Recently, a resident told the Town Council

she saw tiny worms around the gully drain of her bathroom, and she thought they might have come from the tap water.

The Town Council inspected the water tanks and found no contamina-tion. After investigating the house, they found that the worms were crawling up from the gully drain.

No one wants creepy-crawlies in their bathroom. Or anywhere in the house! But you’d be surprised at the places bugs can call home, in the cleanest of houses.

The worms were the larvae of a fly in the Psychodidae family, com-monly known as the drain fly or moth fly. You’ve probably seen one of the flies yourself, just like the one on the top of the page. Don’t worry, the picture isn’t to scale – the actual fly is only this big: /()\ .

It loves damp and dark places, and the slime mold that grows in your drain provides food for its larvae, making your bathroom prime real estate.

Once they emerge, the adult flies can start laying eggs in five hours, and in another four days, a new generation of flies are ready to say hello. They live for about three weeks.

By themselves, the

flies are harmless, do not bite, and collapse into puffs of grey dust when touched. They can, however, carry bacteria.

To get rid of them, flush out your drains with bleach and hot water.

If that doesn’t work, it means the slime mold is still there, and you should clear the drain of debris, then give it a good scrubbing.

Beat the buzzIf flies are giving you

the buzz blues, try this. In an old jar or bottle, mix water with rice wine or natural vinegar, and a drop of soap. Top it with a funnel. The flies will be attracted by the wine or vinegar, go down the funnel and drown in the solution. Rinse and repeat!

We painted our town red over the Chinese New Year,

with big gatherings to wish each other good health and fortune. Mandarins were exchanged, ang paos given, and lo hei-ed!

Second in a “Share It” series:

Project Love

Festivities are about celebra-tion, care and love. And love

is making sure people are looked after. With these beliefs, volunteers from our town built Project Love.

Its first undertaking was a spring-cleaning in preparation for the Chinese New Year, for those in need – especially those living alone. All it took were loving hearts, will-ing hands and a bit of detergent.

At the end of January, with a team of about a hundred members of the PAP Youth, RC and ITE, Project Love warmed some 25 flats in Block 318, Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1.

Days prior, the team went door to door asking if the owners would like help with their spring clean-ing. Then, on 26 January, teams of four gave a good scrubbing to each flat that said yes. Dr Intan also visited the flats, and presented each with a hamper of sundries and well-wishes for the New Year.

All the households were thankful for the help, care and conversation. The committee intends to continue the programme during festive seasons to keep spreading love and good cheer – and make sure no one is left behind.

Mdm Leng Sow Wah lives with her husband, but more often than not, he’s in Malaysia looking after family af-fairs. The couple used to run a food business, but Mdm Leng stopped after arthritis made it difficult for her to move

around. Once in a while, she helps out with the Lions Befrienders, who are just down-stairs. “I clean what I can, but the volunteers really helped me by cleaning the walls, lights and ceiling. They did a very good job.”

Mr Chung Yat Wah now lives by himself – his wife passed away four years ago. His friends call him Ah Wah, and if you’ve met him, you’re his friend. The outgoing 79-year-old is full of smiles, and has his flat covered with pictures

of his excursions, many with the Lions Befrienders and at events held nearby. “The cleaning was well done – they did a great cleaning in my bathroom.” Before we left, he showed us his collection of baseball caps!

A little knowledge can go a long way, especially if given with a

big smile. And that’s just what our young envoys from the Ci Yuan YEC and Hougang Secondary did, over the past few months.

With training and materials from the NEA, Dengue Patrol Volunteers went door-to-door, showing residents how to look out for – and prevent – mosquito breeding. They paid special attention along Hougang Avenue 8, where 60 cases of dengue were reported. In all, a hundred volunteers reached out

to houses all across our town!Another team of fifty envoys had a

different task – to spread awareness of the new places where smoking is now banned. To reach as many people as possible, they went to Hougang Central, and with a good deal of tenacity, spoke with more than 500 people in two hours!

