Anna Spiers, Principal Alison Mungavin and Hayley Lanyon check out the new app.

Ashfield Girls SCHOOLIn Touch with Technology!

School App - Ashfield Girls’ High School has become the first school, locally, to launch its own smart phone app. The app, which is free of charge on iPhone and Android enables parents to stay in touch with school, keep up-to-date with term dates, news and events. Information will now be automatically available on their mobile device. Show My Homework The launch of the new app coincides with the school being the first in N Ireland to pilot Show My Homework - a simple, online homework calendar which allows teachers to set homework in advance and, more importantly, enables parents to monitor which homeworks are being set-and completed! Teachers post homeworks to the school calendar, and to the student’s calendar which appear on the student’s to do list. Once completed, the student can remove them. GCSE Pod Another exciting and innovative initiative which the school has invested in is GCSEPod which consists of over 3,500 audio-visual podcasts to aid learning and revision at GCSE level. This too is acces-sible on mobile device and tablets as well as PCs and it enables students to create personal podcast playlists to listen to in the run-up to exams or to help with home-work. Consistent use in just 10 minute chunks is proven to support achievement right up to A* With the publica-tion of their smart phone app, Show My Homework and GCSEPod, Ashfield Girls’ High School demonstrates that it is confident with the new technology to aid learning and revision-as well as communication-and is encourag-ing its pupils and parents to be confident too. Principal, Alison Mungavin says, ‘Ashfield Girls constantly seeks to improve learning opportunities for its girls and these new innovations will support both pupils and parents.”

Health & BeautyBY THEEXPERTS

Spring is in the Air!Try these simple spring beauty tips to reboot and jump start your beauty routine...

1.Bring in the New

Discard any out of date products,

whether it is face, body or make

up. Out of date products are of no

benefit to you and can leave skin

looking tired and lifeless, even

though you feel you are putting the

effort in.

2.Amp up your sun protection

The long dark days of winter are behind us and even though we won’t be seeing that much sun for a while, the harmful rays can still damage our skin. Pick a moisturiser with an SPF or add a low sunscreen into you routine.

3.Ready to bare all

A great at home exfoliant for

your body is oil and sea salt, mix

1/3 oil 2/3 sea salt, use twice a

week (avoiding your face) for well

nourished, sun ready skin.

4.Lighten Up

Winter is perfect for dramatic, heavy make up but with spring on the way, now is the perfect time to experiment with new foundations and colours. Try mineral or cream based foundations for a more natural, glowing appearance. The use of bronzers and highlighters can add the perfect touch of colour to lift your skin into spring.

5.Look After Yourself

This is not just for spring! A salon

treatment will always give you that

boost to look after yourself, whether

it is a facial or a body treatment ,

you will be enthused to reboot your

routine and keep it going!

6.Mother’s Day

Why not spoil your mum this Mother’s Day with the

perfect gift... a gift voucher for a beauty treatment

of her choice? Just quote “Bloom” and you will

receive an amazing 25% off your gift voucher!

Members from the Slimming World groups

in Knocknagoney and Holywood, which

are held every Wednesday and Thursday

evenings at 5.30pm and 7.30pm, are taking part in

a national Slim for Good campaign running across

all 11,000 Slimming World groups in the UK and

Ireland. The aim of the six-week drive is to help

people to lose weight and improve their health while

raising money for a good cause in their local area.

Michelle Murray and Sally Moore, who run the

groups, say the Slim for Good campaign will give

members of the group an added incentive to achieve

their weight-loss dreams. They said, “New Year’s

resolutions can often become a bit of a distant

memory by now and the motivation that you might

have had at the start of January can begin to dip.

If anyone’s feeling that way, we are hoping getting

sponsored to slim will give them the lift they need.

When it’s a cause close to your heart, it’s even more

of a push. We know that making healthy lifestyle

changes to the way you eat and your activity levels

makes a big difference to you, including improving

your health and confidence, but it also impacts on

your family and friends too as they enjoy the ‘new

you’ and often get encouraged to also become

healthier themselves.

