Firm FoundationsEdward Mote was born in 1797 inLondon. His parents managed apub and so he was often left to hisown devices. He didn’t have theadvantage of early exposure toScripture since his parentswouldn't allow a Bible in theirhouse, and so the young Edwardspent most of his Sundays playingin the city streets. He himself said"So ignorant was I that I did notknow that there was a God." At the age of sixteen, he was taken by his boss to hear the esteemedp r e a c h e r, John Hyatt, of the Tottenham Court Chapel. Here youngEdward was genuinely converted to Christ. One morning in 1834 as Edward Mote was walking to work, it enteredhis mind to write a hymn. By the time he got to work, he had the chorusand during the day he wrote the verses, which were to become one of themost famous hymns of all time:

My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus' blood and righteousness;I dare not trust the sweetest frame, but wholly lean on Jesus' name.On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand; all other ground is sinking sand.

His oath, His covenant, and blood support me in the whelming flood; When every earthly prop gives way he then is all my Hope and Stay.On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand; all other ground is sinking sand.

Edward Mote’s life was transformed by the time and love given to himby a dedicated teacher. This month, on 20th Marc h, we will becelebrating “Education Sunday”. Education Sunday is a national day ofprayer and celebration for everyone involved in the world of education. For more than 100 years there has been an annual recognition ofEducation Sunday in England and Wales. education is laying the foundations needed for life. Education Sundayo ffers us a chance to think further about this. Jesus Christ is thefoundation and whether we are educators at school, church or home weneed to build with regard to our faith. So what ‘materials’ might we use? The Sermon on the Mount suggestsvalues that run counter to cultural norms, which offer children and youngpeople a perspective on life that encompasses compassion, forg i v e n e s sand generosity. But education – in whatever context – also needs to buildc h i l d r e n ’s spiritual lives as well as their intellect and moral capacity.Space for God to break through – and space for children and youngpeople to glimpse the Divine - needs to have its place in the buildingblueprint, to give them a chance to glimpse holiness. Awe, wonder andcuriosity contribute to a child’s spiritual growth and flourishing. We omitthem at our peril. On solid foundations, children and young people, created in the image ofGod, can fashion their unique identity and flourish in their humanp o t e n t i a l .The 3rd Sunday of the month at Holy Trinity Church, Chrishall is ourregular opportunity for the whole Church family to worship together atour all-age service. It is a service that will, literally, appeal to people ofall ages, so why not take the opportunity to come along on 20th Marc h?Members of Staff from Chrishall School will be joining us, giving us alla great opportunity to show our support and love for them and theirvocation, skills and care in shaping young lives. We can also look back inthankfulness for those who helped to build the firm foundations in ourown lives, allowing us to grow in faith and understanding and enablingus, like Edward Mote to say “On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand; all otherg round is sinking sand.”

With every blessing,

The Kairos ProjectThe term "kairos" is used in theology to describe thequalitative form of time. In the New Testament kairosmeans "the appointed time in the purpose of God", the time when God acts(e.g. Mark 1.15, the kairos is fulfilled). It differs from the more usual wordfor time which is chronos (kronos). The Kairos Project in Chrishall is theresult of a shared vision between our Anglican Icknield Way Parish and thelocal Methodist Circuit as to how we use the Methodist Church building inthe future. We have been given the vision that the Methodist Church building, whilstno longer a place of regular Methodist worship, should be a vehicle bywhich we can share God’s love and extend God’s work in our community. To effect this, we are working together to transform the Church into a multi-purpose venue to facilitate community outreach as part of our response tothe Good News of Jesus Christ, alongside the community events currentlytaking place in the hall.Consequently, the Church is in the process of having some internalalterations and is now the home for our Parish Church youth work (alsocalled Kairos) and Church Mice (our pre-school group). Other activitiesstarting there are a Community Choir (which meets on Tuesday eveningsfrom 7:30pm-8:30pm) and a twice-monthly after-school club (The One-WayClub) for primary school children. In the future, we plan to add other activities such as film evenings, concerts, worship for young families and music workshops to name but a few.So please keep your eyes open for further news regarding other KairosProject activities taking place at Chrishall Methodist Church – it may beGod’s appointed time for you to get involved in something...

