20 YEARS

Scott Noseworthy Scott Noseworthy began his career at MSM under Maurice Baron after a number of years as a first class ship fitter at EB. He has been our Shipyard General Maintenance Supervisor and Lead Sawyer for nearly all of his 20 years. He has helped acquire, process, and store ship timber for all Shipyard projects, including construction of the schooner AMISTAD, restoration of ROANN and the CHARLES W. MORGAN and now MAYFLOWER II, and numerous smaller restoration projects. Scott is also our marine engine Collection Manager, maintaining relationships, organizing and leading our Antique Marine Engine Exposition each summer. He keeps our entire inventory of aged equipment running, moving any and all objects large and small skillfully. He also manages the shipyard volunteer programs and Gung Ho squad, totaling well over 3500 volunteer hours each year. Scott is a vital part of the success of our whole operation.

25 YEARS Fran Muller - Interpretation

After retiring from a long and successful career spent running a construction business, you could say that Fran Muller has been “gone fishing” for the past twenty-five years. But she hasn’t been relaxing– she’s kept on working! As lead interpreter of the L.A. Dunton, Fran has gone on many research trips, conducted numerous oral history interviews, and worked tirelessly to ensure that the stories of the men who lived and worked aboard the Dunton could be shared with future generations. Aside from her work on the Dunton, Fran has interpreted many different exhibits throughout her time here. She is flexible, eager to learn, and always game to try something new. She also always strives to put the visitor first.

Fran, thank you for all that you do to make Mystic Seaport a special place.

Don Sineti - Interpretation Even if you haven’t seen Don Sineti, you’ve probably heard him on a few occasions. His powerful bass-baritone voice has echoed across our museum grounds for the last thirty years. Whether belting out a chantey as the demonstration squad raises a yard, teaching a sea music class to a group of eager students, or singing a classic whaling ballad to a crowd gathered for one of his performances, Don has enriched the lives of thousands of visitors throughout his time at Mystic Seaport. Don is also an award-winning marine illustrator and a passionate advocate for the protection of the marine environment.

Through his music, art, and advocacy, Don has devoted much of his life to helping people develop an enduring connection to the American maritime experience – the very words that guide our work here every day. Any conversation about Don inevitably comes back to his voice – powerful, engaging, and unique. But there’s more to it than that. Consider this quote from the poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow:

O, how wonderful is the human voice! It is indeed the organ of the soul! The intellect of man sits enthroned visibly upon his forehead and in his eye; and the heart of man is written upon his countenance. But the soul reveals itself in the voice only...

Don, thank you for sharing your voice, your heart, and your soul with us for the past twenty-five years.

30 YEARS Doug Butler - Shipyard

Doug Butler began his career here at MSM as mate for George Moffett aboard Schooner Brilliant. He came to

us from Maine where he worked at Wayfarer Marine, served as mate aboard schooner Adventure, and

captained several vessels. When we first began sailing Breck Marshall Doug was her first Captain giving

literally thousands of visitors an in depth experience of the River. By the mid 1990’s Doug had been

promoted to Supervisor of Vessel Maintenance, (running our Paint Shop) where he supervises 5 full time

professionals and a lot of volunteers responsible for the maintenance of our entire fleet. He still occasionally

keeps his hand in by operating one of our vessels as relief Capt. He’s known for his attention to the smallest

detail and abundance of caution. Doug’s gentile management style and his calm disposition are appreciated

by all.

Claire Calabretta - Advancement Over the past three decades Claire Calabretta has managed the process of pursing funding from Federal and State Agencies and private foundations both large and small. Her efforts working in concert with colleagues throughout the organization have yielded many millions of dollars of support for projects of every variety from vessel and building restoration, to exhibitions, education programs and everything in between. Her efforts led to a vital $500,000 commitment from the Northeast Utilities Foundation to support Voyages: Stories of America and the Sea, the signature exhibition launching our transition to Mystic Seaport; The Museum of America and The Sea. Subsequently, she led the effort to secure a very prestigious $1 million dollar matching grant from the Kresge Foundation to help conclude the construction of the Collections Research Center. More recently her efforts along with the good work of many of you here this morning led to a $500,000 NEH Chairman’s Grant for Voyaging in the Wake of the Whalers and programs supporting the 38th Voyage of the Charles W. Morgan. Claire has gained much wisdom over many years and she is held in high regard every colleague who works with her to prepare grant applications. She is a deeply compassionate and caring individual and places a very high value on treating all her collaborators with dignity and respect. In all of her work she practices that old sailors adage of Ship, Shipmate, Self. She always puts Mystic Seaport first, her colleagues next and herself last. It is for all these reasons that she is so deeply admired and appreciated by all of us at Mystic Seaport.