Look out for our young environmental envoys – they’ll be on duty once a month in the Hougang and Ang Mo Kio Centrals, for a good while to come!

Then about a hundred of us trooped across to the function room with the lions, the children petting the lions all the way.

The seventh day, traditionally known as Ren Ri – everyman’s birth-day – is when, by Chinese custom, we all get one year older. In Malaysia and Singapore, it’s also the day when we toss a fancy raw fish salad, yu-sheng, for abundance, prosperity and vigor in the new year.

“In 2006, people were still moving in, but we’ve held this event every year since 2007,” said Mr Henry Phua, chairman of the Grandeur NC. “We’ve made it a Grandeur tradition. And traditions create a community.”

Just before noon on the seventh day of the Lunar New Year, it

poured with rain – always an auspi-cious sign!

We didn’t have to wait long for our good luck to materialize: When the lion dancers arrived, they had to perform at the main entrance to the complex, not beside the pool, as had been planned.

After a welcoming dance for Mr Seng Han Thong, one lion performed Cai Qing – “picking the greens”. The lion ate a whole plate of mandarins with lettuce, spitting out the bits he didn’t want. The Feng Shui meaning for spitting out greens at the entrance to a building is that wealth is fall-ing before that home, because the Chinese for “lettuce” sounds like the phrase “to make money”.

With mandarin slices, the lions spelled out the Chinese for “May you see fortune every day.”


Over the last few months, we celebrated the holidays together as a community. And together, we did our part for charity.

Through the efforts of the Neighbourhood

Committees of Seletar Hills East and West, and Cactus Sunrise, the call was put out to rally at Begonia Road on 26 January with goods to donate to those in need. And rally we did, filling a container with clothes, food and other goodies for the Salvation Army. Just in time for the Chinese New Year.

The stage was set with performances, food and bal-loons – all we had to do was show up at the Christmas and New Year’s party at the Sunrise Place playground on 29 December. Hundreds of us had a great time with our families that evening.

Some 400 of us thronged Selaseh Park on 22 December to cel-ebrate Christmas. With a charity bazaar and plenty of good music, we all en-joyed the evening – and the news of new bus services for Seletar Hills.

Combining business with Christmas, we had a gathering

on the evening of 23 December at the Atelier Villas. Joining some 150 of us, Mr Inderjit Singh answered questions and took notes as we discussed mat-ters like identity, governance, ageing and the cost of living.

Afterwards, we settled down to a buffet dinner and drinks to enjoy performances by the kids.

It was a very cosy party!

A Christmas Conversation


Family fun was the name of the game at our first

Regentville Year End Family Day, held on 29 December last year. Through the hard work of the Regentville NC, we had fire-fighting demonstrations, CPR classes, crime-prevention exhi-bitions, goodies to take home, and even personal well-wishes from Mr Yeo Guat Kwang.

Getting into the thick of it, there were bargains to be had at the flea market and some stunning similarities at the parent-child lookalike contest. And no worries for the little ones who didn’t quite have daddy’s mole – they had plenty of fun at the art contest.

We all had a great time at a great party – probably the best one yet, here at Regentville!

Going places

with the We shopped in style – and

cheaply – with our NC, just before the Chinese New Year. Scores of us were taken on a tour of wholesale centres and factories all across Singapore, from Jurong to Woodlands. We sampled things hot from the oven and fresh from the sea – the shopping tour covered all kinds of places. Bags loaded with goods at wholesale prices, we had a great time.

The Gardens by the Bay are prob-ably at their best in the evenings,

and late last year, our NC made it easy for us to visit as a family. Some 150 of us were ferried to the Gardens in three buses, where we were left to explore for a good three hours. A hearty packed dinner was also provided, after which we were ferried home, with no worries of crowds, traffic jams or parking. The tour was an almost instant sell-out!W

Can more be done to help singles with housing? We pay the same dues as everyone else, and I don’t think it’s fair that we have so many restrictions imposed on us when it comes to buying a flat.

I don’t think we should have to pay for the LUP at all. I think the lack of lifts on every floor was an oversight.

