March 10, 2012 (WEEK 1, MLS Game #3) 7:30 p.m. ET (CSN-MA+; KSMO)

D.C. United and Sporting Kansas City ended the 2011 regular season against each other – and the Eastern Conference foes meet once again, this time to kick off the 2012 campaign. For United, that season finale came just after seeing their playoff hopes dashed for a fourth consecutive year. Sporting ended the 2011 season atop the Eastern Conference and were 90 minutes from reaching MLS Cup, before falling in the conference final on their home ground. REFEREE: Mark Geiger. D.C. UNITED D.C. United are looking to return to the MLS Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2007 – the longest postseason drought in the storied club’s history – when Ben Olsen begins his second full season in charge. United were pipped from a playoff spot in the season’s final week last year, finishing in seventh place in the Eastern Conference.

While the preseason finale against the Columbus Crew in the Carolina Challenge Cup was cancelled because of inclement weather in Charleston, S.C., United claimed the “Coffee Pot Cup” – emblematic of the preseason tournament championship – for a third consecutive year.

United defeated the USL Pro League Charleston Battery 3-1 in their eventual final match, behind goals from Maicon Santos, Ryan Richter and Hamdi Salihi.

Here’s the United team: Joe Willis (Andrew Dykstra 61'); Chris Korb, Brandon McDonald (Dejan Jakovic 46'), Emiliano Dudar (Ethan White 46'), José Burciaga [trialist] (Andy Najar 46'); Danny Cruz (Daniel Woolard 78'), Branko Boskovic (Stephen King 46'), Lance Rozeboom [trialist] (Conor Shanosky 61'), Nick DeLeon (Chris Pontius 71'); Ryan Richter [trialist] (Josh Wolff 61'), Maicon Santos (Hamdi Salihi 71')

To open the tournament, United defeated the Chicago Fire 1-0, with Salihi scoring the only goal. Here’s the United team: Joe Willis; Robbie Russell (Chris Korb 78'), Brandon McDonald (Ethan White 46'),

Dejan Jakovic (Emiliano Dudar 46'), Daniel Woolard (Guilherme [trialist 75']); Andy Najar (Danny Cruz 78'), Stephen King (Ryan Richter [trialist] 88'), Marcelo Saragosa (Lance Rozeboom 46'), Chris Pontius (Nick DeLeon 71'); Dwayne DeRosario (Conor Shanosky 58'), Hamdi Salihi (Maicon Santos 68')

Salihi, an Albanian international, was signed by the club just before heading to South Carolina and scored goals in each of his appearances.

"He's a thinker," said fellow forward Josh Wolff. "He's constantly moving and scheming around the backs. He's not a big guy but he uses his space very well. His timing is impeccable." Added strike partner Dwayne De Rosario: "He's a very smart player. He's dangerous in the box. He makes good runs, timely runs, and he reads the game really well."

United are also hoping to have Designated Player Branko Boskovic back for the entire season. He suffered a torn ACL in his knee last April – an injury he says is completely healthy.

“I feel good, I feel alive. I love the team. I think there are some very good players. I’m very happy to be with this group,” Boskovic said. “ … I missed a couple of days in Arizona and I need to work a lot on my fitness. I will see how long I can play and for how many minutes. Still, I don’t know. But for the first game, I will be ready.”

The final match cancellation also robbed United head coach Ben Olsen with the opportunity to see his first-choice XI together. Goalkeeper Bill Hamid and holding midfielder Perry Kitchen missed the first two matches in Charleston while on duty with the U.S. U-23 national team.

United thought they had lost a quality offseason pickup when midfielder Danny Cruz suffered an ankle injury in a tackle and had to be carted off in the match vs. host Charleston. But after initial indications were the injury was more serious, Cruz returned to training before the club returned home.

“It comes with the way that I play," Cruz said. "I expect it every game. If you look at the amount of times that I get fouled, it's a lot compared to my minutes. I'm getting hit a lot, so I'm used to getting hit."

In the opening season of their Livestrong Sporting Park home, SKC played host to the Eastern Conference Championship, but fell 2-0 to the Houston Dynamo.

Sporting concluded their preseason preparations in Florida with a 4-1 win against the U.S. U-17 national team last Thursday. Soony Saad scored the final two goals for K.C., which also got goals from Konrad Warzycha and Kyle Miller.

