I've never had anyone send me a letter about 'corrections to the minutes' before. Seems that on page 5 of the last VARI FYI (written December 10th, dated January, delivered in February) in Section 19 of the VAR minutes, 6 *'s down: Blue Ridge Grotto was given billing as "also undertaking a similar project in the Roanoke area," and implied that RASS thought of it first. BRG's update on the Bat Education/Conservation Project was a concept developed by them back in July 1987. To BRG: Bring this up at the Sunday VAR meeting April 24.

alive and weill Her sister-in-law passed away in November, and misinformation floated around that it was her.

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management published a final version of its "Cave Resources Management" policy. It "provides overall policy guidance for the management of cave and karst resources on the BLM administered lands." This includes: pro­tect cave resources, land-use activities "(should) not cause unacceptable impacts," promote "consistency among Federal agencies with cave management responsibilities."

The NSS Convention fund-raising committee is soliciting craft items for the annual auction. Send to the NSS office (Cave Ave., Huntsville, AL 35810) or bring to the convention.

The Eastern Region is busy trying to "get their act together" regarding the area's "call-down" system for NCRC. Be sure to sign up for any training near you, and make sure your grotto, or the nearest grotto to you, has up-to-date information about your skills, address, numbers, etc.

CAVE Discounts at Endless Caverns. Check at the rest areas on 1-95 and 1-8 1 for discount coupons, good thru Dec. '88.

John Powers gave a good accounting of the things to look for in a "Cave Car," (Sub ... Sun). Now I know why everyone wants me to drive: my Dodge Colt Vista is one of the four vehicles listed that is cheap(ish), good mpg, carry at least four cav­ers with room for gear, and makes a good wet weather ''tent." Other 4WD station wagons were: Toyota Tercel, Honda Civic, and Subaru.

Nutrition during rescues. In a report appearing first in the April '85 NSS News suggestions were made to consider the food fed to rescuers and the victims. Clear vegetable broth, not sugars, caffeine, protein, or fat, should be administered. The reason being-everyone's digestive system is under stress and needs food that will not take the energy away from the muscles.

CCV has awarded a grant of $ 1200 to a Richmond group, headed by Ron Morton and Mary Barrett, called the Urban Bat Recovery Task Force. The group_will study urball bgt W_ID'JlJ() PL91ect them. (Ed. ques­tion? Did BRG get a grant too?)

LIMITED ACCESS CAVE CODE

Caves are listed by county within state. Each cave has a four letter code showing the status of access to the cave.

The first letter of the code indicates the access status of the cave: e - Cave is closed all or part of the year. L - Lilited access cave conditionally) o - Open cave but special circulstances lay apply

The second letter of the code gives the conditions of access of entrance: A - Entrance to cave can be gained only by paYlent of a fee (collercial'

unless otherwise noted) B - Cave IS closed but closing is not generally enforced D - Access controlled and lil1ted by a conservation group (such as BCCS) E - Cave closure is enforced by the cave owner N - Cave is closed by the NSS or VAR for conservation reasons and closing
