The ASYMCA provided an op- portunity, through the FRO, for the spouses/parents of de- ployed the opportunity to cre- ate a “CARE PACKAGE” of donated items that are sent to the Marine or Sailor. In the CARE PACKAGE are the phone cards along with other items. This year we provided the spouses/parents with donor contact information on a flyer and asked that the spouse/par- ent send a thank you, as well as the Marine/Sailor. Many times the Marine/Sailor does not respond to donors because of the conditions of deploy- ment. A wife came in today very happy! She had not heard from her husband since December. He was with 1st Tanks. Because of his location & duty assignment, he did not have access to a phone until last night. He had received her CARE PACKAGE and in the package was the phone card that he used to talk to her and their 8 year old daughter. MeglemreNORWALK—Congratula-

tions to the Keystone #2 team, who claimed the 2008-2009 league championship Monday, following the first game at Keystone Lanes. Members are Kathy Parrish, Daisy McReynolds, Bernice Bennett and team captain, Berneice King.

Credit also super sub Teri Hef-ner for her support when she was called in to finish the league for Berneice King, who suffered leg problems which required surgery and therapy. Although she was un-able to bowl, after 35 games, she’s now much improved and expects to attend the league awards lun-cheon on March 30.

She also wants to publicly thank Bernice Bennett for not only taking over team captain duties but also for conducting the weekly optional high scratch game and se-ries event.

It’s interesting to note that this team won the league title two years ago under the banner of Cal Bowl, and that Teri Hefner stepped in for Daisy McReynolds when Daisy was sidelined shortly after the league started and was unable to complete that season.

The rest of the league will con-tinue to battle down to the wire on the final position round week to earn a few more dollars from the Position pay-off. Team captains will also draw for lane assignment for March 30th team sweeps. Cer-ritos Lanes hosts teams sweeps and we will bowl at 9:30 am to accomodate league members, sponsors and guests attending the awards luncheon. Reservation is slated again at Home Town Buf-fet in Cerritos, South and Gridley. The 16-place sweeps payoff will be announced and paid at the lun-cheon.

High scorers Monday were, Nancy Soto 228-561, Dorothy Scott 536, Vi Wilson 202-528, Teri Hefner 528, Jamie Vallier 515, Aresia McGee 514, Doris Lewis and Darlene Waken tied on 510, Audry Thibodeaux and Margo McClain tied on 507, Dee Phipps 506, Faye Billinger and Gina Har-rison tied on 494, Joy Bennett 493 and 4-6-10 splitacular for Roberta McNaught.

League Meeting results: Nan McGill, Jay Haggerty and Ro-berta McNaught, audit commit-tee, reviewed and approved the league and 50/50 financial report; President Roberta McNaught called for confirmation for team franchise renewal and there will be one Franchise available for next season in the 16-team league.(Call Alice at 562-423-1567 if in-terested) Cal Bowl will return to the schedule next season and the league maximum remains at 675 for 4-member teams. Election of Officers stayed the same, Roberta McNaught, president; Vi Wilson, vice president and Alice Meglem-re, league manager The 2009-2010 league formation meeting is slated 10 a.m. Monday July 20 in the Cal Bowl conference room.

NEXT WEEK: FINAL WEEK AND POSITION ROUND AT 9:30 A.M. Monday, March 23, WESTMINSTER LANES. Also note 9:30 a.m. Team sweeps will be held at Cerritos at 9:30 a.m.

National Deaf Bowling NewsJoey Harris Hits 3rd Career 300

by Connie MarchioneLAS VEGAS—Another Team Nation guy grabbed the head-

lines besides Carl Malucci and Barrett Lee in the Mountain Sid-ers league at Red Rock Lanes. Barely a month after he rolled his 2nd career 300 and came close to hitting another with a 288 in a deaf tournament at Sunset Station Lanes, Joey Harris hit his #3 perfecto last Wednesday March 11. The Las Vegas right-hander put together 12 strikes in his 2nd game in his (248-300-215) 763 series that upped his average to 211.

