2.6. English World
Let’s listen to some interesting things about London, the capital of England,
and Edinburgh that is the capital of Scotland.
London
I want to introduce the city where I was born: London.
London is the capital of England and United Kingdom.
Its primary geographical feature is the Thames, a
navigable river which crosses the city from the south-
west to the East. London is a multicultural city and
London's diverse population draws from a wide range of
peoples, cultures, and religions.
London has a lot of visitors, not only because of its
theatres, cinemas, shopping streets, restaurants, hotels and nightclubs, but
also its historic treasures such as Westminster Abbey, Big Ben, the Houses of
Parliament and Buckingham Palace. In addition, London has the vast green
spaces of Hampstead Heath, Hyde and Richmond parks; big street markets in
Camden, Brick Lane or Portobello Road and many original old pubs.
Shopping in London
In my free time I like going shopping. Here in London I have the opportunity
to do it. London has a lot to offer from big department stores to exclusive
boutiques. There are many areas to go on shopping trips, such as Oxford
Street, Covent Garden and Knightsbridge. And, of course, London has many
street markets, such us Portobello Road Market. It is in Notting Hill and is one
of the most famous street markets in the world. The Saturday antiques market
is the most popular but the street market is six days a week. Portobello Road
is a long, narrow street.
Shopping, like most of London's pleasures, doesn't come cheap. Knightsbridge
has two of the most famous department stores in London, Harrods and Harvey
Nichols and other well known designer shops. And of course, Oxford Street! It
is a massively busy area of London and has million of shops and about 200

million visitors per year! You find here: Marks and Spencer, John Lewis, and
the great HMV record store. London is a very good place to go shopping and
with big shopping areas. There are restaurants and cafes that are situated along
these shopping areas, you can shop and then rest sitting in one of them to have
a coffee or whatever you want.
Edinburgh
Edimburgh is the capital of Scotland located in the
Central Belt region of the country. With a population
of approximately 450,000. Edinburgh has been the
royal capital of Scotland since 1437. It is a magical
city. It has a cosmopolitan atmosphere and the natural
landscapes are stunning. It is worthy to come and visit
this city.
I like this city very much. I will give you in detail the landmarks to visit when
in the city:
Edinburgh Castle. Edinburgh Castle, home to the Edinburgh Tattoo. The
castle has been continuously in use for 1000 years and is in excellent
condition.
Abbey and Palace of Holyroodhouse. In 1128 David 1 of Scotland founded
the Palace. The Palace is a royal residence, and hosts the Queen's Gallery
containing a collection of art from the Royal Collection.
St Giles' Cathedral . The historic City Church of Edinburgh is also known
as the High Kirk of Edinburgh and takes its name from the city's patron
saint.
Camera Obscura. Castle Hill. Over 150 years old, the Camera Obscura
focuses light from the top of the tower onto a large dish in a dark room
below, allowing a 360 degree view of all of Edinburgh!
The Scottish Parliament (eastern end of the Royal Mile, opposite the Palace
of Holyrood House)— A unique building designed by the Spanish (Catalan)
architect Enric Miralles.
Scott Monument. Built in 1846 to commemorate the life of Sir Walter Scott
after his death in 1832.

Royal Botanic Garden. Very impressive gardens
with a collection of interesting plants. Great place to
wander around on a sunny day, or to sit and have a
picnic. The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh was
established in 1670 and during the twentieth century
acquired three Regional Gardens- the mountainous
Benmore in Argyll; Dawyck in the wooded hills of the
Scottish Borders and Logan on the Gulf Stream-
warmed southern peninsula of Dumfries & Galloway
Edinburgh Zoo. It is the largest and most exciting wildlife attraction in
