My Tunes: Music ThaT shaped My Life Nine North SE/SW rep Trudie Daniell discusses her most important songs, artists or concerts: 1. Hee Haw and The Barbara Mandrell Show: These aren’t exactly concerts, but both exposed me to country music at a young age. I loved watching every week, and would sing and dance along with the performances.2. Donny Osmond, Alone Together: This was the very first album I owned. It was a hand-me-down from a neighbor and I listened to

it a million times. Donny was my very first musical crush. I had the dolls, the record player and the lunchbox. I could probably still sing along to every word of every song on that album.3. Randy Travis, Storms of Life: This album brought me back to country after spending much of the ‘80s listening to pop. I “borrowed” the cassette from my brother and played it until I wore it out, literally. 4. George Strait, Pure Country: This movie made me start thinking about careers in music, outside of being a performer. That year I started researching schools in Nashville and transferred to Belmont to major in Music Business. Ironically, my first job out of college was working for Erv Woolsey.5. Lee Ann Womack/The Fool: The very first No. 1 record I worked. I still hear that song and get choked up. I love this business!• A highly regarded song or album you’ve never heard: Any Grateful Dead song or album. • An “important” piece of music you just don’t get: Bob Dylan. I am a lyric person, and I can’t understand what he’s saying.• An album you played or listened to incessantly: Every Mark Chesnutt album. His voice blows me away.• One obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: Stoney LaRue. My favorite is “Closer To You,” but I love all of his music. If you aren’t familiar with Stoney, go to iTunes immediately and buy it all!

SVP/Promotion Steve Hodges. “He has been, and will continue to be, an integral part of our Capitol team.”

Underwood’s Play Toys There’s no kitchen sink in Carrie Underwood’s Play On tour production, but there’s just about everything else. WIOV/Lancaster, PA PD/PM driver Rich Creeger was at the tour open in Reading last week. “The production is far and away above anything I would have imagined,” he says. “She opens with ‘Cowboy Casanova,’ rising up from the stage on a red velvet couch and wearing a tuxedo.” (Watch here.) Creeger counted seven costume changes and says the flying blue pickup truck is the crowning production piece. “It comes out of the side of the stage, rises up with her in the bed and carries her to the back near the soundboard, giving all those fans a front-row seat.” (Watch here.) Memorable moments include: Underwood playing piano on “Mama’s Song,” performing a fan club-voted cover of Bryan Adams’ “Summer of ‘69,” recreating the Grand Ole Opry during a video duet of “I Told You So” with Randy Travis (watch here) and swinging beneath a tree limb on “Just A Dream.” During “Change,” her gown revealed moving video, perhaps a nod to the video screen-covered robot suit in which the late Michael Jackson planned to enter his final concerts – which just happened to share Underwood’s production designer, Michael Cotton.

Moore’s Guitar Pull A stolen guitar almost ruined Justin Moore’s weekend, but WYCD/Detroit’s Dr. Don and a remorseful fan turned things around. Moore’s treasured Gibson J-45 acoustic disappeared after a concert in Royal Oak, MI Friday (3/12). Dr. Don went on-air and posted notices to the web and Facebook Sunday (3/14), and within an hour a friend of the thief contacted the station. Dr. Don met him at a neutral location, recovered the guitar and texted photos to Moore. “It was a drunken mistake,” the cuprit wrote in a confession note that was stashed in the guitar case. “I would like to deeply and sincerely apologize for what I’ve done. I’m going out and buying 50 of your CDs today.” Moore says, “We all make mistakes, but we don’t always make it right. It says a lot about the guy.”