Now Team Nation boasts with 3 men with honor scores in the Mountain Siders league. Besides Harris’ 300, Barrett Lee had 822 (288-244-290 on Feb. 4) and Malucci himself a 299 shot a couple weeks ago on Feb. 25 (see next story below). That night of Harris’ 300, Team Nation hit 2614 with Barrett’s wife Melchora’s 568, Harris’ 763, Barrett’s 585 and Malucci’s 698 but the team still had the league leading 2733 series. Malucci’s 698 is his third under 700 series in this league, the other were 656 and 671.

MALUCCI ROLLED HIS 14th 299 GAMELAS VEGAS...Last Wednesday Feb, 25 Carl Malucci came

close to hitting his 42nd career 300 when his last ball of the night left a solid 7 pin standing for his 14th career 299 game. The fabu-lous left-hander shot a 779 series on games of 279-201-299.

The 279 had 7 front strikes and a solid 7 pin in 8th, spare and struck out and the 201 was a rough game with 3 splits and a missed 7 pin spare but luckily with enough strikes to pull it over 200.

MALUCCI HITS 17 CONSECUTIVE 700 SERIES IN ONE LEAGUE

LAS VEGAS—Although Carl Malucci already had the USBC record for the most consecutive (17) 700 series bowled in combined two leagues, he wanted to focus on breaking the old record in one league. So with his 13th consecutive 700s in his Sunday Mixers League at Red Rock Lanes on Jan. 25 being the last count stopped with a 656 series after 4 consecutive 700s in his Wednesday Mountain Siders League, he continued on to hit 4 more to break the record. Lets see how he did it.On Sunday Feb. 1 did not bowl .Sunday Feb. 8 rolled his 14th 705 (sorry I lost the scores)Sunday Feb. 15 the team requested a make -up on afternoon of Feb. 22.Sunday afternoon Feb. 22 team make-up, rolled his 15th 708 (221-244-243)*Sunday Feb. 22 rolled his 16th 772 (233-260-pocket 7-10 split and 11 in row 279)Sunday March 1st rolled his one league record 17th 749 (259-257-233) *With uncertainty of the legality of the make-up games bowled on the afternoon of February 22 next to half of the cen-ter with kids and people bowling in moonlight, camera flashing lights, being accepted or not. His 708 made under such distract-ing condition had 5 splits in it. Regardless of that Malucci is try-ing to continue his 700 quest on Sunday March 15. He did not bowl on March 8.

SN-CDBA HAS A WEBSITE FOR BOWLERS TO LOOK AT RESULTS

MORENO VALLEY—Southern Nevada-California Deaf Bowling Association Secretary-treasurer Stan Booth created a website for all bowlers and fans to look at the results of its 25th anniversary tournament held in Las Vegas. All one with comput-er has to do is put in internet http://mysite.verizon.net/respevf2/sncdba and click on what you want to read.

Saying Goodbye...by Joy McGregor

ORANGE COUNTY—Although you cannot always see the bird singing, you can always hear her song....and Orange County says goodbye to past board member and director, Dottie Foley. Dottie lost her short but courageous battle with lung cancer on February 23rd. She was 78.

Dottie was a fun-lov’n, wise crack’n, good friend and hard worker. She was extremely talented in the arts and crafts field and was invaluable on all our board projects. She travelled as a delegate to many, many state and national conventions and tour-naments. She loved life, cherished her family and friends and LOVED bowling. I believe she coined the phrase, “Thank You Bowling Jesus!” Dottie could be heard uttering this everytime she struck, converted a split or a difficult spare; always made us giggle!

Dottie was preceded in death by her eldest son Dennis in De-cember of last year. She is survived by Dick, her loving husband of 60 years; children Richard, Sharon Meek (Gary) and Deborah Bennett; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Our condolences go out to the Foley family. Sympathy cards may be sent to Dick Foley, 4045 Prospect #110, Yorba Linda, 92886. Dottie will be greatly missed by all who knew her. God Bless!

Lowell Who????by Fran Deken

In November the USBC an-nounced the new inductees for the 2009 USBC Hall of Fame. In the Veteran category it was Gene Stus, a well-known star of the senior circuit and in Meritorious Service it was Tom Kouros and Lowell Rothschild. Kouros, a top-notch coach and author of books on bowling as well as a columnist in the Bowlers Journal is known to many people in the bowling world but the question in many minds is “Who the heck is Lowell Roth-schild?”