Now, thanks to Slim for Good, members will also

be able to benefit their wider local community by

raising funds for their group’s chosen charity. Their

weight-loss will literally become their charity’s

gain! As a consultants we are also inviting other

people in the local community to join our groups

slimmers in their fundraising bid. If you’ve struggled

with your weight for a long time, then making that

decision to take control and slim down can be a

big one but hopefully knowing that every pound

you lose will go towards helping a good cause and

will be a great incentive to make that step. And we

would assure anyone who’s thinking about losing

weight that Slimming World is the very best way to

get started. Not only will you be able to follow a

simple healthy eating plan that means you’ll never

have to go hungry and be able to enjoy hundreds

of healthy foods like fruit and veg, pasta, rice, lean

meat, fish and more without weighing, counting

and measuring, you’ll also get the best support to

develop healthy habits for life and overcome any

potential pitfalls in your journey so you really can

lose weight and keep it off for good. So, by the end

of the six-week campaign you could be nearly a

stone lighter and on your way to a slimmer, happier,

healthier you.”

...And slim for good!A group of big-hearted slimmers from Holywood and Knocknagoney are doing their bit for the local

community and their own health by taking part in a sponsored slim to raise money for charity.

T he charity has developed a range of services for fami-lies, children, young people

and vulnerable adults, which now involves partnership working with the Public Health Agency for counselling services, SEELB for youth activities, SEHSCT for their children’s After School Club and with the Department for Social De-velopment to increase community development in the locality. The three key aims are:1. Promoting health and well-being of individuals and families.2. Providing high quality childcare and youth activities.3. Helping disadvantaged people make healthier choices by provid-ing learning opportunities and by training our volunteers. The dream 10 years ago was that a centre and a network of people would exist in the North Down and Ards area that are equipped to “make a difference” in the lives of individuals and families whilst contributing to a more inclusive

community. Ten years later, HFT now offers over 1000 hours of counselling services per year through Community & Fam-ily Counselling, childcare for 60 families through Holywood After School Club, youth activities for over 200 young people in Zone, a befriending service called ‘Philia’ and various educational projects to the local community whilst train-ing their staff and volunteers . Over the years HFT has been involved in various “good relations” activi-ties and is currently developing a schools based programme which explores diversity and community relations issues affecting young people that are often avoided whilst mentoring young leaders from across the community divide. As a part of the “faithworks” movement, the charity values providing inclusive services to the entire community in a professional manner and in a way which is consistent with its Christian ethos.Paul Betts, Director of HFT said

“Since launching HFT we have seen many people helped and enjoyed the favour and good will of the entire community including the support of the PSNI, NDBC, local churches etc. There has been significant development and expansion of all our services from children’s and youth work, to an increase in counselling services. We are delighted, that thanks to support from the Department for Education and Holywood CFC, we will be commencing building work on a new youth facility dur-ing 2014. The expansion of our youth work over the last couple of years has meant that we need a larger space with improved disa-bled access and catering facilities. HFT has a dedicated team of staff and volunteers to whom we are indebted and a strong network of agencies exists and works in partnership with HFT. Whilst a lot of work is still needed, we are grateful for all that has been ac-complished to date”.

Before attending college’, says Ann ‘I wanted

to concentrate on textiles, but after only

a few days “playing” in the stained glass

department, I was hooked! Unlike painting which

deals with reflected light, stained glass uses refracted

light making it unique among the arts. It is quite

basically painting with light.’ Following this change

of focus into this new passion, Ann studied Art and

Design at Edinburgh College of Art, specialising in

stained glass. And while still at college, it wasn’t

long before she was making a living from her art,

albeit being paid in a classic student commodity as

she explains. “I got my first commission whilst still a

student at college. It was to repair a broken window

in a bar in Edinburgh. However, no money changed

hands...I was paid in beer!”

