oscopy. They call it conscioussedation. You’re not supposedto remember anything but youcan follow directions. The onepart I remember was them tryingto push further up. It was hor-rible.”

Blake was initially positive, upbeat. He hoped the tumourcould be removed.

But he and Julie received badnews before the surgery.

The tumour was large andaggressive.

A colectomy was performedFeb. 8. A third of Blake’s colonand lymph nodes were to beremoved during the procedure.

But it proved to be too dif-ficult to get at a tumour thatwas large and socked in.Doctors also found numer-ous other tumours alongBlake’s stomach lining.

“I wake up from surgeryand I get that horriblenews that they weren’table to get it [the tumour] out,”he recalled.

He wanted to get started withchemotherapy as soon as pos-sible, knowing that aggressiveforms of cancer react well totreatment.

The first round of chemo “wasthe worst,” Blake said.

He was taking a drug to con-trol his nausea and had a badreaction to it, barely sleepingover the course of five days.

“I literally went crazy,” Blakesaid. “I couldn’t sit still, I waspacing all over the place, Icouldn’t do anything. I couldn’t

focus on anything, my visionwas all weird. There is nothing Icould do to calm down.”

At that point he didn’t want todo any more chemotherapy.

“I can’t see myself being ableto do what that first round was12 times over the course of sixmonths,” he said.

Throughout this ordeal, thediagnosis, the chemotherapy, thestress and anxiety, Julie, Blake’swife of two years and partner ofeight, has been his rock.

“I don’t know how she doesit,” he said.

And Blake’s legion of friendscontinue to rally around him.

Prior to the golf tournament,Blake’s supporters organized apub night March 10 at RoostersCountry Cabaret that drew 400people.

“It’s amazing, the supportthat we’ve had,” he said. “I’vealways been able to makefriends sort of wherever I go.My wife says, maybe that’s whyit happened to you, becausenobody else would get the sup-port like I’ve had.”

Asked about the future, Blake, who has lost roughly 30 poundsover the past few months, start-ed to cry.

His future is uncertain.“One of the first things, when

we found out, my wife and Isaid was, this isn’t right, you

know?” Blake said, chok-ing the words out. “Wehad so many plans to dostuff in our future. All Ican do right now is sort ofcope, day by day. I don’twant to try too hard to

look into the future. It’s tough tosee, right now. I try to live eachday for what it’s worth, for whatit has for me, right?”

Anyone willing to donatemoney to this family can visita website that has been set upat http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/337960/. To date, thewebsite has generated more than$30,600 in donations.

Funds can also be dropped offat any credit union in B.C. Thetransit number is 11730809.

All proceeds go to Blake andhis family.

Maple Ridge mayor calls adowntown lot a “key piece”of property.by Maria [email protected]

Fourteen consolidated lotsbought by the District of MapleRidge have been pulled off themarket temporarily.

The District bought the 14 lotsin January 2011, and demolishedthe houses on the properties, inorder to sell it for redevelopment.

Maple Ridge Mayor ErnieDaykin said the marketing hasbeen put “on hold” for a while asthe District has been a “victim ofour own success” with the down-town incentive program spark-ing so much development in thedowntown core.

Daykin said with so much hap-pening in the downtown coreand “a lot on the market,” coun-cil decided to wait for a whilebefore continuing to market the

property.“There is still interest in it,”

Daykin said. “It a key piece of

property.”The lot is located between

Haney Place Mall and Valley Fair

Mall. Currently, the District islevelling off and maintaining theproperty.

But Daykin said it is “all abouttiming,” and he doesn’t believe itwill be a challenge to sell it whenthe time comes.

Having bought and cleanedup the property, it has put theDistrict in the “driver’s seat,”Daykin said.

“We don’t want to accept justanything,” Daykin said, addingthat they want a “really welldone project.”

“It’s not like we’re under thegun,” he said.

But, Daykin said there’s a “fineline” between making thingshappen as a municipality andbeing in competition with otherdevelopers.

“We’re not developers,” hesaid. “We’re there to facilitate.”

Council plans to look at mar-keting the property again in thefall, Daykin said.

The District of Maple Ridgespent $3.7 million to buy the 14lots.