Of course, with the announce-ment came the bios on these folks and now everyone knows that Rothschild, a Tucson attorney, is a past president of the American Bowling Congress. Wait a minute, so were lots of guys and they’re not in the Hall of Fame! In fact, only one past president, Max Skel-ton, is in the Hall of Fame! ABC presidents only served one year terms after moving up the ranks of numerous vice-presidencies and all of them served on many committees and put in a multitude of service hours. So what makes Lowell Rothschild special?

Lowell is what I would call a “go-to” guy. You go to Lowell to get things done, then Lowell goes to big corporations to get them to pay for it. Maybe that’s a double “go-to” guy. If you read his bio that came out with the Hall of Fame announcement, then you know that he started the first Edu-cation committee to train associa-tion volunteers, then he proceeded to establish an award for the best of those volunteers, as well as handling the ABC legal commit-tee, getting the PBA to sanction their events, and working to make single membership happen. Along the way he raised over a million bucks for the International Bowl-ing Museum and Hall of Fame. But did you also know that for many years Lowell has been in-volved with an organization called MaccabiUSA which sends Jewish athletes to the Maccabiah Games both in Israel and South America every four years. The games in-volve over 60 countries and 30 sports, including ten-pin bowling. He has served on their board, been a games organizer, chaired the ten pin bowling and is currently fund-raising for the 2009 games.

But you still don’t really know Lowell, a short man who’s ex-ceptionally long on brains, a man who’s always smiling, has a great sense of humor and loves bowling, unusual traits in an attorney.

I was fortunate enough to be on the first women’s bowling team that went to the Maccabiah Games in Israel in 2001, thanks to Low-ell’s fundraising and recruiting efforts. Lowell even hit on manu-facturers for the newest balls, bags and shoes. When the team showed up with Storm’s red, white and blue basketball spare ball, the oth-er bowlers went nuts, begging us to give them the ball. Lowell was in his 70’s then and he made the long trip to Tel Aviv in July to be with his bowlers. July in Tel Aviv is like being in Vegas with humid-ity! Israel only has five bowling centers so he made the one hour trip daily from Tel Aviv to Netan-ya, which has a 20 lane center(big for Israel), to encourage us and cheer for us and was thrilled when the women won more medals than the men, justifying his push to in-clude us in the games. We asked Lowell to carry the flag in one of the medal ceremonies and he did it with great enthusiasm. Toward the end of our third week in Israel Lowell asked us if we thought we could get to Tel Aviv for dinner one night. We bowled every day until 5 pm but of course, we said it was no problem. Athletes at the games are fed buffet style and the buffet menu hadn’t changed in over two weeks so all twelve bowlers eagerly taxied to his ho-tel and then we started walking in the 90 degree heat at 6:30 in the evening. ”It’s not far,” said Lowell with a twinkle in his eye, “and dinner is on me.” We still didn’t know where we were going but Lowell is like the Pied Piper. He talks and you follow him any-where. What a dinner - fabulous steaks, a private room, good wine and good company! Lowell told us stories about earlier Maccabi bowling teams that had us laugh-ing so hard we cried. If anyone was owed a dinner, it was Lowell! Like any good lawyer he asked questions about ourselves and our families and he listened attentive-ly, like any good lawyer. Lowell still bowls in a weekly league and plans to bowl the USBC Champi-onships for his 46th time this year. He’s the kind of friend who would give you the shirt off his back but, be careful, because his other hand is out for a donation to whatever cause he’s currently working on. And since he’s Lowell Rothschild, he’ll probably get it.

Blind Bowlers Prepare For Nationals (L-R) Thelma the Seeing Eye Coach will lead the way to Cleveland for the blind team from Keystone. Roy Ramsey, Brenden Wright, Dave Olsen & Jason Eien.

Blind Bowlers Going To Nationals

NORWALK—Once again, Keystone Lanes will be sending our blind bowlers to the Ameri-can Blind Bowlers Association’s National Tournament. In the past two years, California has placed in the top positions in the Nation. This year we will be sending Roy Ramsey, who was one of the Master’s Champions, and Jason Eien, who is the past National Champion of overall events. Joining these two will be Dave Olsen and Brenden Wright.

This group will be going to Cleveland, Ohio, in late May and we are hoping for a National Championship team. Journey for the Blind, (The name of our California team) is preparing for this event. Although California is a large state, only two or three teams throughout the whole state of California, will make it to this event.