Ann’s career trajectory has been extraordinary

since, working on many different projects, from

small domestic windows to large ceiling domes in

is for churches and this varies from traditional

figurative work to very contemporary pieces

relying on colour, line, form, texture and

symbolism to tell a story. The project for the

window in Belfast Harbour Office which recently

featured in a BBCNI documentary came about

as part of a competition. “After submitting my

design proposal I was shortlisted and eventually

selected to create the window which was

unveiled in December. I worked on this with

the very talented craftsmen of CWS Design,

Lisburn with whom I have been collaborating on

the majority of my work in Ireland for over 20

years. The window traces the history of the Port

of Belfast since the Charter of 1613 when King

James I officially declared Belfast a port, right up

to the present day.”

Ann is currently working on the designs for a set

of acid etched doors for a church in California.

In addition to the window in the Belfast Harbour

Office you can also see her work in Belfast

City Hall, St Anne’s Cathedral and Fisherwick

Presbyterian Church. If you would like to see

Don’t flip your bacon too early, wait for the colour to appear on the edges first. Colour = flavour. If you’re after something a bit healthier, grilling it is a good option. Either way, cook it until it’s crispy, but not brown and burnt.

These two are your next ingredients to add, place them in the pan to absorb the wonderful flavours. The soda will soak up the delicious favours and the potato bread will brown on the outside and soften wonderfully the in the middle.

plate but also a real contrast in flavour.Tomatoes should always be a little crispy. This will be achieved if you place them alongside your breads and cook for several minutes.

The Black Pudding is an acquired taste, but the flavour and texture is so rich and interesting. White pudding is very similar to black pudding, but does not include blood. Consequently, it consists of pork meat and fat, suet, bread, and oatmeal formed into the shape of a large sausage and sliced. Pop both your black and white pudding in the pan and continue to cook everything for a couple more minutes – after 2-3 minutes, flip everything over.

After a further 2 minutes cooking, move all the ingredients into a warmed oven, on a warmed plate to keep hot while you quickly clean your pan.You want fresh oil to fry your eggs. Crack two free-range eggs into your pan, pop a lid on to cook the top, voila!

Paul McAlister Architects welcomed Members of the NIABT and the Assembly’s Environment and Enterprise, Trade and Investment Committees to its first home built on the Passivhaus principles, created for the McGlinchey family in Crawfordsburn.

PASSIVE HOUSEEnergy Efficient Living in Crawfordsburn

www.pmarchitects.com

ENERGYICON

T      he Passivhaus approach is a very new design and

building technique in NI and is the world’s leading

standard in energy efficient construction. Ministers

were given a tour of the 2,375 sq ft home, the technology

used and learned how the strict Passivhaus criteria was met.

Paul McAlister Architects, was the first Northern Ireland

architects qualified in Passivhaus design and the creation of

the Crawfordsburn property, is a culmination of intensive

research, planning and construction. In the last three months,

the McGlinchey family have only had a total energy bill of

£345. Paul McAlister says, “A ‘Passive House’ certification

means the building requires very little energy to achieve a

comfortable temperature all year round. As well as saving

money, energy efficiency results in a reduction in energy

consumption and carbon emissions. Fluctuating energy

prices both for gas and electricity means that consumers are

constantly looking for new ways to cut energy bills to save

money. Passivhaus construction whilst on the outset is slightly

more expense, the savings to be had in future years gives

outstanding payback.”

Leslie Cree MBE MLA, North Down MLA and NIABT

Board Member adds: “I am delighted that the NIABT has

had the opportunity to visit to one of Northern Ireland’s first

Passivhaus at Crawfordsburn. This is a fantastic innovative

concept and it is great to see local business benefitting

from this initiative. The Passivhaus

represents a win, win situation for

local people, many of whom are

struggling with rising energy costs. It

is also a good news story for the local

construction sector, which has been

under significant pressures over the

past few years. I am keen to find out

how the design features built into this

house improves both economic and

environmental sustainability.”

Paul concludes, “We, at Paul McAlister

Architects, actively involve ourselves

within the world of sustainable

architecture. It is apparent that the

Passivhaus approach translates into

high quality design and construction.

This is why we feel the Passivhaus

certification is so important for quality

assurance; it allows us to identify

buildings which have truly strived to

achieve the required criteria. We hope

Government will see the benefits of

Passivhaus living and put in place

measures to encourage future building

construction adapting these principles.”