Joanne Olson headed a charity for four years.by Maria [email protected]

A group of volunteers and board members were atFriends In Need Food Bank on Tuesday wishing itsexecutive director well as she steps down from herposition.

Joanne Olson said she won’t be continuing as execu-tive director because she doesn’t feel she can give 100per cent at the taill end of her cancer treatment.

“I don’t know if I’ll have the energy,” she said ofthe demanding job of running a food bank that feeds afew thousand people a month in Maple Ridge and PittMeadows.

Olson has been struggling with ovarian cancer formore than a year, and she said she needs a few moremonths to recover.

“I didn’t want to leave [the food bank] hanging,”she said.

And, she added, during her recovery process, “I justdon’t need the stress now.”

Olson said she will be doing some travelling and alot of gardening this summer.

Olson was the executive director for almost fouryears, and she said she has a lot of memories, includ-ing the annual Christmas parade where the food bankcollects money and food donations, and dealing withpallets of questionable food that shouldn’t have beenaccepted.

Heading up the organization has been a very“hands-on” job, Olson said, and she has had to beflexible with her time, responsible for day-to-dayfinances, staffing, fundraising, and networking in thecommunity to “make sure you are out there.”

Leaving the food bank is “bittersweet” for Olson,“because I like the job – but I don’t think I can do thejob... the way I like to do it,” she said.

Before coming to the food bank, Olson ran a restau-rant, worked for the United Way, and was the execu-tive assistant to a member of Parliament.

“I like challenges,” Olson said. “I like to go in andfix things and let them grow.”

Mary Robson is volunteering as the acting executivedirector at the moment.

A blockbuster film with‘A-List’ actors will alsoinclude baby brothersfrom Maple Ridge.

by Troy [email protected]

At the risk of mixingmovie cliches, MapleRidge’s own dynamic duowill be appearing in amovie about the man ofsteel.

Chris and CandiceColgan’s twin boys Cruzand Ryder were cast asbaby Superman “Kal-El”in the summer blockbusterMan of Steel, that pre-mieres June 14.

“The closer [the pre-miere] gets, the more excit-ed I am,” Candice said.“Superman is the most rec-ognized comic book char-acter in the world. The factmy boys are immortalizedfor life, I am just so excitedabout that.”

The twins were used inone scene, of Kal-El beingborn.

The brothers werechosen for the role whilestill “preemies” in hospital.

“The role… fell right intoour lap and when we com-mitted to the talent agencyand to Warner Brothers,we had no idea whatmovie our boys would bein,” Candice shared.

The parents were told themovie was called AutumnFrost (a code name theyused for many reasons, including security andtraffic control) but whenCandice decided to do alittle investigating andgoogled “Cast of AutumnFrost” she found out themovie was actually Man ofSteel.

“I was so excited,” shesaid. “And who doesn’tlove the original movieswith Christopher Reeves?”

When she took the twinsfor their costume fitting,Candice asked some ofthe crew if her boys wereactually playing “BabySuperman.” They con-firmed that these boyswere, in fact, going to playthe baby Kal-El.

“I was overjoyed and feltthat the role was so fittingbecause I felt my boys real-ly were little ‘Supermans’[due to] their severely pre-mature birth at 29 weeks,”Candice said.

Both boys weighed justthree pounds at birth andwere born by emergency C-section at Ridge MeadowsHospital.

The family has beenwaiting for a year-and-a-half for this movie, and thepremiere is fast approach-ing.

“One of my boys [Ryder]is in two of the trailers, too, which was also veryexciting to watch andRussell Crowe plays the

father,” Candice said.“Russell was amazingto work with. He wasalways so concerned forthe babies’ safety on setat all times and he was sonatural with them… not tomention charming and anamazing actor to watch atwork.”

Man of Steel stars HenryCavill as Clark Kent/Superman, Amy Adamsas Lois Lane, and Russell

Crowe as Jor-El.Other stars include Kevin

Costner, Diane Lane, andLaurence Fishburne.

According to IMD, theplot revolves around a

young journalist who isforced to confront hissecret extraterrestrial herit-age when Earth is invadedby members of his race.