My new neighbour is very hard to get along with. He complains about the smallest thing. Can I get help?

All my friends in other places have had their flats upgraded. Are there any plans to upgrade mine? And, I would like to know what to do about the water damage to the ceiling of my flat.

For almost ten years, I have had to wake up at 4am to close the windows before the noise from the coffeeshop downstairs begins. Is there anything that can be done?

The constant changes to the CPF rules are confusing. Now, I’m really worried about whether I can pay for my flat when I turn 62.

Where we feel safe and secure, and where we love, laugh and rest. Unfortunately, home can also be where the downstairs dog barks at moths and the flat upstairs throws curry out the window. And some-times, home is a place where you sit and worry about changes you can’t get your mind around.

To address these problems, the latest in a series of Town Hall meet-ings was held at Block 424A Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3. Fielding questions were our MPs, Mr Ang Hin Kee, Mr Seng Han Thong and Dr Intan Azura Mokhtar – with officers from the Town Council and HDB standing by.

Towards the end of the meeting, Mr Seng said, “As Mr Ang has better knowledge on the ground here, I’ve been mostly an observer in this meeting. But from what I’ve heard, I can say that, whoever we are, we are all part of Ang Mo Kio, and part of Singapore.

“We are getting older, and we have the same kinds of problems. And so we come together to think of new solutions. One thing remains for sure – good neighbours make for a good life.”

Mr Ang concluded the meet-ing with good news for all – noise

barriers will be installed beside the MRT tracks along Ang Mo Kio. The work will be done in stages. And for some good news really close to the ground, the hall where the meeting was held would soon be expanded – “So at our next discussion, perhaps it will be a little cooler and quieter.”

Keeping in good health

It’s not always hard to keep in good health, both body and

mind. Keep moving. Keep learning. Of course, a little help won’t hurt.

To keep more of our seniors hale and hearty, the Active Ageing Carnival came to Kebun Baru on 10 March. Seniors came from all corners to get their health checked, swap stories and knowledge at the booths, and learn about nutrition and exercise. Starting with a good old workout on the spot.

There were massage booths too, for physical therapy – popular with all!


A FABulous partyIt can be hard to make that first step

from stranger to neighbour (though the step from neighbour to friend is quite easy). Not everyone is easygo-ing enough to be able to knock on the door and say, “Hi! I just moved in, and I just wanted to say hello!”

Saying, “Good show, eh?” or “Better luck next time!” is much easier. And with that in mind, we held a FAB - Familiarization and Bonding party, at Buangkok Crescent on 23 March. With a colouring contest for

the kids, games, and a superb MC, old neigh-

bours had a great time together, and new ones got to know each other.

For the early birds, there was even

a chartered tour of the neighbour-hood. And we all appreciated the precise sounds of the school orches-tra who played when we got back.

Dr Intan came to say hello to us, and in par-ticular, to the parents who brought their kids to the party!

Dinner and Dance, held at the Yio Chu Kang CC on 16 February.

Red, for the colour of the Chinese New Year, and cel-ebration of the coming of spring and the year of the snake.

Red, for the colour of love and St. Valentine, which we blended with our springtime occasion.

And red, for the colour of our best-dressed couple out of the 240 of us who came for a great night of dinner, drinks and dance, in just about every style you can imagine!


Part festive, part food, and a whole lot of fun. That was how

we had the opening of our new Senior Activity Centre at Block 469 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 10.

Dozens of volunteers from Stanchart made the morn-ing a special one. They talked to – and played games with – some 70 seniors of the centre. You should have heard the great cries of “Bingo!!” when someone scored. Mostly from the volunteers.

Leading the lo heiShortly after the last “Bingo!”, Prime Minister Lee came to greet all of us. He presented the five winners of the lucky draw with their prizes and officially opened the centre before leading us in the lo hei. Photographers scram-bled for cover, dodging seasoning, shrapnel and flying (sliced) fish from the more enthusiastic tables.

