In December 2009 two persons of the FLAAR staff, together with FLAAR director, attended a special three-day 3D scanner training course at Z Corp, where they learned how to handle the portable ZScanner 800 and how to process the data from it. They came back to Guatemala with a ZScanner 800 and a HP laptop with one licensed copy of Geomagic installed; both lent from Z Corp for 90 days.

This report shows the processing of a mayan censer.

This censer was scanned at the Museo VIGUA de Arte Precolombino y Vidrio moderno, which is situated in Hotel Casa Santo Domingo in Antigua Guatemala.

Our team made several scans of the censer, because this was a difficult piece both to scan and to process. So, we selected these scans to create the entire censer.

We first clean up all the scans to make it easier to register them.

To register the scans, select all of them and go to Tools > Registration > Manual Registration. Now the viewing area is divided in three. Fromthe left panel we select one scan to be fixed and one to be floating. The bottom frame shows how the scans are being aligned.

To make the registration points we move the fixed and floating objects until they are in the same angle and just click in the same spots as shown above. The registration points are indicated with a number, in this case: 1.

All of the registration points are made by choosing the same spots in both the fixed and the floating scan. You can see how the scans in the bottom frame get aligned to each other with each registration point. Event hough the scans look aligned at the third registration point it is better to make more registration points so that the scans are well aligned from all sides.

We used nine registration points for the first two scans as you can see in the images above.

The image to the right shows the frame after clicking Register.

Since there are more scans to register we click on Next, and the procedure is the same. The scans that are already aligned appear now in Group 1. We left Group 1 as fixed and choose another scan to add.

This bottom image shows the first registration point for registering the third scan.

We used seven registration points to register the third scan. You can see in these images where the registration points were put and how the scans mix better with every registration point. After making the registration points we click Register and then Next to continue withthe following scan.

To register the next scan the procedure is the same. The three scans that are already aligned appear in Group 1. We left Group 1 as fixed and choose another scan as floating.

This image shows the first registration point for registering the fourth scan.

We used seven registration points to register the fourth scan. You can see in these images where the registration points were put and how the scans mix better with every registration point.

After making the registration points we click Register and then Next to continue with the following scan.

We repeat the same procedure one more time. The above image shows the first registration point of the fifth scan.

The images above show the registration points we made for the fifth scan.

This was the fifth scan we registered. The image to the left shows the eighth registration point and the image to the right shows the scans after clicking Register. At the end, since thi is the last scan we wanted to add, we just click OK.

The image shows the object after registration. The scans are still separated in the carpet called Group 1, the green lines shows the border ofeach scan. the next step would be to apply Merge.

This is the censer after applying merge. The green lines indicate the border of the object, as you can see there are a lot of holes and missing areas that the scanner could not capture because of the complexity of this artifact.

This is the view of the merged scans from the side.

This is the view of the merged scans from the back. As you can see there is a lot of work to do to make this a closed object.

In this close up you can see that there are a lot of areas that need to be worked on.

First we applied the Mesh Doctor tool. The red spots indicate the areas where there are some sort of mesh trouble, and as you can see there are a lot.

This is the result after applying the Mesh Doctor tool. As you can see the surface is smoother now. But there are still a lot of missing spots that we filled out with the Fill Holes tool.

Several of the missing parts were created by going through each hole and filling it out with the different features of the Fill Holes tool. The image above shows how the Fill Partial feature was used.

The image to the left shows how the Create Bridges feature was used with the option of flat fill type. If we had used the just the Fill feature it would have been filled out in a different way that was not desired. After that we used the Fill feature to fill out the spaces between the bridges, as it is shown in the image to the right.

This image show how with the Fill Partial feature a large surface like this can be covered by applying it several times on the direction we desire.

After a lot of patience we were able to create the surface of the missing areas by using the different features of the Fill Holes tool.

Here are different views of the censer so you can see how the surface was completed.

Even though the results are not accurate, it is possible to recreate a large amount of missing areas to have a closed object that can be printed in 3D later.

There were still some tiny holes, so we applied the fill Holes tool with the default settings.

To give it a more realistic look we applied color to the artifact.

This is the censer after applying color to all of it.

We changed the shiny surface for a more opaque surface like the one of the actual censer. When we did that, we realized that there were some white spots at the top, so we went back to Edit Colors to correct this.