Journey for the Blind, is only four years old and already has made a name for themselves. We need to support them and let them know that bowlers across California and especially in Southern California are behind this great cause.

During the next two months we all will be tested because eco-nomics has hit all of us includ-ing the Blind. The cost of this trip will be close to $3,000.00. The Blind are raising funds to help the team and they are ask-ing for any donations that could help them reach their goal to be the National Champions! If you have spare change, a few dol-lars or want to assist in helping our Blind, it will help make this dream a reality.

If you are interested in donat-ing please contact us at 562-868-3261 and ask for Rob. You may also contact us at [email protected]. All donations are tax deductible and it will be awesome to support our cham-pion Blind Bowlers.

Journey for the Blind, we are proud of you, good luck and high scoring!

Eric Forkel Wins Senior Division WCST Ebonite

Singles at La Habra “300” Kevin Gannon Super Senior Champion

by Dick SandersLA HABRA—Eric Forkel (Henderson, NV), despite build-

ing up a big lead in the finals, lost that lead, and then the last 3 games bounced back with a 771 score, which included a big 289 game, and won those matches to win his 9th WCST Title. Don Blatchford, took the lead from after game 5 and held a comfort-able lead, up until game #9, and then disaster popped up for Don as he rolled a 167 game, and dropped to 3rd place going into the position match, meanwhile, Mike Rick took the lead and bowled Eric for the championship.

Eric, down 40 pins, from Mike won the match 278 to 224, and the tournament by 44 pins. Eric has won the 1st two WCST Tournaments this year with come from behind wins in the posi-tion matches. One fine note, new WCST member, Alisha Hill, the only lady bowling this past week-end, made the finals, and finished in 6th place. A 300 game, in the 10th game of qualifying put Craig Kisro in the finals. A big turn-of entries for this one, with 41 seniors entered, and 33 super seniors. 80 bowlers would have been the maximum field. We had cancellations due to sick-ness, work, and various other reasons.

A total of $9,585.00 was paid out, and for two tournaments this year, a total of $18,855.00 paid out.

For 283 Tournaments, a grand total now of $3,333,323.00 has been paid out. Top 3:, 1st place, Eric Forkel $1000.00, 2nd Place, Mike Rick (Redlands), $725.00, and 3rd place to Don Blatch-ford (Santa Monica), $540.00. We like to thank our host, the La Habra “300” Bowl, and the GM. Mr. Gary Kowarsch, and their workers, and the cooperation, they gave us as usual, and a great bowling center to have our tournaments. Thanks to Martin Brooks, a good job doing the brackets.

ning a title. This one was the Super Senior Championship, his 27th Title, and now tied with Vaughn Doody for most champion-ships in the WCST.

818-769-7600 or 877-2380when you have time to spare

STUDIO CITY — Hey, remember the 80’s? We sure do, because bowling was present in cities across the nation as a new national pastime. Yet, during this time some people clamored to television sets, watching mindless cartoons. Sure we wish Lionel would have bowled a 300 on Thun-dercats but by practicing bowling back then you could be a champion now.

PINZ ADULTS Instead, you can still become your best, you can rule your own bowling Castle Greyskull. Many of you ride your bowling balls to greatness as He-Man rode Battle Cat. Their partnership is only rivaled by the good nature of our leagues. So “by the power of Greyskull” we present these scores: Twilighters: Ron Koblin 240/710, Bob Riffle 247/641, Laurie Faso 236/628, Scott Brutz 605, Dane Price 236, Al Zuniga 224. Tavern Guild: Tina Hackett 225/609, Rick Kondo 230/605, Tom Whitaker 214, Tony Annibale 211. 44 Blue: Rasha Drachkovitch 470, Mike Hale 249/397, Jacob Hekter 444. Kings and Queens: Ross Goldman 237/684, Jon Schell 592, Richard Fischer 223, Randy Frederick 223, Jonathan Kendrick 213, David McKennett 213. Music and Lyrics: Eric Jackson 192/536, Ray Brown 223, Jordan Omley 522. Funseekers: Chuck Alexander 691, Eddie Barnes 249/677, Zoran Jacimovic 245/656, Keane Murakami 249/649, Jim Moore 645, Mike Fort 256, Marvin Nance 247. S.C.B.L.: Michael Gurrieri 290/698, Jim Foltyn 247/643, Tom Sardo 239/630, Keane Murakami 280/624, Tony Laanan 616, Brian Swatfager 247. Rock-N-Bowlers: David Phillips 430, Paul Turbow 171.