Our new centre serves seniors Mondays to Fridays, 9am to 5pm. Exercise, games and health talks are some of the many services it offers.

Volunteers from StanChart helped run the show that day, talking to and playing bingo with our seniors.

After PM Lee officially opened the centre, everyone did the lo hei together.

当天我们结合了节日、美食和其他各种欢乐来庆祝这个特别的日子。

当天早上，数十名来自渣打银行的义工，精神奕奕地与乐龄活动中心的大约70名年长者交谈和玩游戏，使那里的气氛变得非常特别。在游戏中有人赢得满分时，在场的义工们就会情不自禁地发出“Bingo!!”的欢呼声。　

领导大家捞鱼生最后一声“Bingo!”欢呼声过后不久，李总理也莅临同我们打招呼。在颁发奖品给5位幸运抽奖得主后，李总理接着为中心主持开幕，然后领导我们捞鱼生。摄影爱好者则忙着捕捉精彩的镜头。

我们的新中心从星期一至星期五，上午9时至下午5时，为年长者服务，项目包括运动、游戏、健康讲座等。

we’ve held open auditions at the foyer of the Anchorvale CC. Twelve aspiring young artists have been shortlisted for the grand finale to be held on 20 April, when they’ll compete for the top prize of a thousand dollars. Police cameras in every block by 2016

The Police plan to install CCTV cameras (right) to cover key loca-

tions in all 10,000 HDB blocks and multi-storey car parks.

It’s part of their new Community Policing System.

While these cameras will not be monitored ‘live’, they can deter crime and the images that they record can assist in solving crime. Footage is recorded continuously, with new images overwriting older footage on a monthly basis.

The installation of cameras island-wide will be done in phases, with Yio Chu Kang being one of the first to get them. In fact, Blocks 641 to 649 already have them.

The cameras are installed at public spaces in the blocks, such as lift lobbies and stair-wells, as well as at points of entry and exit to multi-storey carparks. A blue-and-white sign (right) is set up near each camera.

For the convenience of residents, the Police have arranged that instal-lation of cameras within a block is completed in one day!

On the evening of 28 January, Mr Ang Hin Kee led several

teams, made up of Cheng San-Seletar C2E members and staff from the SCDF and Town Council, on a walkabout at Blocks 596A and B, Ang Mo Kio St 53,

Whenever they were able to talk to residents, they stressed the fire dangers of corridor clutter.

This was their checklist:Don’t place cardboard boxes, wooden furniture or any other combustibles along the corridor.DO call the Town Council if you have bulky items to get rid of. The disposal service is free.Don’t obstruct access to fire hose reels or fire extinguishers.DO keep hose reel cabinets and fire extinguishers clear.Don’t store things on passageways that are the escape route from your home.DO maintain a minimum clear escape passage of 1.2 m from the parapet wall.Don’t store things in the cupboards that house dry risers, power or telephone lines, gas pipes or hose reels.DO ensure that these utilities closets are free from obstruction at all times.Don’t use staircases as rest areas or storage space.DO keep staircases free of obstruction at all times.Don’t burn joss sticks, oil, incense paper and other offerings used in religious ceremonies along the corridor.DO use joss sticks, lamps and candles that are electrically operated.

From the 15 January, the smoking ban was extended to include more public spaces:

Common areas of all residential buildings

Covered walkways and overhead pedestrian bridges

Within 5 metres of bus shelters

Since 15 January 2013, more public areas have gone smoke-free to further limit the exposure

of the public to the harmful effects of second-hand tobacco smoke. The 5 areas are:

i. Common areas of all residential buildingsii. Covered linkways and walkwaysiii. Overhead pedestrian bridgesiv. Within 5-metre radius of bus shelters [smoking at bus stops not allowed from October 2005]v. Hospital outdoor compounds [smoking inside hospital buildings not allowed from July 1988]

There has been broad public support for extending the smoking prohibition to more places. A November 2011 public consultation exercise, conducted to gather feedback on smoking prohibition revealed that 89% of respondents were supportive of extend-ing smoking prohibition to cover more public places. The public areas included in this latest extension were among the top places that respondents had indicated support for smoking to be curbed.