Here’s the Sporting team: Steve Spangler, Korede Aiyegbusi (Shawn Singh 46), Lawrence Olum, Cyprian Hedrick (Sacir Hot 46), Michael Harrington, Luke Sassano (Stefan Antonijevic 46), Mozzi Gyorio, Konrad Warzycha (Michael Thomas 46), Dom Dwyer, Soony Saad, Kevin Ellis (Kyle Miller 46)

The match came after three contests in the Disney Pro Soccer Challenge, where Sporting failed to advance out of the group phase after a 3-0 loss to Vancouver Whitecaps FC in the third game. The loss was the first of the preseason in six matches for K.C.

“It [loss vs. Vancouver] came at a great time,” SKC head coach Peter Vermes said. “It gets you 10 days right before the first game. Maybe you think things are going well and you deal with a little bit of adversity. … But our preparation has always been for D.C. And nothing else has changed.”

Here’s the Sporting team: Jon Kempin; Chance Myers, Aurelien Collin (Cyprian Hedrick 78), Matt Besler, Seth Sinovic; Julio Cesar (Luke Sassano 63), Paulo Nagamura (Mozzi Gyorio 73), Bobby Convey (Soony Saad 63); Jacob Peterson (Michael Harrington 83), C.J. Sapong (Dom Dwyer 69), Kei Kamara

Prior to that match, SKC played to a pair of draws against MLS clubs, 1-1 with Montréal Impact on Feb. 26 and 0-0 with Houston Dynamo on Feb. 24.

Coming out of preseason camp, the Sporting midfield is somewhat injury-hit. Holding midfielder Júlio César took part in limited training, while Paulo Nagamura and Graham Zusi – who won his first full U.S. cap and scored on his international debut – were held out of training.

“It’s nothing too bad,” said Zusi, suffering from right quadriceps tightness. “I just don’t want to make it any worse. It’s a little frustrating, because you always want to be out with the out with the guys and playing, especially leading up to the first game of the season, but I want to be as sharp and fit as possible.”

Bobby Convey, acquired from the San Jose Earthquakes, started in the midfield vs. Vancouver and played 63 minutes.

“We’ve got a ton of guys,” Vermes said. “[Luke] Sassano can play there, Konrad [Warzycha] can play there, [Michael] Thomas can play there. It’s not going to be hard to find someone to play that spot. Obviously, you always want to have everyone around,” Vermes added, “but I’ve always been of the belief that one man’s absence is another man’s opportunity.”

D.C. UNITED GAME NOTES

D.C. UNITED VS. SPORTING KANSAS CITY MARCH 10, 2012 | RFK STADIUM | 7:30 P.M. ET

By the numbers D.C. United’s all-time record in home openers is 7-5-4. The team has played Kansas City in its home opener on three occasions, putting together a record of 2-1. (W: ‘98, ’01, L: ’07). In last year’s home opener, 18,132 fans saw United best the Columbus Crew 3-1. 2011 newcomer Josh Wolff tallied the first goal of the season and Charlie Davies netted two to finish off the Crew. 2011 summary Coming off the worst season in club history (6-20-4 in 2010), D.C. United made major strides in 2011. The team increased its goal output from 21 in 2010 to 49 last season. The team was in the playoff race until the final week of the season and finished with a record of 9-13-12 (39 points). Injuries to Dejan Jakovic and Chris Pontius in the same week in September saw United finish the season 1-6-2 down the stretch without both in the lineup. Ultimately, it was largely the absence of those two players that saw United miss out on the post-season for the fourth year in a row. De Rosario wins MLS MVP Dwayne De Rosario’s 2011 season an usual one, to say the least. The 4-time MLS Cup winner started the season in Toronto, before being shipped to New York. After just a few weeks, D.C. United acquired him for Dax McCarty. DeRo was motivated and went on to score 13 goals in 18 games for DC. He led MLS with 16 goals, to go along with 12 assists en route to winning his first League MVP award. DeRo signed a long-term deal with United during the offseason and may very well finish his career in DC. Record-setting Kitchen United defender Perry Kitchen enters his sophomore season with veteran-like experience. Kitchen led the team in minutes played (2,726) last season, becoming the first rookie in United history to do so. The 19-year-old played in 31 MLS matches (30 starts), missing only three matches for international duty with the United States’ U-20s. In preparation for the 2012 Olympic Games, Kitchen was called into U.S. U-23 camp in Duisburg, Germany in November. The United midfielder was again called up to the U-23 team in February and started in the USA’s win against Mexico on 2/29/12.