Adele McGuire – Visitor Services

Adele McGuire is someone who literally has a major impact on every department, and on every individual -on any given day at Mystic Seaport. Quite simply she is a wealth of knowledge and had served during critical periods at the museum including: The Building and launching of the Amistad

Brilliant’s circumnavigation of the Northern Atlantic The Evolution to become the Museum of America and The Sea The Opening of the signature exhibition: Voyages: Stories of America and The Sea The Restoration and sailing of the sandbagger Annie The Completion of the James T. Carlton Marine Science Center The Replacement of Brilliant’s deck The Restoration of ROANN Construction of the Collections Research Center Construction of the Hays and Ros Clark Shiplift Restoration and 38th Voyage of the Charles W. Morgan Opening of the exhibit: Voyaging in the Wake of the Whalers Construction of the Thompson Exhibition Building Restoration of the MayFlower II Restoration of the steam boat Sabino …And serving under 4 museum presidents As the main operator at the switchboard Adele McGuire connects artists to curators, emergency personnel to security, donors to the advancement team, politicians to administrators and family members to staff members. And through years of making these connections, Adele has remained steady, confident, professional and polite. During the summer where many of our more youthful staff find it challenging to be out in the heat in a small 3x2 Sabino booth, Adele flourishes as she prepares our guests for their voyage on the Sabino or Liberty. One of the many wonderful things I admite about Adele is that you ask her for advice or for her opinion – she looks you straight in the eye and she tells it like it is but always with a smile.

35 YEARS Ron Lemar – Facilities

Not only does Ron bring over 35 years of practical experience to the carpentry dept he also brings a great deal of historical knowledge based on his time here. He can reflect back on something that was done years ago and provide insight and a different perspective on how something might be done. He is always ready to take on any task without hesitation. Whether it be repairing a broken lock, plowing snow or refinishing the endless stream of benches that pass through the shop Ron never complains. He embraces each challenge and stays with it to completion.

40 YEARS Monica Eppinger – Finance

Monica has worn many hats in her 40 years at the Mystic Seaport. She started, in 1977, working in School reservations , then moved onto Williams-Mystic as a part-time administrative assistant to Ben Labaree. From there, she worked in the cataloging services area, and for the past 22 years has worked with the Finance Department. Kathleen Foulke, her former supervisor, had this to say about Monica: As a colleague, I have always found Monica to be one of those people who forms the glue that binds people closer together. She went out of her way to reach out and get to know others, and had a genuine interest in their lives. Her warm and friendly nature helped the rest of the staff and volunteers, formerly part of four separate collection areas, make the transition to the blended work environment of our [then] new Cataloging Services team. Kathleen went on to say that the quality of Monica's work was always excellent and her attention to detail was exemplary, often catching things that others had missed or noticing discrepancies that needed to be corrected. This attention to detail has served her well in the Finance Department as well. This, combined with her initiative, flexibility and a keen interest in learning, has made Monica a true asset to Mystic Seaport.

BIOSPHERE 2 - MOVIE Williams-Mystic presents a free movie showing followed by Q&A with the Director & Executive Producer, Dr. Shawn Rosenheim, the Williams-Mystic resident fellow. Join us at the Carlton Science Center on Tuesday, March 6 at 6:00 PM for the showing of:

BIOSPHERE 2

High in the Arizona desert sits a mysterious compound of gleaming, futuristic buildings that contains a closed ecosystem – a miniature planet under glass. This is Biosphere 2 – the most perfectly sealed structure ever built by man and for twenty years one of Arizona’s leading tourist attractions. Here, Earth’s many biomes exist side by side, put there by man: a tropical jungle, marsh, saltwater ocean, desert, living quarters, and more. In September 1991, a crew of eight men and women were sealed inside Biosphere 2, beginning one of the strangest experiments in scientific history. No human had ever lived in a totally self-sustaining world for more than a few days. The Biosphere crew planned to live inside for two years, raising their own food, and recycling every molecule of their air and water. Could the crew survive, balancing the intricate relationships

of the 4000 species of plants and animals locked up with them, and with whom they shared a single atmosphere? Could they survive living with each other? Incorporating never-before-seen footage, Biosphere 2 tells the inside story of one of the most suggestive science experiments of our time. WELCOME PATRICK FORD

Please join me in welcoming our new Special Collections Librarian, Patrick Ford, to the Museum. Patrick comes to us from his most recent position at the Maine Historical Society after doing stints at MIT and elsewhere. His background in working with rare book and other collection types will be a real benefit to the G.W. Blunt White Library and our many users and we are very happy to have him join our team. -Paul O’Pecko

FIRST THURSDAY

Once again, we extend many thanks to Paul Goodwin for an entertaining, historic presentation. This time his research gave us a surprising look at ups and downs of the Guano trade and all of the worldwide implications that accompanied this industry. Our April 5th First Thursday is entitled: In Pursuit of Programming with Libby Daly, Manager of Membership Programs. What do racing an America’s Cup yacht, acquiring security clearance to explore an island shrouded in myth, and meeting an Antarctic explorer have in common? Any of these experiences could be just another day at the office if you are the manager of membership programming at Mystic Seaport. Join Libby Daly as she shares highlights from her first year at the helm of membership programming. Get an insider’s look at Adventure Series, member trips, member tours, and more!
