Dogs are called man’s best friend, but

for some people they are more than that.

Service dogs who assist the disabled, provide comfort to

those in trauma, and even improve reading skills in high schools are being trained every year by the Pacifi c Assistance Dogs Society (PADS), but they would like to do more.

“We can only produce as many dogs as we have funds for,” says Kevin Pidwerbeski, executive dircctor for PADS. “Last year we trained 14 and that was our best year ever.”

Pidwerbeski was visiting the North Island in February to spread the word about the dogs, both for those who need them and those who may sponsor them.

There are currently eight PADS dogs on Vancouver Island. Each one costs more than $70,000 to raise and train but the recipient of the dog pays only $700 and receives a lifetime of training

and support. PADS meets Assistance Dog International standards and is certifi ed by that organization.

The dogs are golden retrievers and labradors specifi cally bred as assistance dogs. The fi rst year they live with a puppy trainer and the second year they are trained to meet the needs of the person they would be paired with.

“Each dog is customized to each client,” says Pidwerbeski. “We carefully match dogs to clients. We are always in touch with the client to make sure

there are no changes in their needs.”

What is special about PADS dogs is the variety of assistance they can provide.

“We actually can

do more with dogs than people realize,” says Pidwerbeski. The dogs can be trained to work with people in wheelchairs, and people with various disabilities such as mulitiple sclerosis, post-polio, spinal cord injuries, and cerebral palsy. As well, PADS has trained trauma dogs to work with police and victims of tragedy. One of these dogs, is currently placed with the Delta police and other police organizations are considering a dog.

A therapy dog named Poppy provides comfort and support to

patients and families at Canuck Place, a hospice for sick children in Vancouver.

And in Coquitlam, one dog is a reading buddy for high school students.

“The teens read to the dog for 30 minutes,” said Pidwerbeski. “The dog doesn’t judge them. It just goes into the down position and listens. We even train the dog to pick a book. The teens really buy into the dog.”

And Pidwerbeski says the school reports positive results since the program began three years ago.. Student confi dence increases, reading skills improve, absenteeism decreases.

While in Port McNeill Pidwerbeski met with School District 85 Director of Instruction Katherine McIntosh and he hopes she will bring the program to the North Island.

“We are looking for partners,” says Pidwerbeski. “Schools, therapist or someone who needs an assistance dog. And we want to get the word out and raise money for the next person.”

The Tsolum River Partnership is seeing bugs and fi sh returning and other signs of renewal at the abandoned Mount Washington Copper Mine.

The Tsolum River watershed is seeing a remarkable transformation after more than 40 years of pollution from an abandoned copper mine on Mount Washington, the partnership announced recently.

Since 2001, a group of environmental NGOs, government agencies, and forestry and mining companies known as the Tsolum River Partnership have been working to clean up the environmental contamination caused by an open-pit mine that was abandoned in 1967.

Located 25 kilometres northwest of Courtenay at an

elevation of 1,500 metres, the mine site had been poisoning the Tsolum River and two of its tributaries for more than 40 years, according to a news release.

Working together, the group secured $4.5 million in provincial funding in 2008.

Two environmental fi rms, Quantum Murray and SRK Consulting, have been leading the cleanup by placing a lining cover over the top of the fi ve-hectare mine site to prevent continued toxic runoff into the Tsolum River.

The lining was covered with organic material to facilitate revegetation and to protect it from long-term weathering and damage.

The planting of new vegetation has been scheduled to be completed by Stantec and Quantum Murray

this year.The Tsolum River

was once home to huge runs of Pacifi c salmon, but years of mining, historical logging and other human activity destroyed vital fi sh habitat, noted the release.

Copper runoff was the single most detrimental legacy, but the protective lining placed on the mine has helped signifi cantly improve water quality in the Tsolum River, according to Jack Minard, executive director for the Tsolum River Restoration Society (TRRS).

He said copper contamination from the mine site has decreased by 77 per cent, and the water quality goals set for the river have been met for the fi rst time in 2010.

“The Tsolum River Partnership is a great example of how much we can achieve when

we all work together to protect B.C.’s vital waterways,” Environment Minister Murray Coell said.

“The province was pleased to commit $4.5 million to help restore the health and productivity of the river so future

Mary-Jane, aged 53, came into

me complaining of not feeling well.

She had been using bio-identical progesterone cream to treat her menopausal symptoms. She had been adjusting her own dosages without taking a break for the past several years. It had been prescribed by a medical doctor but she had had no follow up afterwards. She came in for a naturopathic evaluation.

The fi rst thing I did with her is order a fi ve panel salivary hormone profi le and because her level of fatigue was so great I suggested we also check her adrenal function. The salivary profi le indicates the level of unbound hormone functioning in the body. Her

progesterone levels were at a very high level of 30,000 pg/ml and the higher level of normal is 6000 pg/ml. Her estrogen level was within normal levels but her testosterone and DHEA levels were very high and her adrenal function was very low. This high level of progesterone was confusing the hormone receptors in her body and causing a terrible imbalance.

I explained to her that she needed to take a break from using the progesterone for awhile and support other body systems that are affected by menopause. These include the liver, the thyroid and

the adrenal glands. I explained that the regulation of cortisol, the main hormone of the adrenal gland, is needed for proper thyroid regulation of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH). It is also needed for proper

production of melatonin, important for sleep and waking cycles of the body. Cortisol is also responsible for producing Growth Hormone, the popular anti-

aging hormone. The goal is to balance the stress responses in the body. If there is too much cortisol this promotes infl ammation pathways in the body leading to chronic diseases of aging. Mary-Jane was

complaining of more aches and pains lately indicating increased infl ammation in her body.