Hamid earns first U.S. cap After several call-ups last year where he served as Tim Howard’s back-up, Hamid finally made his debut with the U.S. Men’s National Team, keeping a clean sheet to lead the team to a 1-0 victory over Venezuela in Glendale, Ariz. on 1/21. He became the ninth goalkeeper in U.S. history to record a shutout in his first appearance. Hamid posted another clean sheet with the U-23 team on 2/29, winning 2-0 against Mexico. The 21-year-old cemented himself as the Black-and-Red’s starting goalkeeper after starting 28 League games in 2011. In 2,392 minutes of action, Hamid compiled an overall MLS record of 7-9-10, posting 77 saves and a 1.39 goals-against-average mark. Salihi and Boskovic re-United Hamdi Salihi, who was most recently with Rapid Vienna of Austria's top division, signed with D.C. United last month and is already making an impact on the field. In three years with Rapid Vienna, he tallied a prolific 53 goals in 90 total matches (all competitions). The 4,000+ mile trip from Austria to Washington puts Salihi back on the same field with Branko Boskovic. The two played together for more than a year at Rapid Vienna. Salihi’s strike rate With 163 goals in 269 career professional games, Hamdi Salihi has shown an incredible prowess around the goal. In fact, there are only two players in Major League Soccer who have scored more career goals than Salihi – NY’s Thierry Henry (326) and LA’s Robbie Keane (188). Carolina Challenge Cup captured For the third year in a row, D.C. United put together the best record in the four-team tournament that takes place annually in Charleston, SC. United defeated the Chicago Fire and host Charleston Battery, before its final match versus Columbus was rained out. Seven-time participants in the tournament, United is 12-3-5 all-time. Boskovic’s return Signed as a Designated Player in July of 2010, D.C. United fans have still not had the opportunity to see a fully healthy Branko Boskovic. The midfielder showed glimpses of his ability–notching two second half goals in a U.S. Open Cup contest last April–but a

torn ACL in the same match ended his 2011 season. Now, fully recovered and approaching fitness, Head Coach Ben Olsen has tabbed Boskovic as an important piece for DC’s playoff aspirations. DeLeon drafted With the seventh overall selection in the 2012 MLS SuperDraft, D.C. United selected University of Louisville standout Nick DeLeon. The 21-year old midfielder impressed during preseason camps in Florida, Arizona, and South Carolina, and is expected to provide depth at outside midfield. DeLeon’s pace, grittiness, and ability to go forward along the flanks place him as a favorite to make immediate contributions, and likely one of the first players off the bench. Defensive depth While United dealt with a number of injury issues on the backline in 2011, the team’s defensive corps is largely healthy and also gained reinforcements during the offseason. The additions of Robbie Russell (acquired from Real Salt Lake) and Emiliano Dudar (signed from Switzerland) will complement the likes of Daniel Woolard (26 GP), Ethan White (24 GP), Brandon McDonald (18 GP), Dejan Jakovic (15 GP) and Chris Korb (12 GP).

Turning the page Following a fourth straight season without making the post-season, Head Coach Ben Olsen and the technical staff made the difficult decision to part ways with several club veterans. Santino Quaranta (10 seasons in DC), Clyde Simms (seven seasons), Devon McTavish (six seasons), and Marc Burch (five seasons) are no longer with the team, which makes Chris Pontius (drafted in 2009) as the longest-tenured player on the team. Shanosky loaned to Ft. Lauderdale On 3/2, United announced 20-year old Conor Shanosky would be loaned to the Ft. Lauderdale Strikers of the North American Soccer League. Shanosky was originally signed directly from D.C. United’s Academy on 8/6/10. His only first team appearance came last year in the team’s friendly versus AFC Ajax on 5/22. Impressive history D.C. United is the most successful professional soccer team in United States history. The club has won four MLS Cups (1996, 1997, 1999, 2004), four Supporters’ Shields for putting together the best regular season record (1997, 1999, 2006, 2007), two U.S. Open Cup titles (1996, 2008) and two international trophies – the CONCACAF Champions Cup and InterAmerican Cup, both in 1998

