First of all I am sure our thoughtsand prayers are with the people ofChristchurch after such a devastatingEarthquake struck their city.
I guess this is a timely reminder forus all to be prepared for the 'big one' bykeeping an emergency kit on hand athome. The kit should be stocked withspare supplies of extra drinking water, canned food, a cooker, first aid kit, torch, radio, spare batteries, toiletpaper, plastic bags, a bucket, and dustmasks and face masks. A list of allthese items can be found on the insideback cover of your local phone book.
Also, it is a good idea to keep spareclothes and blankets on hand. All thiscan be stored in a plastic storage box, which can be bought from the likes ofthe Warehouse or the Plastic BoxStores. And of course it is always agood idea to have a vege gardenstocked with year round vegetables toprovide extra food if needed. In REBS news, we have received aLion Foundation Grant of $5000 whichis to be used to help pay for Peter'swages as the Rebs Membership Co-ordinator. We are also currentlyapplying to the Trusts CommunityFoundation for the sum of $3,300:$900 for Eco Products and $2,400 formembership expansion promotion.
Also, Subs are due. Please pay theseas soon as possible, as we need yoursubs to help make Rebs function. It issuch a small amount to pay to keepa great organisation like REBS goingstrong!
Happy Trading,Mark Kennedy

all live?…A local currency is central to theTransition plan. ‘Think of a leaky bucket,…any time we spend money with abusiness that's got more links outside thecommunity than in it, we leak moneyfrom the local economy. What localcurrency does is allow that wealth tobounce around in that bucket.”http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2011/feb/06/totnes-transition-towns-ethical-livingAnd talk of a regional currency right here inAustral-asia. Not quite an alternativecurrency, but interesting nonetheless:Businesses keen on common economiczone“Many New Zealand businesses think theidea of a trans-Tasman currency andeconomic zone is hot… MYOB's businessmonitor surveyed over 1000 localbusinesses on possible policies ahead ofthis year's election and the concept of acommon economic zone and currencywith Australia garnered one of the mostsurprising responses…Forty-two per centof Kiwi business owners surveyed werein favour of the concept”http://www.stuff.co.nz/business/small-business/4636561/Businesses-keen-on-common-economic-zoneAnd finally, an alternative currency I couldreally buy into, a system developed by somecreative youths in the U.K.:Fruit is becoming 'alternativecurrency' in youth prison TheIndependent - Monday, 31 January2011“Children in young offender institutionsin England and Wales are often givenpoor-quality food, leaving some sodesperate for healthy meals that fruit hasbecome an alternative currency in oneprison…Young offenders are able topurchase additional food, including bagsof fruit, from prison shops... Some boysbulk-buy fruit and exchange it for phonecards.”http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/fruit-is-becoming-alternative-currency-in-youth-prison-2199012.htmlPerhaps the end of summer is not the time toset up a fruit-based exchange system, withpeaches and nectarines in surplus right now.But during the winter I could see this currencyrivaling REBS in value. Happy Trading!
Local CurrencyNews Bytes: By Dani LeboOver the past few months the global economyhas ridden a roller coaster ride of spiking andeasing prices on everything from oil, tocurrencies, food commodities. While this hasled to lack of confidence in major economicsystems, it has also led to rising interest inLocal Exchange and Barter Systems andAlternative Currencies.I thought I might give a glimpse at some recentnews stories that centre on alternativecurrencies and local exchange and bartersystems. Here’s one from the New York Times:Amid Recession, A Return To BarteringThe New York Times - December 8, 2010“The concept of bartering often conjuresan aura of myth: Jack’s storied magicbeans,… [but] in the wake of the recession, bartering has captured a renewed interestamong the cash-strapped or habituallythrifty…The hope is that not only willpeople benefit from an experienceachieved through cashless means, but thatthey’ll also widen their career circles aswell.”http://eastvillage.thelocal.nytimes.com/2010/12/08/amid-recession-a-return-to-bartering/And another from the U.S.:Slow Money’s Gaining MomentumThe Concord Patch - February 1, 2011“Imagine if you could buy a cup of coffeefrom Starbucks in your town at a discountwith local community money…The conceptof local dollars isn’t new and was usedbriefly during the depression to stimulatespending in local communities. SlowMoney, founded by Woody Tausch, ismodeled on the 20-year old slow foodmovement and promotes investing in smallfood enterprises and local food systems. Italso focuses on connecting investors totheir local economies...”http://concord.patch.com/articles/slow-moneys-gaining-momentumAnd here’s one from across the pond:Totnes: Britain's town of the future TheGuardian - Sunday 6 February 2011“Totnes in Devon might be the mostforward-thinking eco settlement in theworld. As fossil-fuel reserves dwindle andthe economy contracts, will resident-ledTransition Towns become the way that we
