After the short meet and greet, everyone can order breakfast off the big Egg and I menu; but new members, you are our guests and your breakfasts are free. Originally, the plan was to build about three or four G63 AMG 6x6 monstrosities. That number was bumped up to a figure between 20 and 30 units per year, which isn’t bad when you consider we’re talking about a beastly behemoth of a machine that costs nearly $500,000...and there’s one roaming around the Northeast of the United States at this very moment.

We say roaming, but perhaps stalking is a better word. After all, what else do you do with such a vehicle but stalk out parts of the world that would otherwise be inac-cessible?

The Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG 6x6 very clearly boasts a half-dozen drive wheels. Those wheels are fed power by way of a twin turbocharged 5.5-liter V-8 engine, which produces 540 horsepower and 560 pound-feet of torque. That is enough go juice to push the rig from 0-60 miles per hour in just 7.8 seconds. That’s a blister-ing pace for a vehicle that weighs over 8,300 pounds.

What is it doing here? We have no idea, but we’re certainly jealous of whoever is getting the seat time in the snowy sec-tions of the country. - Jeff Glucker

Mercedes News

Winter is not officially over yet, but with the conclusion of the Winter Olympics, the running of the Daytona 500, and the start of baseball spring training soon upon us, spring is just around the corner. I hope

everyone weathered our several recent snow storms without any damage to their beloved star cars.

With spring’s anticipated arrival, our Sec-tion will be doing more driving events, but the highlight of March will be our New Member breakfast on 15 March, 9:00 a.m., at The Egg & I restaurant, 733 N. Academy Blvd. All new members from 2013 and a guest get a free breakfast, compliments of the Pikes Peak Section.

This is a great and informal venue to come and meet your fellow members and Mercedes-Benz enthusiasts. Following breakfast there will likely be an impromp-tu fun run drive, so I am looking forward to a great turnout and meeting many new members.

Speaking of great turnouts, many thanks to Judy Bennett for organizing February’s Valentine’s Day Dinner at the award-win-ning Walter’s Bistro. The evening was the highlight of the Valentine’s Day weekend for all in attendance.

Please check out the South Park Week-end in June (page 4). The original fun run has morphed into an entire weekend of Colorado history with a side of BBQ thrown in. We’ll also have a unique op-portunity to learn about the railroad his-tory of our state. Plan to join us.

As always, drive safe, and I will see you down the road.

D-I-Y Tech Session

Saturday, 19 April 20149:00 a.m.

On Saturday, 19 April, we have plans to visit the History Colorado Center in Den-ver after our breakfast at the Egg and I. The History Colorado Center is located in Denver’s Golden Triangle Museum District at 1200 Broadway. The museum is high tech and hands-on and was named the #1 Must See Museum in True West maga-zine. It states, “the museum’s interactive and informative exhibits richly illustrate Colorado’s dynamic history. Each exhibit is engaging for all ages!”

The exhibits blend technology, media environments and artifacts on two levels. As you enter you see the “Great Map of Colorado” a 40 ft x 60 ft topographical map (as seen from 400 miles in space) embedded in the terrazzo. From there the hands-on fun begins!

Admission for a group (10 minimum) is $10 for adults, $8 for those 65+. Reserva-tions have to be made in advance for our

tour so an exact number of participants is required. Details about purchasing tick-ets will be in the April newsletter. Parking is readily available in a garage located at 12th and Broadway across from the museum. For 2-3 hours it costs $4. For those of you who are hungry after your visit,we plan to head south out of Denver and have a late lunch at the Great North-ern Tavern.

Plan to join us for this event on 19 April. To make reservations, contact Mary Bixler at [email protected] or 719-597-1281, not later than 14 April.

“All you pay

Sunday, 27 April 201410:00 a.m.

Winter doldrums are soon to be behind us - hard to believe but true! Spring is coming and it’s time to start thinking about getting your beau-tiful Benz ready for those upcoming road trips.