Spring Term 2011 is well underwayat Chrishall Primary and we continueto provide a rich and variedcurriculum, which the children reallyenjoy. Happy and inspired childrenare motivated learners! Fortunatelythe weather has not prevented usfrom doing any of our plannedactivities especially with all thedevelopments in our outdoorclassroom, and in particular theweekly Forest School for Receptionchildren. They have had to learn todress up very warmly to cope withthe weather, and as you can see in thephoto on the cover, enjoy a widevariety of activities including at themoment lots of mud! This term all children will beinvolved in dance displays with otherschools. Key Stage 1 will go toRickling primary school and KeyStage 2 to Saffron Walden CountyHigh School. Years 3 and 4 arecreating a dance with the theme ofspace and Year 5 and 6 are using thevery topical subject of ‘ExtremeWeather’!Writing remains one of our keypriority areas and in ClassGrasshopper (years 5 and 6) theyhave been writing graphic novels to

re-tell a classic Greek myth. Also ontheir topic of Greece they have madeand painted Greek pots, one of whichyou can see in the photograph. Thechildren in Year 2 have paintedbeautiful self-portraits, whichillustrate ourdiversity. As a school wework closelywith the churchand are fortunatethat our vicar, curate and layreader are ableto come in andlead assemblies in school. We alsohave visits from the Saffron WaldenAssembly team who are members ofdifferent places of worship in SaffronWalden.Another aspect of our involvementwith the local community is our Ecosquad’s link with the parish council.Children have created posters topersuade people not to drop litter andthe council will be choosing whichone to display in the village ofChrishall. The Parish council and theEco squad are planning a litter pick inChrishall during the summer term.We welcome visitors to school so ifyou have any skills or experiencesyou would like to share with thechildren please do contact us.

On Thursday 20th January Harvey Thomas, close aide to Margaret Thatcher,John Major, Billy Graham and others came along to talk to us at a Men’sSupper at the home of Christine and Marcus West in Chrishall. At 02:54 on 12th October 1984, The Grand Hotel on Brighton's seafront wasripped apart by a massive bomb blast. The device was planted by theProvisional IRA, it was their intention to assassinate the Prime Minister andher Cabinet during their stay at the hotel during the Party Conference. Whilstthe plot failed in its attempt on the lives of the PM and the Cabinet members, there were 5 fatalities including MPs, officials and their partners. Thirty fourcasualties recovered after being taken to hospital. Some of these becamepermanently disabled like Margaret Tebbit, wife of Norman Tebbit the thenPresident of The Board of Trade. One of those that recovered was Harvey Thomas. Harvey was MargaretThatcher's Communications Director and worked closely with her throughouther term of office. At the time of the blast he was resting in his room, afterbeing given a few hours off by Mrs T. His suite was immediately above theroom where the device was situated (which was planted some weeks beforewith a long delay timer). The explosion forced him and his surroundingsupwards through the roof. When the dust settled Harvey found himself trappedunder debris on a steel girder, which was balanced precariously above the 5storey void which was all that remained of the centre of the hotel.Harvey talked to us about this time, how close he felt he was to death beforehe was rescued and the difficulties faced afterwards in realising that so manyof his friends and colleagues had suffered. Harvey's faith in God helped himthroughout this traumatic time and led him some 14 years later to meet thebomber and offer his forgiveness. He explained that the desire and ability toforgive those that sin against each of us is both a very personal thing and alsosometimes a very difficult step to take. And yet Jesus calls us to do so...

Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those that sin against us Matthew 6 v 12

Whilst not condoning his actions, Harvey felt a need to forgive Patrick Mageeand did so. They have subsequently become friends through these unlikelycircumstances.

A huge note of thanks to Christine & Marcus West for opening their home tous and to all those who provided for the supper.

