IMPORTANT SAFETYINSTRUCTIONSREAD BEFORE OPERATING EQUIPMENT

This product was designed and manufactured to meet strict quality andsafety standards. There are, however, some installation and operationprecautions which you should be particularly aware of.

1. Read Instructions - All the safety and operating instructionsshould be read before the appliance is operated.

2. Retain Instructions-The safety and operating instructions shouldbe retained for future reference.

3. Heed Warnings-All warnings on the appliance and in theoperating instructions should be adhered to.

4. Follow Instructions-All operating and use instructions should befollowed.

5. Cleaning-Unplug this video product from the wall outlet beforecleaning. Do not use liquid cleaners or aerosol cleaners. Use adamp cloth for cleaning.

6. Attachments-Do not use attachments not recommended by thevideo product manufacturer as they may cause hazards.

7. Water and Moisture-Do not use this video product near water-forexample, near a bath tub, wash bowl, kitchen sink, or laundry tub,in a wet basement, or near a swimming pool, and the like.

8. Accessories-Do not place this video product on an unstable cart,stand, tripod, bracket, or table. The video product may fall,causing serious injury to a child or adult, and serious damage tothe appliance. Use only with a cart, stand, tripod, bracket, or tablerecommended by the manufacturer, or sold with the videoproduct. Any mounting of the appliance should follow themanufacturer’s instructions, and should use a mountingaccessory recommended by the manufacturer.

9. Ventilation-Slots and openings in the cabinet are provided forventilation and to ensure reliable operation of the video productand to protect it from overheating, and these openings must not beblocked or covered. The openings should never be blocked byplacing the video product on a bed, sofa, rug, or other similarsurface. This video product should never be placed near or over aradiator or heat register. This video product should not be placedin a built-in installation such as a bookcase or rack unless properventilation is provided or the manufacturer’s instructions havebeen adhered to.

10. Power Sources-This video product should be operated only fromthe type of power source indicated on the marking label. If you arenot sure of the type of power supply to your home, consult yourappliance dealer or local power company. For video productsintended to operate from battery power, or other sources, refer tothe operating instructions.

11. Grounding or Polarization-This video product is equipped with apolarized alternating-current line plug (a plug having one bladewider than the other). This plug will fit into the power outlet onlyone way. This is a safety feature. If you are unable to insert theplug fully into the outlet, try reversing the plug. If the plug shouldstill fail to fit, contact your electrician to replace your obsoleteoutlet. Do not defeat the safety purpose of the polarized plug.

12. Power-Cord Protection-Power-supply cords should be routed sothat they are not likely to be walked on or pinched by items placedupon or against them, paying particular attention to cords at plugs,convenience receptacles, and the point where they exit from theappliance.

13. Protective Attachment Plug - The appliance is equipped with anattachment plug having overload protection. This is a safetyfeature. See Instruction Manual for replacement or resetting ofprotective device. If replacement of the plug is required, be surethe service technician has used a replacement plug specified bythe manufacturer that has the same overload protection as theoriginal plug.

14. Outdoor Antenna Grounding-If an outside antenna or cablesystem is connected to the video product, be sure the antenna orcable system is grounded so as to provide some protectionagainst voltage surges and built up static charges. Section 810 ofthe National Electrical Code, ANSI/NFPA No. 70-1984, providesinformation with respect to proper grounding of the mast andsupporting structure, grounding of the lead-in wire to an antennadischarge unit, size of grounding conductors, location of antenna-discharge unit, connection to grounding electrodes, andrequirements for the grounding electrode. See Figure 1.

15. Lightning-For added protection for this video product receiverduring a lightning storm, or when it is left un-attended and unusedfor long periods of time, unplug it from the wall outlet anddisconnect the antenna or cable system. This will prevent damageto the video product due to lightning and power-line surges.

16. Power Lines-An outside antenna system should not be located inthe vicinity of overhead power lines or other electric light or powercircuits, or where it can fall into such power lines or circuits. Wheninstalling an outside antenna system, extreme care should betaken to keep from touching such power lines or circuits as contactwith them might be fatal.

17. Overloading-Do not overload wall outlets and extension cords asthis can result in a risk of fire or electric shock.

18. Object and Liquid Entry-Never push objects of any kind into thisvideo product through openings as they may touch dangerousvoltage points or short-out parts that could result in a fire orelectric shock. Never spill liquid of any kind on the video product.

19. Servicing-Do not attempt to service this video product yourselfas opening or removing covers may expose you to dangerousvoltage or other hazards. Refer all servicing to qualified servicepersonnel.

