New Social Event Friday 11th MayLast year we made attempts to organise a social evening and the notice in thecaravan showed support from members and families totalling 27. That was

good enough but due to pub problems nothing happened. The committeedecided we should do this asap, at the Six Bells, Newdigate, a provisionalbooking of 25/30 was made. As we intended this to be a members and familysocial evening, a quiz night was to follow the meal from the choices offeredwhich are :

One course £8.00Two courses £11.00 Main and pudding or starter

Main course choices: lasagne, ham, egg and chips, macaroni cheesePudding choices : crumble, sticky toffee pudding, ice creamStarter choices : Soup, goats cheese salad, thai fishcakes

The quiz after will only appertain to Horsham Riders and motor cycles for afew questions, the next as a normal pub quiz.As the moment the pub is not doing skittles so this is a new venture, and wehope it will be a success that can be built on. PLEASE MAKE AN EFFORTTO GIVE IT THE SUPPORT OF YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS!

These well known members names were on my list : Tim, Fiona, Mike, Dick,Ian Mc, Adrian H, John P, Ray M, Pete B, Nigel B, John Y, Brian B, Mick D, JohnC – if they and YOU all come we guarantee a good evening! Please let Dickor Fiona know if you are coming!

COMMITTEE MEETING 16TH FebruaryOther than the items covered above by Dick, the following werediscussed/agreed :

Working Parties – These are planned for July at Mannings Heath andNovember at Rome or Northlands depending on what is required to be done.

Trials Formats – We decided to run the 1 route trial in April again, but thistime only 1 route, no confusing colours added. It will be a special Charity ClubTrial plus special test. Adults £15.00 Schoolboys same as usualWe also discussed a reverse trial in September – ie trial is ridden one waybefore lunch and then backwards afterwards – could be interesting – CheckNewsletter/website to see if this is going to happen.

Practice Trials – John C kindly agreed to organise these again – so thanksto him – he also attended the Committee meeting on his birthday! – that’sdedication.

Equipment – some punches are deteriorating a bit, we may order somemore – please ensure that you hang these up after punching your card – tostop them getting wet and muddy – and also if team leaders can clean aftertrial and maybe spray with a bit of WD40 that will help keep them in goodcondition.

Page 3: March 2012 Club News

AGM – Thursday 12th April at Six Bells Newdigate – all welcome!!

Other Social Events – We hope to run a mountain bike ride in July(Saturday) – Clint would run this, dates to be confirmed. Also Tim plans torun a road ride probably in August – any ideas for destination will beconsidered. It was agreed that for next year could be a good idea to have theroad run to the Saturday Practice day of the GP.

Other Land – Ray M had found another bit of land for trials at Rudgwick, however the landowner wanted £10 per rider, which when you add the AMCAinsurance is fairly expensive – but thanks Ray for looking into it.

Teams – we discussed mixing teams up so that they could lay out on differentland at different times of the year – problem is that some people particularlylike the time that they have and don’t want to change while others do. If anyteam really wants a change, why not ask another team leader if they wouldswap and let Adrian H know

NICE SECTIONS – PITY IT RAINED! Northlands 4th MarchFragmented, the only way to describe the Enfield team, so it was all left toSean P and Graham K. Mike put a route in on Friday when it was quite dry,he asked for extra route arrows which made matters worse later on. On

Saturday it rained for acouple of hours as S & Glaid out, they wereaware of the evil fore-cast for Sunday. Theydidn’t have a bike out tillSunday am by when thesite was awash, thenthey eased off route andsections for some timeand hoped! In vain Ifear as at the end 80%of yellow route ridershad given up, not neces-sarily due to the sec-tions (which could bemissed) but mainly theroute which, due to cam-

bers, most said they couldn’t get round. Some were retiring after 30 mins.White and Blue didn’t have it easy either with halfway scores of 92 and 109 –is that a record?

But it was all pleasurable delight at the signing on until Team Manager AdrianH enters waving lists and giving me so many instructions, I appeared

Page 4: March 2012 Club News

disorganised to the extent thatIan J commented “when Ijoined the queue entry feeswere a fiver, look what they arenow!” Sam and Joe D handedin a splendid trophy for the

“Crash of the Month” which wastopped with a grim skull. Laterit could have been awarded toJohn P who’d endured a dip inthe stream while somersaultingover the bars, his hat overtak-ing to land on the other bank.John complained that the pho-tographer standing by didn’tcapture this spectacle for inclu-sion on the back page montageof crashes in our glossy issue!

Rob English handed in a fewcopies of the AAH Horshammagazine that visited the lasttrial at MH last year, they gaveus a good write up and manypictures over 4 pages of report. If you’re interested to see go to

www.aahorsham.co.uk . Next in Bob and Garry Budgen, Bob is 70, hasn’tridden for many years and only lasted 3 sections this time “I’m unfit” he says.Harry R was first of the social visitors – he can get his hands on 80 cabledrums and wanted to know if HR wanted some. Further social visitors Pete,Benge, the Chairman etc, but John C didn’t ride, his back was troubling himafter a car rammed his rear axel. But he’s brought his bike to lend to PeteBowker, then said he could hear it being revved out in the mud. By noon therain was falling heavily, at least 8 had retired and Harry R said when it’s likethis we should think “abandon the event to save the site”. Needless to saythe ‘on the spot’ reporter sat in the clubhouse.

Sean did his last lap on Whites – he was surprised how much better the gripwas, no surprise that he led by a wide margin with Tony F and Mick R 30marks away. Phil W handed his cards in “I’ve beaten Tony today” – he didn’t,but his near 100 looks good. Our up and coming youngsters Tom B and SamD continue to impress and stay within a few points of each other. The nextback to ache was Clint’s which stopped him at 2 laps, where we found riderswho’d completed one card (2 laps) we included their totals in the resultsthough of course they DNF.

Page 5: March 2012 Club News

Blues only had 5 entries to start with, Tim H with his brand new tyreproduced a lead over Graham K, Stuart E was improved over recent eventsbut it looks like Mike H had a real hard time and well done for finishing.

Yellow – Nigel B must have benefited from that late grip too as here he isahead of John Y by 10 points. Add 30 more there’s Mick D and Gary Sseparated by 2 marks after all that slog – and that’s it with 15 dnfs behindthem, finishers deserve their bad backs!

AT THE ENDTom Bray reports that a big tree narrowly missed him – wouldn’t have beena 5. Mick R went in the stream on his last lap, stood talking said it felt likegoing back to childhood as the water reached his socks. Several membershad difficulties getting their cars our during the day but the best are alwayskept till last. John C went with his van to extract Rob E who’d been stuck foran hour. Kieran and Gordon’s transit had no chance of going home so Johnhad to tow it out rear first. His 4 WD is spinning, sudden grip, rapid forwardmotion, stop, transit doesn’t – bang! Then Nigel in 4WD which needs tyresto pull his trailer out, that cam off, T5 shunts and spins before he goes home!

Finally top marks for the perseverance shown by Graham and Sean for settingup endless amendments and clearing up in the worst bit of weather we’ve hadfor ages as a trial.RESULTS
