MARCH 12th CURRICULUM DAY Last Friday our staff spent a wonderful Curriculum Day with Lindsay Tighe from Inspirational Coaching. Research informs us that we become better at our work when we are coached by our peers. This curriculum day covered - how coaching can be one of the most powerful techniques in drawing out potential, the secrets to being a great coach, under- standing how one question can transform mindsets, an introduction to the powerful “GROW model” of questions and applying your learning in an ex- periential coaching activity. The GROW model can be used in so many aspects of our life. Lindsay has written several helpful books including - ‘BETTER PARENTS ASK BETTER QUESTIONS’ which encourages parents to become a Potentialiser and bring out the AMAZINGNESS in your kids! Visit her website for more information - http://www.icoachu.com.au/ STUDENT SAFETY – SUPERVISION During the school day, all teachers take their “duty of care” very seri- ously and work closely together to ensure students are supervised whilst in classrooms and also out in the playgrounds. In our planning, we have the school divided into zones and our staff are assigned to each of these zones from 8:45am before school, through each recess and lunchtime, as well as after school until 3:45pm. To ensure that students are appropriately supervised, we ask that students arrive at school after 8:45am each morning and collected no later than 3:45pm. Our teachers and office staff are busy after school with meetings and administrative tasks and are not able to provide supervision after 3:45pm. Parents are able to book children into the OSHCLUB school care program by visiting the website. PREP ENROLMENTS School tours with parents of 2016 Prep students have commenced – earlier than previous years! As I tour nearly all these parents comment on hearing great things about our school in the local community, which is fantastic. If you have a little one starting next year could I ask you to pick up an enrolment form at the office? PREP FAMILY FUN NIGHT What a great night! This annual low key event provides an opportunity for both parents and their children to meet socially and enjoy some games together. CURRICULUM DAY

Last Friday our staff spent a wonderful Curriculum Day with Lindsay

Tighe from Inspirational Coaching. Research informs us that we become

better at our work when we are coached by our peers. This curriculum

day covered - how coaching can be one of the most powerful techniques

in drawing out potential, the secrets to being a great coach, under-

standing how one question can transform mindsets, an introduction to the

powerful “GROW model” of questions and applying your learning in an ex-

periential coaching activity. The GROW model can be used in so many

aspects of our life. Lindsay has written several helpful books including -

‘BETTER PARENTS ASK BETTER QUESTIONS’ which encourages parents

to become a Potentialiser and bring out the AMAZINGNESS in your kids!

STUDENT SAFETY – SUPERVISION

During the school day, all teachers take their “duty of care” very seri-

ously and work closely together to ensure students are supervised whilst

in classrooms and also out in the playgrounds. In our planning, we have

the school divided into zones and our staff are assigned to each of

these zones from 8:45am before school, through each recess and

lunchtime, as well as after school until 3:45pm. To ensure that students

are appropriately supervised, we ask that students arrive at school after

8:45am each morning and collected no later than 3:45pm. Our teachers

and office staff are busy after school with meetings and administrative

tasks and are not able to provide supervision after 3:45pm. Parents are

able to book children into the OSHCLUB school care program by visiting

the website.

PREP ENROLMENTS

School tours with parents of 2016 Prep students have commenced –

earlier than previous years! As I tour nearly all these parents comment

on hearing great things about our school in the local community, which is

fantastic. If you have a little one starting next year could I ask you to

pick up an enrolment form at the office?

PREP FAMILY FUN NIGHT

What a great night! This annual low key event provides an opportunity

for both parents and their children to meet socially and enjoy some

games together. Thankyou to our Prep teaches for their organisation,

Mr Goldie for organising the sports equipment and games and to Mr

Ossie who finished the night with a few songs with our lovely Prep chil-

dren. Also thanks to the dads who did a great job cooking the sausages!