20. Damage Requiring Service-Unplug this video product from thewall outlet and refer servicing to qualified service personnelunder the following conditions:

a. When the power-supply cord or plug is damaged.

b. If liquid has been spilled, or objects have fallen into the videoproduct.

c. If the video product has been exposed to rain or water.

d. If the video product does not operate normally by following theoperating instructions. Adjust only those controls that arecovered by the operating instructions as an improperadjustment of other controls may result in damage and will oftenrequire extensive work by a qualified technician to restore thevideo product to its normal operation.

e. If the video product has been dropped or the cabinet has beendamaged.

f. When the video product exhibits a distinct change inperformance-this indicates a need for service.

21. Replacement Parts-When replacement parts are required, besure the service technician has used replacement parts specifiedby the manufacturer or have the same characteristics as theoriginal part. Unauthorized substitutions may result in fire, electricshock or other hazards.

22. Safety Check-Upon completion of any service or repairs to thisvideo product, ask the service technician to perform safety checksto determine that the video product is in proper operatingcondition.

23. Carts and Stands-The appliance should be used only with a cartor stand that is recommended by the manufacturer.

24. An appliance and cart combination should be moved with care.Quick stops, excessive force, and uneven surfaces may cause theappliance and cart combination to overturn.

GENERAL INFORMATION

This receiver is supplied including:– a remote control– 2 batteries for the remote control, size AA– a loop antenna– a wire antenna– this instruction booklet

Clean the receiver with a soft, slightly dampened, lint-freecloth. Do not use any cleaningagents as they may have acorrosive effect.

Do not expose the receiver to humidity, rain, sand orexcessive heat (caused byheating equipment or directsunlight).

If you have stacked the components of your system, thereceiver must be on top. Place the receiver on a flat, hard,stabile surface. Do not cover any vents and leave 50 cmabove and 10 cm left and right of the receiver free forventilation.

For good reception the loop antenna should not be placed ontop of, or beneath VCRs, CD recorders, DVD players, TVsand other radiation sources.

All redundant packing material has been omitted. We havedone our utmost to make the packaging easily separable intothree mono materials: cardboard (box), polystyrene foam(buffer) and polyethylene (bags, protective foam sheet).

Your set consists of materials which can be recycled ifdisassembled by a specialized company. Please observe thelocal regulations regarding the disposal of packing materials,exhausted batteries and old equipment.

REMOTE CONTROL

Open the battery compartment of the remote controland insert 2 alkaline batteries, typeAAAA (R06, UM-3).

Remove batteries if they are flat orif the remote control is not going tobe used for a long time.

Batteries contain chemical substances, so they shouldbe disposed of properly.

The buttons on the remote control work the same way as thecorresponding ones on the receiver.

Important!You have to press a source button for longer than 2 secondsto switch the sound source on the receiver. Pressing a sourcebutton for less than 2 seconds will only switch the remotecontrol to use the commands for the selected product.

The remote control remains tuned to the selected source untilanother source button on the remote control is pressed.This enables you to operate additional sources (i. e. windinga tape) without changing the source on the receiver.

REMOTE CONTROL

You can identify the universal remote control by theinscription Multibrand / Universal.

The universal remote control must be programmed to use thecodes for your appliances of different brands. This is done bykeying in a 4-digit code or by scanning the codes until thecorrect one is found. We recommend to using the 4-digitcode. This method is faster and more reliable. The codescanning method should be used only if you cannot find thecode for one of your appliances. The codes are listed at theend of this book.

Important!Use the remote control buttons for programming, not thebuttons of the receiver or other appliances.

Programming with the 4-digit code1 Keep the source button for the appliance which should be

controlled and pressed for 3 seconds.

2 Key in the 4-digit code for the appliance (codetable at theend of the booklet).

Notes: – If more than 4 digits are entered, the remotecontrol will recognize only the ones keyed in first.

– If you do not key in a code within 30 seconds theremote control will switch off the programmingfunction without changing the code.

– To program a new appliance, simply overwrite theold code by entering a new one.

Scanning the codetable1 Switch on the appliance which should be controlled.

2 Keep the source button for the appliance which should becontrolled and pressed for 3 seconds.

3 Press and release again.→ The remote control sends the codes for channel up or

standby (depending on the selected source) for onebrand after the other.

4 As soon as the appliance reacts – switches to the nextchannel or to standby – press to confirm the code.→ The identified code will be used.

• If the set does not react within 2 minutes, the code for thisappliance is not stored in the remote control. The code ofthe remote control will remain unchanged.

Note: When taking out the batteries of the remote control formore than 1 minute the codes must be reprogrammed.

CONNECTIONS

The type plate is located on the rear of the receiver.

1 Check whether the mains voltage as shown on the typeplate corresponds to your local mains voltage. If it does not,consult your dealer or service organization.

