CRITERION I – CURRICULAR ASPECTS

1.1 Curriculum Planning and Implementation

1.1.1 Institution has the mechanism for well-planned curriculum delivery and documentation.

Explain in 500 words

Institution efficiently plans and monitors the activities for the effective implementation of the

curriculum. Every faculty member gives choices of the subjects for the new semester as per their

expertise. Academic planner and departmental calendar is prepared from the calendar published by the

University. Theory and practical teaching plans, course files, lab manuals, question bank with

explanations, assignments are prepared by the faculty members before start of new semester along

with other teaching material including content beyond syllabus, virtual lab experiments etc. are shared

with all the students by the respective subject teacher on Google Apps.

Academic monitoring committee continuously monitors the schedule of classes, practical‟s and

tutorials through daily attendance. Institution has provided all class rooms with LCD projector and

internet access. NPTEL videos, contents from online courses and webinars are used by faculty

members for effective curriculum delivery. Each department assigns teacher guardians to all the

students in a batch of 20 students. They regularly take feedback from students and try to solve their

problems by counselling them and keeping record of the university examination marks and extra-

curricular activities in a booklet.

Each department regularly evaluates the students through continuous assessment system such as

offline and online (MyExamo for First and Second year students) class test, mock practical/orals,

assignments, tutorials, surprise tests, quizzes, group discussions etc. Subject teacher monitors the

performance of each student and conducts remedial classes for further improvement.

Interdepartmental and departmental academic coordinators conduct the academic audit of faculty

members thrice in a semester and submit the report to the HODs, Dean Academics and Principal for

corrective actions. Institution has formed various functional committees to focus on specific areas

such as academic monitoring, time table, theory, practical & unit test examinations, technical events

and so on. Performance and attendance of all the students is regularly communicated to parents

through teacher guardian by telephonic conversation, SMS and through e-mail communications.

Institution encourages and sponsors faculty members to organize and attend faculty development

programs (FDPs) for enriching their subject knowledge and to enhance the interaction among the peer

group. Faculty members visit industries related to their subject to gain knowledge of the latest

development carried out in the respective domains as a part of Industry Institute Interaction through

Corporate Relations Division (CRD). Each department has allotted two hours sessions per week in the

class time table for enhancement of employability skills through CRD. To improve the employability

skills of the students, every department in the Institution conducts various short term certification and

add-on courses like C, C++ Programming, Data Structures, CATIA, CCNA, IoT, Basics of JAVA,

Geometric Dimensioning &Tolerance (GD&T) etc. Institution has various student chapters such as

SAEINDIA, ISHRAE, ASHRAE, IETE, ACM, CSI, ISACA, ISTE, IE (I) etc. to keep the pace with

the research and recent advancements in the specific domains.

Library is kept open for all the students after the Institution hours. During examination period, the

reading hall is kept open for 24 hours including Sundays.

2.3.2 Students mentoring system available in the institution? Give details. (maximum 500 words)

It was observed that, in order to improve performance of the students with respect to their

attendance, results and participation in various activities, there is a close association between

teachers and students. In addition, some of the students need personal guidance and counseling. The

Institution follows a student‟s mentoring system through teacher guardian scheme wherein the

academic and personal issues of the students are looked after. The Teacher Guardian scheme is

developed to closely monitor every student‟s academic performance and ensure that his/her

performance improves. TG scheme also ensures that parents are regularly updated about their

ward‟s progress.

The Institution has also appointed professional counselors to address the personal, psycho-social

and other problems of the students. The Corporate Relations Division Cell of the Institution assists

the students by conducting trainings, seminars and workshops for their overall grooming thereby

making them eligible for better placement opportunities. The Institution provides fee waiver facility

to economically weaker students in order to support them to continue their education. Various

committees are in place to motivate and encourage the students to participate in competitions at

different levels.

2.5.2 Reforms initiated on Continuous Internal Evaluation(CIE) system at the institutional level (250

words)

Various evaluation reforms initiated by the University that are adopted by the Institution are as

AQAR 2017-18

Marathwada Mitra Mandal‟s College of Engineering, Pune Page 23

follows:

Online exams for first and second year students, In-Semester exam for third and final

year students, Practical, oral, TW & theory exams at the end of the semester as per

the University schedule and time table

As per the requirement of the University, the Institution has deputed approved faculty

at the post of College Examination Officer (CEO) for better co-ordination among the

Institution and the varsity for various University exams

Paperless submission of marks i.e. online submission of TW, practical/oral marks to

the University

The Institution has adopted credit based system for UG & PG programmes, Online

appointment of internal examiners for TW, practical/oral, In-semester exams etc.

In addition to this, various evaluation reforms initiated by the Institution on its own are:

Prelim examination for FE students

Mock online examination

Unit test

Mock practical/oral examinations

Project, seminar reviews

Technical and aptitude skills assessment using pariksha.co portal

Institution encourages students to use reputed research papers for seminars and

projects to inculcate research culture among students

2.5.3 Academic calendar prepared and adhered for conduct of Examination and other related matters

(250 words)

At the beginning of each academic year, the affiliating university (SPPU) provides guidelines about

the academic schedule of the semester which includes the dates of commencement and end of the

semester, schedule of examinations, etc. Accordingly, the Academic Monitoring Committee, Dean

Academics after taking suggestions from Principal prepares an academic planner for the institution

in the beginning of a semester.

After approval of the academic planner, the respective department prepares an academic calendar of

the department. It includes a schedule for unit tests, term end exam, technical events, guest lectures,

parents meet, co-curricular and extra co-curricular activities of the department.

Academic calendar of each department is displayed on the institution website and also circulated

among the faculties and students. In concurrence with the academic calendar, mock online tests are

conducted for the first year and second year engineering students to practice university online

examinations. Unit tests are conducted for the third and fourth year engineering students to practice

for university in-sem theory examinations.

The record of a continuous assessment is maintained by the subject teacher and performance of

students is evaluated at the end of a semester. A periodic review of the progress of the syllabus is

taken and extra hours are added in time table to meet the academic deadlines.

AQAR 2017-18

Marathwada Mitra Mandal‟s College of Engineering, Pune Page 24

The institution faces some problems in following the academic calendar due to late admission of

direct second year students. In such cases academic monitoring committee forms a new class or

schedules extra lectures to cover the syllabus in due course of time.

Periodic audits are taken to review the syllabus coverage and related academic activities. The

HODs, in turn, organizes departmental meetings and initiate the required steps for syllabus

completion.

Faculties prepare teaching plan and session plan according to curriculum of SPPU. The staff

members adhere to teaching plan and deliver the lectures according to methodologies decided in the

plan. Continuous internal evaluation is carried out during practical sessions and to have one-to-one

interaction with students. Regular review is conducted by faculties to monitor the progress of

syllabus coverage.