NEA will take an advisory approach in the first three months of the roll-out where those caught smoking in the new areas will receive warnings. This is to allow members of the public time to adjust to the extension. However, smokers who repeatedly flout the law in spite of warnings given can be issued a fine of up to $1,000.

Alongside an extensive publicity campaign on national media like radio channels and newspapers, NEA has been working alongside key stakeholders to communicate the changes to the public. The display of educational posters, signage and the relocation or replacement of bins with ashtrays would be among the steps taken to heighten awareness. While grassroots organisations and students from tertiary institutions are reaching out to smokers in their estates, selected Cheers and 7-Eleven outlets with

high cigarette sales helped by distributing collaterals to customers.

Cleaner air is the responsibility of all Singaporeans hence both smokers and non-smokers play important roles to ensure the effective implementation of the smoking prohibition extension. Cleaner air will not just benefit members of the community who are non-smokers but smokers as well. In this way, NEA hopes to enlist the support of all Singaporeans and work with the community to create more smoke-free places.

Facts:Tobacco use is the single largest cause of prevent-able death in the world. It is also a key risk factor for cancer, heart diseases, stroke and chronic obstruc-tive pulmonary diseases (COPD), the top causes of death among Singaporeans. There is no safe level of exposure to second-hand smoke, which contributes to a range of serious and often fatal diseases, includ-ing heart disease, respiratory illness and lung and other cancers. With the majority (86%) of Singapore’s adult population being non-smokers, there is a need to enhance the protection of public from the harmful effects of second-hand smoke.

The Smoking (Prohibition in Certain Places) Act administered by NEA is part of the national effort to promote a smoke-free lifestyle in Singapore. NEA has been gradually expanding the list of smoke-free places covered under the Act in consultation with the public and relevant stakeholders.

Jerry Griffis is a long-time resident who came here from Georgia.

“I like hot food”, he says – a taste he shares with many others from the Southern States. Last May this ex-aerospaceman, who has lived on the old Seletar airbase for 30 years now, opened his seventh eatery. “Cooking is my hobby. Always has been.” He’ll be 80 this year.

His current outlet is at 259 Jalan Kayu, but his first was right inside the old airbase. “Everybody liked it. I could park 300 cars there! New cus-tomers would drive around for hours trying to find the place, of course.”

When he had to close that restau-rant, he opened another off-base, then sold it. It’s something he has done quite a few times since. “Selling the business is the best way to get a holiday.” He and his wife April – who also cooks – run a very hands-on, laid-back, just-a-bunch-of-friends-having-a-meal-together operation. They’re there every day.

Hottest in TownTheir Buffalo wings have become famous as the hottest in town. These wings are deep-fried chicken wings, tumbled in a hot sauce, first served in Buffalo, upstate New York. “We started with hot, hotter and hottest,

levels one, two

and three. People asked for hotter still, so we went up to level 10.”

We sampled level 5, just to see. Well actually, you sample buffalo wings to feel. The heat hits pretty well every bit of you from your scalp to the bottom of your lungs, leaving you more or less senseless. Except for an all-encompassing sense of HOT!

Jerry assured us that the afterburn would last about 30 minutes and, you know, he was right! We’ll try level 6 next time.

Besides the wings, the Sunset Grill serves a range of Western dishes, from pasta to pork chops. Jerry advised us to eat our main meal first, as most of his customers found the wings tended to temporarily anaes-

thetise their taste buds.The servings were gener-

ous. The ingredients were fresh. The flavours were good. “We use no MSG in our kitchen.”

The main dishes were priced around $20 a plate, the wings at $18.70 for 6, $30 for 12. At level 1. They go up $1 per dozen per

level. “The extra chilli is expen-sive!” So level 10 costs $40 per dozen and level 35, $65.00.

Yes there is a level 35. But the chef will give you a

certificate if you can eat a wing at level 30!