2 Connect the mains cable to the wall socket.

To disconnect the set from the mains completely, remove themains plug from the wall socket.

Some of the speaker connections on the receiver are screwconnectors and some are click-fit connectors. Use them asshown below.

1 Always connect the coloured (or marked) wire to the redterminal and the black (or unmarked) wire to the blackterminal.

2 Connect:– Left front speaker to L– Right front speaker to R– Center speaker to CENTER – Left surround speaker to SURROUND L– Right surround speaker to SURROUND R

AM antennaThe loop antenna supplied is for indoor use only. Position theantenna as far away as possible from the receiver, the TV,the cables, a DVD player, a VCR and other radiation sources.

1 Fit the plug of the frame antenna to AM LOOP as shownbelow.

2 Turn the antenna for optimum reception.

FM antennaThe wire antenna supplied can only be used to receivenearby stations. For better reception we recommend using acable antenna system or an outdoor antenna.

1 Open the FM 300 Ω click-fits by pushing the lever down asshown below.

2 Insert each wire of the antenna into one hole.

3 Close the click-fits using the lever.

4 Move the antenna in different positions for optimumreception.

SYSTEM SETUP

General hints for positioningAvoid positioning the speakers in a corner or on the floor asthis will boost the bass tones too much. Placing the speakersbehind curtains, furniture, etc. will reduce the treble response.The listener should always be able to ”see” the speakers.

Each room has different acoustic characteristics and thepositioning possibilities are often limited. You can find thebest position for your speakers by referring to the pictureabove.

As a minimum we recommend 5 speakers (2 front, a center,2 surround) for good surround sound. It is possible toreproduce some kind of surround sound with fewer speakers.This is done by redirecting the signals which are foreseen forthe missing speakers to the existing ones. See “Menus” onhow to set up the receiver correctly for the number and sizeof the speakers used.

Positioning the front speakersThe front speakers should be placed right and left in front ofthe listening position like usual stereo speakers.

Positioning the center speakerThe center speaker should be placed in the center betweenthe two front speakers, e. g. underneath or on top of the TV.The best height for the center speaker is the height of thelistener’s ears (while seated).

Positioning the surround speakersThe surround speakers should face each other and be in linewith, or slightly behind the listener.

Positioning the subwooferA subwoofer can be used to enhance the bass performanceof your system dramatically. The subwoofer can be positionedanywhere in the room, because it is not possible to locate thesource of deep tones. Nevertheless, you should not place thesubwoofer in the middle of a room, since the bass could beseverely weakened. Do not place any object on thesubwoofer.

The relative volume of the speakers must be adjusted foroptimal surround sound. You should be at your usual listeningposition when adjusting the speaker volume. See “Receivermenus” on how to set up the receiver for the used speakers.

1 Press POWER ON / OFF to switch on the receiver.

2 Press TEST TONE on the remote control.→ A test tone coming from the different speakers, except

the subwoofer, is heard.

3 Press +/- REAR on the remote control toincrease/decrease the volume of the actual speaker. Thebest result is achieved when all speakers have equalvolume in the listening position.

4 Press TEST TONE on the remote control.→ The test tone stops.

Note: If you are not completely satisfied with the volumesettings, we recommend making minor adjustments tothem during surround sound playback.

If the receiver is used at very high power, it can producedistortions which may seriously damage your speakers.If distortions occur, reduce the volume and the tone controlsto a level where the sound is acceptable again.

To avoid overheating of the set a safety circuit has beenbuilt in. Therefore your set may disconnect underextreme conditions. If this happens, switch the set offand let it cool down before reusing it.

Connecting headphones to PHONES will switch off thespeakers. The receiver switches to and surroundsound will be reduced to a stereo signal which is reproducibleby standard headphones.

Disconnecting the headphones switches on the speakersagain. If you wish to enjoy surround sound again, switch thereceiver back to surround sound.

A rectangle with a letter in it shows that a speaker has beenselected in the setup menu. However, the subwoofer indicatorwill only light when a subwoofer signal is available. If only aletter is shown, this speaker is not used and its sound isreproduced by the other speakers.

When selecting a source by turning INPUT SELECTOR,the audio and video inputs with the corresponding name areactivated. The incoming signal is reproduced by all audio and– if the source includes a video signal – video outputs of thereceiver.

2 Prepare the desired recording appliance. It must beconnected to one of the outputs of the receiver.

3 Start recording on the recording appliance.

4 Start the playback of the source as usual.

Notes: – The audio and video signal of VCR IN is notreproduced by VCR OUT. The same applies tothe audio signal of CDR/TAPE IN to CDR/TAPEOUT.

– We recommend not to use the digital outputCOAX OUT of the receiver to record from ananalogue source. Use the analogue outputCDR/TAPE instead.