Our View

Democracy…a good thing

Now that the dust has settled andeveryone has had a chance to catchtheir breath after what – for many, atleast – was a breath-taking electionnight last Tuesday, it’s a good time toconsider some of the positive thingsthat the entire election campaign gaveus.

For one thing, itgave us, as all free andopen elections do inour blessed part of theworld, the sweet taste ofdemocracy.

While we’re disheartened that so fewpeople partook of that heady bouquet– one that millions of people aroundthe world would literally die to bring totheir own countries – those who chosenot to vote exercised their rights, andas such, they, as much as anyone else, earned the government that will lead usthrough the next four years.

That’s how democracy works… andit’s a good thing – certainly better thanthe alternatives.

Another positive that came out of theelection campaign, is that we will berepresented by the best possible peoplein Victoria. We chose them, and theyrepresent the majority of hopes andwishes for our province, for our com-munities, for ourselves, and for ourfuture.

That’s democracy, too. And that, too,is a good thing.

But let’s not forget those who stoodfor election, despite having been ableto garner more support than their suc-cessful opponents. They are all peoplewho believed strongly enough in theirvisions for our communities that theyoffered those visions for all of us toshare.

That sharing of ideas and ideals ofservice is no less important an aspectof democracy than the final outcome ofthe vote.

And that, too, is a good thing.Congratulations, all!

– B.G.

Mea culpa.I have no truly honourable

choice other than to admit myguilt.

Indeed, I have to admit thatI’m probably guiltier than most, because, while I am not a full-blown professional statistician,by any stretch of the imagination,my personal background gives me– or at least, it should give me– a slight leg up on most otherpeople as ordinary as myself.

From childhood, I always hadan interest in and better thanaverage understanding of mathematical concepts.

And my post-secondary education includedcourses in statistical analysis, so I do have abasic understanding of the language of statistics(although “basic” really is the operative word, university was a long, long time ago).

Unlike most people, who could not care lessabout such things, terms like standard deviation, random sampling, and variances are not entirelyforeign to me.

Especially, I am fully aware of margins of error(which most people think they understand, buteither they don’t, or they ignore them whenconsuming statistical information) and a nastyconcept, confidence limits, that appears in nearlyevery poll you’ve ever read or heard – but hardlyanybody ever explains what it means… becauseit means virtually any poll could be meaningless– and in fact, statistically speaking, a certain per-centage of polls MUST be meaningless.

Add that to my awareness of the weird poll-ing results out of the Alberta election just a littlewhile back, and some statistical nonsense thatappeared in polling results in Quebec not terriblylong ago.

The bottom line is this: we in the media – andI have to add myself, in particular – should havebeen more careful about reporting and speculat-ing on the indications arising out of the pre-elec-tion polling that seemed to indicate that the NDP

was heading for a landslide vic-tory on May 14.

And that the BC Liberals wereplunging over the edge of a polit-ical cliff and into oblivion.

In our defence, it is not uncom-mon for political parties to dis-appear into the kind of politicalabyss that we were all predictingwas about to engulf Christy Clark– and she did lose her own seat.

I’ll admit that’s a pretty weakdefence, however, consideringthat, other than Clark herself(who will undoubtedly graciously

accept a seat that will be given up for her by oneof her more successful minions – also undoubt-edly in return for some pretty extensive favours– at taxpayers’ expense, to boot, because that’sthe way party politics works), the BC Liberals,as a whole, fared reasonably well on electionnight… okay!… more than reasonably well: theykicked the NDP’s butts.

It’s even weaker when I consider that BCDeputy Premier Rich Coleman told me – twoweeks before the election, and without a hint ofirony in his voice – that his reading of the situa-tion indicated the BC Liberals would win.

And they did – in part because, among themany political and personal mistakes he hasmade along the road to his current unsuccess,Adrian Dix spent too much time patting himselfon the back instead of formulating a real mes-sage for voters. In short, he overreached his con-fidence limit.

In statistics, that’s the line that reads some-thing like, “These results can be consideredaccurate within stated margins of error 19 timesout of 20.” (Nineteen out of 20 is a pretty stan-dard 95 per cent confidence limit.)

While a lot of people take that to mean thepolls are 95 per cent accurate, it really meansone of every 20 polls result in meaninglessresults – like the ones before the election.