PINZ JUNIORS With all the new fangled bowling balls surfaces you may have to just choose something simple. This parallels to that of cartoons, which back then were simpler. Take the Snorks for example, they basically are Smurfs that breathe underwater and use clams as currency. This may not relate to bowling but all of us in Snorkland present these scores: Adult Junior: Damond Taylor 191/506, Max Korn 205/499, Treven Goldsmith 448, Jamie Spector 177/442, Ethan Bensinger 159/424, Martin Korn 160. Senior Scratch: Treven Goldsmith 226/804, Natalie Kato 197/718, Scott Englehart 712, Natalie Honda 203/694, Brittlan Halpern 212/687, Nikolai Berk 193. Senior Galaxies: Stirling McCulloch 161/424, Mario Vargas 134/372, Wendy Rowlett 126/361, Daniel Cohen 137/358, Jessica Taylor 136/305. Junior Stars: Nicole Martinez 146/351, Nicholas Martinez 93/221. Pee Wee Bumpers: Samantha Vargas 111/187, Oran Peretz 81/150, Kayla Arriaga 78/147, Andrew Parker 135, Steven Santiago 123, Jasper Harder 79, Jasper Breitmayer 75.

PINZ SENIORS/LADIES Now “your” cartoons were much different than that of Thundercats. I mean a cougar-type guy named Panthero who fought an old man wrapped in cloth Mummra is only apparent in this mind-altering series. Your scores have echoed in the world of Thundera for years, and here are the scores: Happy Timers: Nelson Hicks 201/496, Ken Burkenheim 190/477, Ruth Swick 158/423, Yolanda Dragotta 154/407. Breakfast Club: Nancy Kato 222/577, Myrna Schiffman 474, Pam Vaughan 164/471, Elaine Vanoff 175/455, Donna Klein 453, Sofia Pechman 177, Charlene Gaffney 165. Coffee and Donuts: Sharon Lawrence 178/507, Karen Wolkoff 178/493, Hildegard Miller 483, Pauline Lipin 180/481, Charlene Gaffney 205/470, Christine Stark 195, Lu-Juan Lietzke 191. Pin Pals: Karen Collier 180/509, Shelly Djercian 159/426, Judy Kautz 148/385, Barbara Weissman 140/369, Ellen Engel 355, J.C. Moore 137. Joslyn Seniors: Arnold Freedman 196/526, Bill Mancini 191/522, Teri Bonato 200/504, Yolanda Dragotta 182/482. Senior Social: Nelson Hicks 234/561, Teri Bonato 172/494, Charlene Gaffney 179/486, Joel Margolis 172/464, Bob Garrick 188/458. Bowler of the Week: Remember the 80’s cartoons can be quite exciting (especially in this fantastic editorial), yet the ony 80’s that we are not riffing with is those shot by our favorite bowlers. Keane “Loudmouth” Murakami shot a 280 on Thursday night, while a few lanes away Michael Gurrieri topped him by bowling a 290. Great bowling, guys. Sweetness Quote of the Week: “I told you never to call me Osbert!!!” “Snarfer snarfer, sorry Uncle Snarf.” — Snarf when questioned about bowling skill.

JAT Mourns The Loss Of Mickey CollettiThe JAT is mourning the loss of its founder Vincent “Mickey”

Colletti. Mickey passed away on February 14, 2009 just 10 days shy of his 85th birthday. See the information at the JAT web-site and please send a card to his family thanking them for his wonderful life and what he gave to junior bowling in Southern California.

Matt Jones Is BackMatt Jones came back to JAT action with a vengeance an-

nouncing that he wanted to win again “where he got his start” and took care of business at Brunswick Covina Bowl. In qualify-ing, Charlie Hair made a run at the top-seed with a 300 game in Game 6 of qualifying to get to +260 just shy of Jones’ +284 lead. Eddie Sayles rounded out the top-12 at +111 on the high-scoring condition. In the bracket, the top-3 seeds moved into the quarter-finals joined by Cort McPherson who was on fire on the left side. Charlie Hair took out Travis Zehntner 2-1 while Jones cooled down Cort by posting 523 for his two games and advancing 2-1. This set up a match of the 1 and 2 seeds for the title. Jones con-tinued slamming the pocket taking game one 247-237 and game two 265-223. Congratulations Matt and welcome back!