It is possible to connect a digital recorder to the digital output ofthe receiver. In this way, all signals coming from the digitalinputs can be recorded directly on the connected audiorecorder. The receiver will also convert all signals coming fromthe analogue inputs to the digital output.

The receiver can be used to record digitally a multichannelsurround sound audio signal (Dolby Digital) from, for example,DVD to CD-R. The receiver will convert the digital multichannelsignal into a stereo signal without loss of relevant soundinformation.

Notes: – Do not use the 3D SURROUND feature whilemaking digital recordings as this will distort thedigital audio signal.

– When recording a Dolby Digital signal, each trackmust be recorded individually.

SURROUND SOUND

Surround sound gives you a complete new listeningsensation. You will have the feeling of being in the middle ofthe action, because sound is coming from everywhere aroundyou. Look out for TV broadcasts, audio and video tapes anddiscs with the 3 or 1 marks which areencoded for multichannel surround sound. You should preferDolby Digital to get the best out of your receiver.

Notice that DVDs do not always carry full multichannelsurround. To be sure that a disc is multichannel encodedconsult your dealer.

Most ordinary stereo tapes and discs can be replayed usingsurround sound settings with good results. If the reproductionis distorted in surround mode, switch to normal stereo mode.

The availabilty of the various surround sound modesdescribed depends on the number of speakers used and theincoming sound information.

With surround sound on, you can switch through the differentsurround modes. Note that the possibilities are related tospeaker setup defined in the receivers menu.

If a digital surround signal is detected, the receiver will scrolleither .

1 Press SURROUND ON/OFF to switch on the surroundsound.→ The surround mode in use is scrolled.

2 Press SURR. MODE repeatedly to listen to the differentsurround modes (if available).→ The chosen mode and the speakers used are

displayed. If the incoming multichannel signals arereduced to fewer output signals, DDOOWWNNMMIIXX is displayed.

3 Press 3D SURROUND to switch virtual 3D surround eitheron or off.→ A light indicates if virtual 3D surround is on.

4 Press SURROUND ON/OFF to switch off the surroundsound.→ is scrolled.

The sound reproduction is enhanced and a slight echo isadded. This gives the impression of being in a large room.Can only be used in stereo mode.

The surround mode enables normal surround soundreproduction with 4 or 5 speakers. Depending on the sourcematerial, Dolby Surround Pro Logic, Dolby Digital is reproduced.

,In addition to , the surround mode used –depending on the source material – will be displayed. In caseof digital surround, the sound format AC-3 (for Dolby Digital) willbe displayed, followed by the sound channels, available on thesource (e. g. DVD).

Example: Dolby Digital, 3 front channels,2 surround channels and asubwoofer channel.Dolby Digital, 3 front channels, 1(mono) surround channel withoutsubwoofer signal.

The surround sound is muted. 3 Stereo lets you listen tosurround sound without using the surround speakers.

The sound of the rear channel is simulated by the frontspeakers. Surround sound is simulated through the front left,right and center speakers. The position of the listenerinfluences the surround effect. The area where the effect isbest is shown in grey.

All sound is reproduced and played through the front left andright speakers. This enables standard stereo reproduction.

NIGHT MODE (only on the remote control)The loud parts of the sound are lowered and the softpassages are raised. You can enjoy surround sound withoutdisturbing sleeping children or neighbours. Night mode onlyworks with Dolby Digital, and only if supported by the sourcematerial.

TUNER

You can search for radio stations by scanning the frequencyband. You can also key in the frequency of a known radiostation. If an FM station is being broadcast and received instereo, STEREO is shown.

Searching for radio stations1 Turn INPUT SELECTOR to select the tuner.

2 Select a waveband by pressing BAND repeatedly.→ The selected waveband is displayed.

3 Keep or pressed for approximately 1 second.→ is displayed and the tuner tunes to a station

with sufficient strength.

Note: While searching for radio stations, the actual sensitivityis displayed. In this case, SENS LO means the tuner isonly looking for radio stations with a strong signal.

You may store up to 30 radio stations in the memory. Thereceiver can select and program radio stations by itself or youcan choose them yourself.

Automatic programming1 Choose from the menu and press NEXT .

2 Choose and press NEXT .→ The preset number where programming will start, the

waveband and are displayed.

3 Turn TUNER PRESET to change the preset number whereprogramming should start.

4 Use BAND to switch to the desired waveband.

5 Press ENTER / OK to start programming.→ flashes and all available radiostations are programmed, this may take a few minutes.Programming is done when stopsflashing.

Manual programming1 Choose from the menu and press NEXT .

2 Choose and press NEXT .→ A preset number, the waveband and the frequency are