My own confidence limit has a crack in it.

Dear Editor,Librarian cuts are not devastating

[Librarian cuts devastating, May 17Letters, TIMES].

I am now a retired teacher.When teaching, I advocated

a change in the amount ofresources spent on libraries. Thepowerful librarian associationbrought my comments up tothe BC Teachers Federations asbeing unethical. I can now com-ment with what many teachersknow, but about which theycannot speak freely.

I commend the board forstanding against the librarian lobby. Cuttinglibrarian time is a good decision. It allowsresources to be put to better use, like small-er class sizes.

Librarians have in the past 10 to 20 yearsbeen busy protecting their position with dis-torted facts of their need in the school.

Librarians are just “not with the currenttimes.” In high schools, most librariansspend more than 50 per cent of their timeas high-paid supervisors.

Libraries are not the resource informa-tion they used to be. In high schools, I haveseen libraries spend thousands of dollars onbooks that are never read.

Most books could easily be put inresource rooms for English classes, sinceother subject areas rarely use library books.I think the subject teacher is a lot betterqualified to teach students how to researchinformation.

I would rather see class size reduced thanfull-time, high-paid supervisor/librarians.

In elementary schools, it would be betterto have lower class sizes, and put booksin each class – perhaps putting books in

carts to move from one grade toanother.

Teachers are trained to inter-est their students in reading.

Library rooms could be usedto cut down the use of port-ables. Money budgeted forbooks could be used for class-room technology.

Libraries are just not an eco-nomical use of school scarceresources.

This is a changing world.Printed books are becoming obsolete. So arelibrarians.

Children with ropetripped elderly ladyDear Editor,

My 87-year-old mother lives in theWesbrooke Senior’s Residences in PittMeadows.

On the evening of Saturday, May 11, shedecided to go for a walk around the block. As she was walking along Ford Road, shesaw some children playing with a rope. Thechildren waited until my Mom got up to therope, and then they pulled on it, which, ofcourse, tripped my Mom and made her fall.

Fortunately, she did not break any bones, but she was bruised, bloody, and as youcan imagine, completely shocked and con-fused.

I want to convey my disappointment anddismay in the behaviour of these children.I’ve lived in Pitt Meadows for years and justrecently moved my Mom here. I was com-pletely disheartened that this could happenin our lovely community.

On the bright side, a Good Samaritancame along and saw that my Mom was dis-oriented, and she, very kindly, walked myMom back to her building. She wouldn’tleave my Mom until she was safe inside.

I want to thank this woman very muchfor her loving and compassionate care ofmy Mom.

Animal welfare

Vaccine could keepyour pet healthyDear Editor,

Just to remind people of the importanceof vaccinating your animals, and mostimportantly, the cleaning up of your ani-mals: although vaccination is not a 100 percent guarantee, it is still very important, just as important as cleaning up after youranimals.

Both my dogs are vaccinated, andunfortunately, one is in the hospital, wait-ing to find out if she has parvo.

Other than walking around the neigh-bourhood, the only park they visit is JordanPark.

I continuously see people having theirdogs off leash, chasing balls or just wander-ing around. This is not an off-leash park, and how can you clean up after your dogsif they are loose? You may not know theyare going, or you choose not to care.

Anyone who has visited this park in thepast few days to a week, please keep an eyeon your pets, and take them to a veterinar-ian if they appear sick.

Esophageal cancer has been recognizedas a fireman’s disease. There is no differ-ence between Jim’s death and a firemanwho gets crushed in a collapsed structure.

Jim passed early because of his 20-plusyears of service to our community.

Goodbye to a fine womanMrs. Gloria Morrisette also recently

passed, and her funeral took place lastSaturday.

In 1944 Mrs. Morrisette arrived in MapleRidge at the age of 36. I knooow!! Thatmeans she was 104 when she passed.

Mrs. Morrisette was a wonderful person. She wrote in the Haney Gazette, whichwas back in the time of lead set andbroadsheet.

She raised a great fam-ily, mostly girls, and atlast count, I think she hadsomething like 22 greatgrandchildren.

In a discussion withmy youngest son aboutthe many changes Mrs.Morrisette must have seenduring her life, he slowlyexplained to me that thepace of change is accelerat-ing.

