Early Assessment Program- EAPEssay Prompt –45 minutes timed writing

• Please Read with the Class:• The Early Assessment Program (EAP) is administered on behalf of the California Department of

Education and the California State University System to help students determine their readiness for college-level work. Students can earn an EXEMPTION from the CSU English and mathematics placement tests upon admission to CSU (San Diego State, Long Beach State, Cal State San Marcos, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Fresno State, San Francisco State, Cal State Dominguez Hills, etc. – all 23 campuses). This “placement” essay is also used by all the California Community College, such as Mesa, Miramar, San Diego City, Grossmont, Southwestern, etc. Frequently, students who are admitted to a CSU campus struggle with these placement exams and end up taking a level of English or math that does not earn them college credit, in order to meet a proficiency level required by the university. This is simply an early opportunity to avoid the placement tests for admission to CSU and Community Colleges! Also, if you are planning to take Expository Reading and Writing 1,2 next year as your senior English, you must complete this essay exam.

• To participate in EAP for exemption for English, students must respond to the additional 15 questions at the end of the ELA CST in April AND complete the following 45 minute essay prompt. Today you will be completing the essay. Each student has a pre-bar-coded response booklet and an essay prompt (3 different versions of the prompt are possible). All Madison students will be ready to apply to four year colleges upon graduation, so the entire Class of 2014 will take the essay portion of the test today.

Senior Exhibition Preparation

• This activity is designed to pre plan and to create a rough draft of your senior exhibition visual presentation.

• Your 10 –15 minute presentation must focus on your High School involvement in one of the following areas:– Designing a product, service or system (think Robotics,

SOTA, DATA , community service)– Improvement of a system (think yearbook, ASB, Key Club)– Planning or organizing an event or activity (think group

project, ASB, School Clubs, Sports, Link Crew, Academic League, ROTC, Community activity outside of school,

– Research of a career option and the activity in which you have pursued that career (think GEAR UP, SOTA, DATA, etc.)

Purpose of Activity for March 12-13

achievements, community service involvement, extra curricular activities and any other experiences that were beneficial to you throughout your high school experience, eg. GEAR UP experiences, academic league, robotics, sports, college visits and/or community activities outside of the school environment.

• Fill out a “request to submit” from your advisory teacher to enter the Senior exhibition pre plan contest. You must save your presentation to the Advisory flash drive for submission.

• The contest will select the top ten presentations and each winner will receive a college T-shirt or a Texas Instrument graphing calculator from the GEAR UP grant.

Nelson Mandela, a leader of the anti-apartheid movement in the 1940s, was jailed for 27 years before he became the first black president of South Africa. A symbol of global peacemaking, he won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993. His birthday, July 18, has been declared Mandela Day, a global celebration of his legacy.

In the movie “Invictus” Nelson Mandela, in his first term as the South African President, initiates a unique venture to unite the apartheid-torn land by enlisting the South African national rugby team on a mission to win the 1995 Rugby World Cup.

The UC Personal Statement: Brainstorming

• Essay #1: Describe the world you come from – for example, your family community or school – and tell us how your world has shaped your dreams and aspirations.Clue: Write about special circumstances which have influenced your educational experience. This might include small learning communities, physical or family challenges. Consider the struggle, the sacrifice, and the family background/circumstances. Describe your educational and career dreams, perhaps connecting what you have learned or done with your future goals. Be careful not to make excuses; just “paint a picture” of your life situation and how it has shaped your future goals.

• Essay #2: Tell us about a personal quality, talent, accomplishment, contribution or experience that is important to you. What about this quality or accomplishment makes you proud and how does it relate to the person you are?– Clue: Be careful not to make this into a verbal resume. Instead, focus upon one quality or

accomplishment. Consider academic talent, creative interests or leadership contributions. As a student, what will your “niche” be? The reader is looking for the way you might contribute to a UC campus.