EASTER RAFFLE

The PFA are once again conducting our annual Easter Raffle which will be drawn on the last day of

term – Friday 27th March. Thankyou to the families who have already donated Easter Eggs for the

raffle and sold raffle tickets. Additional raffle books are available from the office. A very special

thankyou to Lisa Rule and Vanessa Stewart who are once again coordinating this raffle. Going by the

number of eggs we have received there will be several prizes. Last year there were 14 baskets of

eggs collected for our raffle – great odds from just buying one ticket!

TWILIGHT SPORTS

Our Annual Twilight Sports is scheduled for Wednesday 25th March. This is always a fun night – one

enjoyed by both the children and parents. Fingers crossed for good weather! This annual event brings

together the school community for a fun night as the children rotate around a number of athletic

events. The children all receive a participation certificate at the end of the night. I know Mr Goldie

would like the children to arrive and be assembled on the oval by 5:00pm with events starting at

5:05pm and continuing until 6:30pm. Each year working at the sprint event I love watching the little

ones charging down the track looking in amazement at how quickly their legs are moving. See next

week’s newsletter for a program of events.

KNOX RELAY FOR LIFE 2015

This wonderful event starts on Saturday March 28th at 4:00pm through to 10:00am on Sunday

March 29th at the Knox Park Athletic Track Knoxfield on the corner of Scoresby Road & Ferntree

Gully Road. This is a fantastic Knox community event that raises money to support those within the

Knox community who are impacted by cancer. Your support, at any level, will be greatly appreciated

and you will have the knowledge that you have been a part of Knox Relay for Life 2015 and its prac-

tical support of the work of Cancer Vic within Knox. We are very proud of our very own Amy Hillier

who has been the Chairperson of this event since it commenced three years ago and to date

$283,000 has been raised. Our school staff and friends have entered a team in this event so if you

have time, pop down and give them some support – I know they would appreciate some company as

they circle the track.

ACTIVE APRIL 2015

All members of our school community are invited to take part in “Premier’s Active April”. This initia-

tive is aimed at having Victorian’s become more active. With over 25% of Victorian school children

considered overweight, establishing the importance of physical activity during childhood can ensure

lifelong participation with resulting health, social, economic and environmental benefits. Research also

suggests that time in physical activity may improve academic learning outcomes. Active April chal-

lenges students, parents and staff to engage in 30 minutes of physical activity on as many days as

possible throughout April. This activity can be achieved in countless ways: walking, riding, running,

climbing play equipment, training for sporting teams, swimming, household chores, Phys-ed and Sport

lessons at school, martial arts, dance, etc. We have established a school team for Active April and

would love you to join (there is no cost involved and if there are days when you can’t manage the 30

minutes of exercise that is no problem either). By participating you also become eligible to win priz-

es individually and for the school.

ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM

As an accredited Health Promoting School we are a part of the “Achievement Pro-

gram”. This program covers a diverse range of health areas and sets benchmarks in

each of these areas. We are pleased to announce that we have been awarded ad-

vanced standing in the area of “Physical Activity” having met all of the benchmarks

in this area. We are currently well on our way to completing the area of “Sun Pro-

tection”. Our action plan in this area has included the provision of additional shaded

play areas and drinking taps, the supply of bulk sunscreen pump packs in each class-

room and the sale of mini-sunscreen tubes that clip onto school bags. We are now

planning to increase awareness of UV levels throughout the school. We look forward

to working with our school community to make The Basin Primary School an even

healthier environment.

HOTSHOTS TENNIS

On Wednesday all students in Grade Prep, 1 and 2 thoroughly enjoyed a session of

Hotshots tennis. Hotshots is modified tennis played on a reduced size court with

smaller racquets and lower compression tennis balls that bounce slowly allowing extra

time for strokes to be played. Not only did our students love the tennis but the

giveaways were also a big hit. The sessions were run by coach Seb from Batterham

Park Tennis club (adjoining The Basin Football Club). If you would like to arrange a

free come and try Hotshots Tennis lesson lesson (days are flexible )

please call Seb on 0408 710 235