To support her adrenal glands I suggested the following:

1. Proper sleep hygiene.

2. Her diet plan was too high in sugar and fat so getting her on a superfood greens drink was an easy way to start changing her taste buds.

3. I started her on some homeopathic drainage remedies to clear out toxins in her liver, kidney and lymphatic system. All medicines work better when the milieu of the extra-cellular fl uid is optimized.

4. I reviewed her basic supplement program to make sure she was getting enough trace minerals, magnesium, essential fats (EFA’s) and B complex.

5. I recommended my favorite adrenal remedies: rhodiola, ashwaganda, pantothenic acid and Siberian ginseng. These were prescribed in therapeutic dosages over 12 months. The adrenal glands are like batteries that need recharging and in this case, third stage of adrenal exhaustion requires extensive therapy.

After the second stage of the treatment program Mary-Jane’s progesterone levels had come down to a more normal range and her hot fl ushes had stopped. Her energy was improving and she was sleeping much better. I now see Mary-Jane once per year. We review her salivary hormone levels, her blood work and do a yearly check up. Mary-Jane was ready for naturopathic medicine. She was ready to make the appropriate changes to optimize her aging body. Are you?

generations can enjoy this beautiful area. I’d like to thank and congratulate all those who helped make this a reality.”

The improved water quality has also shown evidence in encouraging biological recovery of the river.

The aquatic insect population, an important food supply for salmon and trout, has been once again returned to the Tsolum River, leading the way for the return of larger populations of salmon and trout.

“We expect the return of pink and coho salmon to the Tsolum River in concert with the East Coast of Vancouver Island,” said Minard. “Instead of fi sh avoiding the Tsolum River because of

copper toxicity, we have now cleaned the water to the point that fi sh will again return to the Tsolum.”

Early results are encouraging.

In 2009, 40,000 pink salmon returned to the Tsolum River, while cutthroat trout populations also improved. In 2010, more coho were observed returning to the Tsolum than have been seen since 1999. It is estimated that 1,000 coho returned and spawned in the Tsolum in 2010.

With the revegetation plan commencing while other benefi ts of the clean up continue, the copper levels at the mine site and in the Tsolum River should continue to decrease over the next few years while aquatic life begins to thrive,

according to the release.

To continue the rehabilitation of the Tsolum River area, Minard said the partnership has committed to repeat the ongoing monitoring in 2011 and to develop a long-term monitoring strategy for the mine site.

The Tsolum River Partnership includes the Tsolum River Restoration Society, TimberWest Forest Corp., Fisheries and Oceans Canada, the provincial Ministry of Environment, the provincial Ministry of Natural Resources Operations, the Pacifi c Salmon Foundation, the Mining Association of British Columbia, Natural Resources Canada, NVI Mines and Environment Canada.

Embark on an “Adventure of a Lifetime” aboard a working freight boat voyaging along the British Columbia coast.

Operated by Marine Link Tours, the MV Aurora Explorer is a 135-foot landing craft that transports a wide variety of freight throughout the inland

waterways along British Columbia’s beautiful central coastline, providing accommodation for 12 passengers.

On a one-of-a-kind cruise aboard the Aurora Explorer you will meet new friends, savour fantastic cuisine and enjoy the uniqueness of small group cruising while

exploring remote settings. You will enjoy rugged scenery and wildlife sightings, and get in touch with the history of early explorers, settlers and native populations.

Operating out of Menzies Bay, 15 kilometres north of Campbell River, the Aurora Explorer offers passengers ample opportunities to relax, visit and take in the spectacular scenery and ambience from one of three onboard lounges.

A large dining lounge with a nautical and history library of coastal B.C. has large picture windows overlooking the cargo deck. There

is also a lower deck lounge located on the passenger cabin deck, and a bridge deck lounge located in the wheelhouse where passengers can mingle with the captain and crew, while pouring over charts and experiencing fi rsthand the operation of the vessel.

From the outside observation decks, passengers can observe activity on the freight deck, enjoy the passing scenery or simply lie back and soak up the sunshine and salt air. Whenever possible, the vessel will stop to catch fresh prawns and crab or drop a fi shing line over the side for salmon and halibut.

Both passengers and crew share the hearty fare prepared on board. Comfortable accommodations consisting of six staterooms are located on the passenger cabin deck.

Trip packages are three or fi ve days in duration and feature a variety of spectacular coastal locations. Three cruise options are available: the Broughton Island Archipelago, the Discover Islands and the Mystery Cruise Routing.

To reach the Broughton Archipelago Area, the Aurora Explorer makes her way north

Offering an endless maze of channels and islands, the MV Aurora Explorer often branches off further into spectacular Knight Inlet, Kingcome Inlet, Wakeman Sound, Mackenzie Sound and Drury Inlet to complete freight deliveries. the Aurora Explorer may also cruise up the spectacular Bute Inlet. Freight deliveries also usually provide the opportunity to journey and explore into Toba Inlet and the Desolation Sound area before returning home.

Special Mystery Cruise Routings are for those with

adventurous spirits as the captain and crew really cannot predict where the vessel will actually go. The ship will travel where the freight takes her providing passengers the opportunity to view a wider selection of the coast.