D.C. UNITED MINI BIOS

2 | DANNY CRUZ Cruz was traded to D.C. United in early 2012 from the Houston Dynamo, where he saw action in 20 matches, including 13 starts. Cruz is a gritty player who played a major role in the Dynamo’s road to the MLS Cup final, starting all four of the Dynamo playoff games. Last year Cruz netted two goals and assisted on three others. 3 | ROBBIE RUSSELL Russell is one of the few United players with an MLS Cup under his belt and will use his veteran experiences to help lead the back four. Russell enjoyed a successful 2011 season at Real Salt Lake, in which he started 22 of the 26 matches he played, netting two assists in 1,809 minutes of action. 4 | BRANDON McDONALD McDonald is a hard-nosed defender who joined D.C. United mid-season last year from the San Jose Earthquakes. Since joining United, McDonald started all 18 matches he played in and tallied a goal for United against the Vancouver Whitecaps. 5 | DEJAN JAKOVIC Jakovic, a native of Ontario, Canada, has started 56 of 57 games he has played in for the black-and-red. Jakovic is also becoming an integral part of the Canadian National Team. Jakovic was signed on 2/27/2009 from Red Star Belgrade of Serbia. 6 | KURT MORSINK Morsink joined United in 2009 when he was signed from the Kansas City Wizards and has now tallied over 1,600 minutes for the side. Morsink played college soccer for James Madison University and was a standout garnering honors in all four years of play. 7 | DWAYNE DE ROSARIO De Rosario is the reigning 2011 MLS MVP after an outstanding 2011 season that saw moves from Toronto to New York and from New York to his eventual landing spot in our nation’s capital. Preseason | After a short offseason, Sporting Kansas City pre-pared for the 2012 MLS season in two phases of preseason.

Phase one, Tucson, Arizona: In Tucson, Sporting KC played three matches, the first resulted in a 2-1 win over the San Jose Earthquakes at the Kino Sports Complex. It only took Chris Wondolowski and SJ three min-utes to earn the first tally of the contest. The goal came off a cross from Honduran winger Marvin Chavez. Sporting Kansas City was quick to respond, earning an equalizer just one minute later when Roger Espinoza slipped Kei Kamara through for the finish. Konrad Warzycha scored the game winner on a free kick from 25 yrds out. Next Sporting KC faced D.C. United. This time Sporting KC got on the board first with a Graham Zusi free kick in the 34th minute. However the game winner came in the 62nd minute. Ag-gressive defense from Dom Dwyer allowed Jacob Peterson to win a loose ball in SKC’s attacking third. The ball ultimately ricocheted to Soony Saad for the easy finish. Jose Burciaga, Jr. scored the lone goal for D.C. United off a deflected cross from Danny Cruz. SKC played Tucson in the final match of the first phase of preseason garnering a decisive 5-1 victory. Kei Kamara and Roger Espinoza started the scoring for SKC in the 18th and 40th minutes respectively; both goals unassisted. Tucson’s Redi Schmitt cut the lead in half with his goal in the 65th minute. Dwyer answered with a hat trick on assists from Shawn Singh in the 70th minute and Cyrus Saydee just seconds before the end of regulation.

Phase two, Orlando Florida: After a few days back in Kansas City, Sporting was off again, this time to Florida for the Disney Pro Soccer Classic in Or-lando. Sporting Kansas City battled the Houston Dynamo to a 0-0 draw in the first match of the tournament. In the second match, Sporting Kansas City faced expan-

sion team Montreal Impact and former Kansas City captain Davy Arnaud. The game concluded in a 1-1 draw with goals from Mon-treal’s Mike Fucito and Sporting Kansas City’s Soony Saad. Montreal struck first in the 37th minute when Andrew Wenger, the first overall pick in the 2012 MLS SuperDraft, slid a smooth pass across the penalty area for Fucito to bury in the back of the net. Sporting evened the score in the 70th minute when Mi-chael Thomas found Saad in front of the goal. Saad turned and placed the ball through the legs of Evan Bush and into the back of the net. Sporting’s final game of the Disney Pro Soccer Classic resulted in a 0-3 loss to Vancouver Whitecaps. The Whitecaps, Sebastian Le Toux opened the scoring in the 50th minute. Russell Teibert and Caryle Mitchell added the insurance in the 62nd and 67th minute respectively. Before returing to KC, Sporting competed once more, scrimmaging the United States Under-17 National Team, in which they posted a 4-1 victory.

Returning 11 starters from Conference Championship | SKC return all 11 starters from their 2011 playoff campaign. The youth movement the club has embraced over the last several seasons leaves just three players on the roster over the age of 30 (Diop, Nielsen, Cesar). The team’s average age in 2011 was 26.8, the youngest ever in the team’s 16-year history.

Nielsen named club captain | Jimmy Nielsen was named club captain for the 2012 campaign. Nielsen’s accolades include but are not limited too: 2010 All-Star, 2011 Team MVP, and best goals against average for a Sporting KC goalkeeper all-time.