He said within a decade,Elon Musk would be putting carson the road that had autopilots.

“Don’t older people realizethat there won’t be automobileaccidents? Insurance rates godown. The emergency wards

won’t have accident victims, and wewon’t need as many traffic policemen.”

This sent me, of course, to my newfriend – my iPad – and discovered thestory of Tesla Motors Inc., which is actual-ly projecting that technology will be avail-able within five years.

Anthony Levandowski, product man-ager for Google’s self-driving car project(Google actually has a guy in charge),says, “Google expects to release the tech-nology within five years.”

At a family dinner, my youngest sontried to convince me that, in the future, Icould have a drink, get in my car, punchin the address, and my car would deliverme there.

His older brother, a member of theRCMP, got into a philosophical discussion.

Would that be impaired driving?Just saying…

Shopping at theEconomy Cottage orgift shop at RidgeMeadows Hospital, helps a worthycommunity cause.by Troy [email protected]

Tucked into a row ofbusinesses on thesouth side of Dewd-ney Trunk Road,

you’ll find the EconomyCottage, an unassuming littleplace that could use somebig exposure.

Proceeds from sales at thethrift store help the RidgeMeadows Hospital auxiliaryfund much-needed equip-ment and programs for thehospital, and funds fourbursaries a year at $1,500apiece for local studentsinterested in nursing.

The Economy Cottage sellsused clothing and items, all donated by the public,

with proceeds going to thehospital.

All those who staff thestore are volunteers.

Betty Schultz, the treas-urer of Economy Cottage, isa relative newbie with theauxiliary – she’s only beenwith them for 10 years.

“Originally when I retiredI joined for something todo,” she said. “And I neverleft. I enjoy it, the staff isfriendly.”

Two years ago, the aux-iliary raised $190,000 forhospital equipment.

The auxiliary, which thisyear celebrates six decadesof service to the hospital, also runs the gift shop at thehospital.

RMH is welcoming a newgift shop, expected to openthis month.

The Economy Cottage islocated at 22264 DewdneyTrunk Rd.

He represented the Dewdney riding (as it wasknown then) from 1966 to 1972 and again from

Avery frustrat-ing problemthat many dogowners encoun-

ter is that of submissive, excitement, or conflicturination.

This happens most oftenin puppies and youngfemale dogs. It may hap-pen when the dog is fear-ful or overly submissiveabout being approachedand takes on a submissive posture with earsback, retraction of lips, avoidance of eyecontact, cowering, lowered body and oftenturning onto the back.

This type of urination may also happenwhen the dog is overly excited, especiallyduring greetings.

Usually in both situations, the dog is con-flicted in its emotions.

It may be socially attracted to the owneror visitor but also displaying some fear oranxiety.

For instance, when the owner comes homethe dog may be conflicted between excite-ment and vigorous petting combined withverbal reprimands or fear of punishment, which make the dog more fearful and sub-missive.

The treatment of these puppies or femaledogs would involve reducing the pet’sexcitement and arousal, reducing the fearand anxiety, and training for a calm andrelaxed greeting behaviour in the future.

Training a dog that has submissive andexcitement urination problems involves con-sistently approaching the dog with a calm, less assertive manner and lots of positive

reinforcement withtreats and rewards, and never physicalpunishment.

All punishmentshould be by verbalcommands only andnever the use of thehand.

The hand shouldalways be friendlyto the dog to receivetreats.

It is important to train the dog in situa-tions that it is already familiar with such as“go to your bed” or “go to mat.”

If the dog is used to getting rewarded forthis, it is a familiar positive experience andif you use the mat or the bed as a location togreet them they are less likely to be fearfulor submissive.

Often it is important to downplay thegreeting and this may even involve ignoringthe dog when you first arrive home.

Let the dog approach you and then kneeldown, speak softly. Allow the dog some timeto settle down on the bed and offer a favour-ite treat or toy.

For excitement urination problems, refrainfrom eye contact, physical contact, etc. untilthe pet calms down.

You may even need to stop and walkaway if the dog becomes too excited.

The key is to always train the dog that youcoming home is not really that exciting andthere is also nothing to fear.