Where’s The Payoff (continued from page 1) But when it comes to generating or calculating share, that’s based on daily cume. Therefore, as a PD, it’s desirable to have an eye on the daily cume. CC: There’s a term being bandied around by radio and record people: “PPM friendly.” What does that mean to you? SL: Gary’s company is trying to advance how we are measured and make it more real. The pain that goes with that is the small sample size. If you start to skin that onion really thin you can go to some dayparts in some demos and go, “Man, I had a 16 this week and the next week I had a 1.” That’s confusing. That can drive you crazy. When you say you’re going to be PPM friendly, the first thing is how is it measured, how does the information come in and where does the data come from? Try to understand that. I still hear programmers talking about things they believe to be true in the PPM environment that aren’t true. If you don’t understand [those basics], you’re never going to be able to become PPM friendly. When you think about the last 20 years of [CRS], the R&R Convention or NAB, a lot of the things you heard about great radio are still true. You’ve got to have a great image building campaign. You’ve got to have a strategy for your radio station. You have to be very creative with those things. And the way you package them is the biggest thing in being PPM friendly. CC: The king of imaging is sitting next to you. Imaging is such an important part of what you do on your stations, isn’t it? SM: Branding and imaging are very important, but I think it’s a lot simpler than that. I have an easier analogy to consider: Even if there were only 10 meters in the market, nine out of 10 doctors are going to respond to good radio a certain way. PPM is reality measurement – it’s what people are actually doing,

directly connected what is coming out of the speakers every second. If it’s really entertaining, solid radio, it’s PPM friendly. There is an absolutely heightened sense of accountability. You’re forced to think about every second of every day. Before the meter I would know there were certain things, especially with some of the part time staff or lower priorities, that I would let slide. When you’re held accountable [as in PPM], you really have to pay attention to all those things. Better focus. Better sense of getting to the point. All of that yields a better result. GM: I’m not defending a sample size, but I do want to point out that if you had a market that had 1,200 diaries over a three month period, over the course of those 12 weeks you had 100 diaries available any given day. But with PPM, every day you have 400 meters. Data points are much more statistically consistent in the meter methodology by a four-to-one ratio. CC: Do you program to those 400 meters, or do you program to the masses? SL: I’m very mindful they’re out there. I’m not programming specifically to them. When we talk about promotions, a morning show idea or marketing campaign, it’s about having the right ingredients to move TSL and occasions. But after that, is it fun?

Is it entertaining? Is anybody going to say something to their friend about what you’re doing on the radio? Because that’s what’s going to sustain you over time. Great radio cannot be held back by a measuring system. Great radio stations will always be highly rated because they’re great. When you think about how you used to game the diary system, we all know how to do it. We dealt with it for a couple of decades. This is no different, but that’s the mechanic science of programming, that’s not show business. Being mindful of it is one thing, but being entertaining is the true art form. CC: Is there one trick you’ve learned from PPM? SM: Yes, and I’ll have all of the details on that coming up at 10:48. CC: Thank you for that segue because I do want to talk about appointments. SL: You tell a jock why an appointment is important and how to set them, but the highest art form is not to be so mechanical. There’s a point, the apex of information where the interest curve goes up – when you get too close to that you’re creating disappointment. You’re not setting an appointment. Hey, here’s a nice juicy steak, let me cut it for you, here’s the fork and you get it close to their mouth and pull it away – you can’t do that. If you go too far into that information, “You had me right there, you could have told me and you didn’t!” Tease the bit, give the time you’re going to pay off and you’ll have higher ratings. You can’t take it so far that you’re the person who never pays off. I hear that on the radio a lot in PPM markets. CAC (Ed. Note: More next week.)

These are the new weights for Country Aircheck/Mediabase Country Reporters, based on audience figures from the Fall 2009 Arbitron ratings. Weights for stations in PPM markets use a three-month average of September-October-November AQH Persons. The weights are calculated by this formula: Market rank is multiplied by 10 and then added to the station’s AQH Persons. A station’s weight is determined by dividing that adjusted AQHP by the leading Country station’s adjusted AQHP. For this period, that station is WUSN/Chicago, with an adjusted AQHP of 33,330. Station Weight = (Market rank X 10 + station AQHP) divided by 33,330. These new weights are effective with next week’s Country Aircheck/Mediabase Country chart.