Adult/Junior Tournament This SundayThis Sunday is our second Adult-Junior tournament of the

season. We’ll be making our way down to Linbrook Bowl for this very fun event! There will be two divisions- 399 and under handicap (bring proof of average) and 400+ scratch. We will be using the Classic Format- 5 games of individual qualifying fol-lowed by the cut then 5 games of Baker Match-Play to qualify for the Top-5 Baker finals. Entry fee is $75 per team- there will be $2 scholarship brackets for the juniors, $5 scratch brackets for the adults and the $252 Match Twenty-Five will be open to everyone- $2 for juniors and $3 for adults. Special raffle for a bowling ball of choice as well as door prizes for all bowlers. Parents, brothers, sisters and friends we hope to see you all on the lanes this Sunday!

USBC Makes Age ChangeUSBC has made a ruling to change the eligible age for junior

bowling to 20 years old beginning next season. I am seriously considering instituting an adult sanctioned “Senior Division” next year for bowlers age 21-25 if they do not consider making changes to the ruling. The “Senior Division” would bowl with the JAT on Sundays except the prize fund, brackets and sidepots would be cash. Please drop me your comments at [email protected] so we know what you are all thinking too!

JAT Farm Clubby David Gordon

COVINA—Welcome to another update of the JAT Farm Club, the up and coming Finest Junior Bowlers in Southern Cali-fornia. On March 8th, we took our talent to Brunswick Covina Lanes, where we had twenty-three bowlers present. This is a rather small turnout and lead to a match play cut of only twelve. JATFC bowlers – where are you? We thank the staff and man-agement for the fine accommodations for the day.

In the qualifying round we start off with the leader Brian Her-nandez with a plus 156 for five games that included 236-244-257. Our qualifying high game came from our most recent champion, Ryan Melton with a 275 game. Other reportable highs in quali-fying were from Brandon Pekins 268-267, Noel Sosa 256, Stevn Roderick 254, Wesley Low 253-232, Teddie Carter 226-242-231, Marty McDonald 242, Courtney Schult 236, Randall De Leon 224, and Victor Hilvano 224. The cut line to advance came in at minus 42.

In match play, we had more grand scoring from De Leon 300-223, Hernandez 268, McDonald 223-257-257, Pekins 236-225, Carter 232-226, Roderick 220, Gary Smith 220, and Gabriella Mayfield 220. McDonald made a six position jump from his 11th qualifying spot to get in to the finals. However, it was De Leon that jumped eight positions to take over the lead after ten games. Amazing what a perfect game will do for you.

The finals then started off with 5th seed McDonald (+163) taking on the 4th spot Hernandez (+180). Hernandez captured this match 241-214. Hernandez then met 3rd seed Pekins (+188) with Pekins taking this game 257-223. Now Pekins faced off with 2nd seed Carter (+215) as Pekins stayed lined up to carry a 221-182 win. Pekins moved into the final pairing against top seed De Leon (+273) looking for his first title since September 2007. De Leon would have nothing to do with that as he cap-tured the first two games in the best of three, 230-223 and 192-169. This is Randall’s second Farm Club title this season. Con-gratulations Mr. De Leon.

Bowlers, I leave it up to you to get those other members out here. The more bowlers we start with, the higher the cut line. That statement includes this Sunday’s tournament at Linbrook Bowling Center. This will be our second Adult/Junior Doubles tournament with two divisions, scratch (team 400 and above) and handicap (team 399 and under). So speaking of handicap, let’s get those parents and adult supporters out there on Sunday. Each division will be allocated at least 16 lanes, so we should be able to comfortably field 32-48 teams per division. Let’s rock the place.

The format for both divisions will be five games qualifying, five games Baker match play, and top five Baker finals. Check-in begins at 8:15 with the action to begin shortly after 9:00. Adults, please bring a current league sheet with your “true” average or plan to take a, let’s see maybe a 225. Sounds good to me. Every-one – I’ll see you on Sunday morning.