It will take time and patience, but most ofthese pups and young dogs can be trainedat an early age so you can enjoy them ratherthan spend so much time cleaning up urine.

Fear he couldn’t playhockey kept a teenagerfrom making transition.by Megan StewartSpecial to The TIMES

Cory Oskam looks likeyour typical teenage goal-tender. His broad, fleshyframe fills a net and evenin the gym for ball hockey,he positions his five-foot-eleven body to stop shotsas if he’s wearing volu-minous padding.

His movements aredeliberate and calm. Whenhis teammates score thedeciding goal after theschool bell has rung, theboys scream, fist-pumpand pile on each other tocelebrate their heroics.Oskam, composed, lookson.

He plays midget housefor the Ridge MeadowsMinor Hockey Association, but two seasons ago,Oskam was a goaltenderfor the Vancouver Angels, the city’s only hockeyassociation for girls. Twoseasons ago, Cory wasAnneke, a girl not comfort-able in her body becauseshe felt like a boy.

“I was stealth,” he said.“No one knew I was trans.My teammates didn’tknow until… they stilldon’t know, probably.”

Oksam came out a weekbefore Christmas 2011. Hestayed home from schoolfor two days while hisclassmates at BritanniaSecondary learned aboutgender non-conformity,transitioning and trans-gendered people. Theywere told the girl theyknew would return toschool a boy.

He had the support ofstaff, teachers, and theschool district. Studentswith questions wereencouraged to approach acounsellor.

He said he hasn’t experi-enced any discrimination.“I’ve been treated the wayI want to be treated — asa male. I don’t think any-one has treated me differ-ently because I’m trans or

because I’m transitioning,”Oskam said.

“There was one littlesong that was a bit trans-phobic, but we clearedthat up.”

He wasasked fewquestions, but onekept com-ing up:“What’sgoing tohappen inthe locker room?”

Oskam said the answerwas simple. “He’s maleand he’ll be in the malelocker room.”

When jock talk is mind-lessly punctuated withhomosexual insults andthe word “gay” drops intoconversation as an insult,

Oskam speaksup. Hisfriends andsome class-mates do thesame whengiven theopportunity.

“All myfriends are

girls and I was more out-going and I kind of led theconversation, whereas inthe boys locker room, Ijust sit there and change,”

he said. “They’re funnyenough that I laugh butthey’re also just kind ofstupid sometimes.”

He doesn’t shower butinstead heads home aftergames before completelyundressing. He behaveddifferently among girlsthan he does with boys, who are boisterous, fam-iliar and not generally asmature as Oskam, whohas become a self-pos-sessed and articulate advo-cate courageous enough tospeak publicly about hisexperience.

He has delivered work-shops and spoken at dif-

ferent events. He deliveredthe keynote address lastFriday at the ninth annualInternational Day AgainstHomophobia, hosted byQMUNITY, B.C.’s queerresource centre.

For the occasion, hebought his first suit. Andhe shaved, he said.

Organized sport is alsomaking a transition. NBAveteran Jason Collinsbecame the first activeprofessional male athleteto announce he is gay, andthe NHL supports You CanPlay, a campaign to elim-inate homophobia fromhockey.

Next month Oskam willattend an LGBT sportssummit in Portland spon-sored by Nike.

And the association thatgoverns high school sportin B.C. made it possiblefor gender-variant athletesto play on the team oftheir choice. B.C. SchoolSport bylaws now states,“A student-athlete mayparticipate with the oppos-ite sex in a sex-segregatedsport on the basis thatdoing so would be consist-ent with his or her genderidentity.”

Oskam said this latestdevelopment may openthe door for him to play asport he previously shiedaway from, like basketballor badminton. He delayedannouncing his transitionbecause he worried beingtransgendered might pre-vented him from doingwhat he loved.

“The one thing that wasstopping me from transi-tioning was hockey. WhenI wanted to transition, when I wanted testoster-one, I wanted to play girlshockey. I wanted to bemale, use male pronouns, but play girls hockey,” hesaid. “My friends werethere. I was really good atgirls hockey. I played rep.I was up in the top.”

Gay role models likeCollins defy the stereotypethat hold back young ath-letes like Oskram. Indeed,Oskram is also an inspira-tion to others.

Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You canfigure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes.