Mother Julian of NorwichIn the fourteenth century life was not easy. Scotland,England and France were continually at war, one withanother. About the middle of the century the BlackDeath appeared in China, spread across Europe andreached England, killing in total about 75 millionpeople. The climate was very cold at times; there wasa mini Ice Age which made life very difficult and foodscarce. Times were turbulent. In the 1380’s three people were writing books.Geoffrey Chaucer down in Kent was writing acollection of stories which he called the Canterbury

Tales. John Wyclif was working on the first translation of the Bible intoEnglish and Mother Julian was writing “the first book known to be written bya woman”, walled up in a small cell in Norwich. This is all rather odd because the production of paper had not really started yetand it would be another 100 years before the first printing press in England.Added to which, English people in one part of the country could not alwaysunderstand the speech of those in other parts. The Celts, the Danes and theNormans had all affected some areas, and scholars and the Church took refugein Latin. What a time to write a book! What is really remarkable is that her book is fullof optimism. She was born in 1342 and fell ill when she was just over thirty –very ill indeed – and in a state that could well be near death she had a series ofsixteen visions which convinced her that she was “enfolded in love” by aloving creator who wished her well in every way and that love was extended toall of us.She became an “anchoress”. She was walled up in a small cell built on theside of St Julian’s church in Norwich. Her cell had three windows, one intothe church, one into the churchyard, so that people could talk to her, and onegiving access to a servant. The Bishop would have sealed her in with a smallceremony, and she would not leave her cell until death (probably after 1429,when she would be 77).St Julian’s was built in the merchant’s area, near the river. Her family name isnot known, everybody called her Mother Julian because she was linked to thechurch of that name. Although walled up she was not isolated, she had manyvisitors from the town and further afield.

March Village Web 21/2/11 4:20 pm Page 12

Page 13: March 2011 Village Web

The cell is now rebuilt on the old ruined foundations and you can visit it todayas a tiny chapel from inside the church, which lies in Rouen Road in Norwich, about half a mile south of the Cathedral. Alongside it is a room with a smalllibrary, books and keepsakes for sale, and cups of tea and cakes are available. There is a nearby car park opposite. Her book was copied by hand by admirers and three manuscript copies stillexist. One is in the Paris National Library, two others in the British Librarywhere there is also a shorter manuscript version. When printing arrived it wasprinted in London in 1670.Her book is long, but a collection of her sayings translated into modernEnglish and laid out as daily readings is available, titles “Enfolded in Love”and costing £2.50.She is remarkable and worth reading. Her most quoted saying is typical:“All shall be well,And, all shall be well, (repeated)*And all manner of things shall be well” (and again!)*Mother Julian had found love.

Budget Cuts - April 2011You may have seen Chrishall school mums speaking on Anglia News,in February, expressing their grave concerns over Essex CountyCouncil budget cuts, which mean that from April children as young asage 4 and 5 years will be expected to travel to and from school by buswithout an escort. The escort currently secures seat belts and ensuresthat a good standard of behaviour is maintained on the journey, thusallowing the driver to concentrate on the important task of ensuring thatour children are driven to school safely. Parents concerned for theirchild’s safety may drive to school, adding to the the level of congestionin the roads around the school. If you would like to add your name to apetition, go to www.gopetition.com/petition/42967.html or express yourviews in writing to Essex County Council (Cllr Castle) and our MP, SirAlan Hazelhurst. Plea to the CommunityRecently we have noticed that a large number of fencing posts in our boundaryfence on the meadow are missing or broken. We think that they have beenkicked out after school or at weekends either accidentally during a game or onpurpose. We are also very disappointed that the log seats in the wood wherewe hold Forest School each week have been thrown into the nearby pond andthe bird feeders and children's natural sculptures broken. Obviously we arereally sad about this thoughtless vandalism, the wood is private property, kindly loaned to us by a local farmer, and our fence is an important boundary, especially when children first come to school aged 4. Please could thecommunity be vigilant when they are on the meadow so that who ever is doingthis damage is deterred. Sharon Williams