Get busy de-winterizing your cars - take off those clunky snow tires, install a new battery, replace worn-out wind-shield wipers, adjust your coolant levels, and check your belts and hoses. These are all quick and easy projects you can do yourself at a huge savings.

All you pay for is the parts (at our 20% discount, of course) and a $10 fee to use the service bay. This is also a good time to do any deferred maintenance on all things mechanical. Mercedes-Benz of Colorado Springs will provide service

techs to help you over the rough spots. Think of the sense of pride you’ll feel when you fix your Benz yourself!

Come on down to Mercedes-Benz of Colo-rado Springs on Sunday, 27 April,

at 10:00 a.m. for our spring Do-It-Yourself Tech Session. Call Dave Williamson at 719- 575-7976 to reserve your service bay and lift.

Calling all cars! It’s time once again for the Veteran Motor Car Club of America (VMCCA) Car Show at Holy Cross Abbey

in Canon City. We are planning our annual fun run after breakfast to go and see all the classic and muscle cars. The question of the day is, do we want to show our “star” cars on the field?

If we are going to show our cars, we must pre-register so we can be parked together on the grass.

Pre-registration is $20 per car and in-

cludes admission for the driver and a pas-senger. Deadline to pre-register is 5 May 2014. If you would like to show your car, contact Judy Bennett at 719-576-9737 or [email protected], to let her know what car you’d like to show.

Those who want to spectate will meet as usual at The Egg & I Restaurant for our usual monthly breakfast and then caravan down to Canon City for the show. A scenic drive and lunch will follow the show. Hope to see you there.

VMCCA Fun Run - 17 May 2014

Come with us as we rediscover our Gold Rush past during our South Park Week-end on Saturday and Sunday, 21-22 June. Fairplay, located in South Park, contains South Park City, a remarkable restoration of early Gold Rush towns, preserving the history of our nation’s frontier while edu-cating and entertaining today’s visitors.

The museum is an accurate representation of a mining town between 1860 and 1900. Thirty-four authentic buildings filled with over 60,000 artifacts portray most of the economic and social aspects of boomtown life. The restored buildings contain period room settings and exhibits illustrating the professions, trades and industries that contributed to life in a nineteenth century Colorado mining town.

After our museum tour, we’ll move on to the annual South Park Kick-Ass BBQ Festival. This is the second day of a 2-day competition of 35 of the country’s top BBQ masters vying for $10K in prize money and bragging rights. You can sample pork BBQ

from five of the competing teams for $15 for lunch. Then it’s off to wander among the vendors and pick up some souvenirs at this unique “Highest BBQ Competition” in the world!

For those not returning home Saturday afternoon and choosing to stay the night for the next day’s events, we’ve reserved rooms for our group at two local hotels. Reservation information will appear in the April newsletter. In the evening, we will meet for cocktails and dinner dinner and a special presentation from the president of the Denver, South Park and Pacific Histori-cal Society.

Following breakfast on Sunday, we’ll drive to Como for a special tour of the stone-built railroad round house, dating from the 1870s. This structure is being restored and is not normally open for public tours. After our tour, we’ll head for Breckenridge via Boreas Pass, a well-maintained gravel road. If you don’t want to do dirt, it’s an easy drive back to Fairplay and over Hoo-sier Pass into Breckenridge for lunch.

If you choose to drive up to Fairplay on Sunday, you can meet us and join us for our Sunday adventure. Where and when to meet will be in the April newsletter. For more information, contact Stan and Mary Bixler at [email protected], 719-597-1281, or Clark Absher at [email protected], 719-749-2621. Sign up today!

Star Party - 28 June 2014The Pikes Peak Section is introducing a new event this year. It will be our first annual Star Car Star Party. You might be asking yourself, “What is a Star Party?” It’s tailgating with telescopes.

This will be an opportunity to get together with friends for an entertaining and edu-cational evening in the great outdoors. Provided we have clear skies on the night

of the event, you will see some wonderful sights....maybe the rings of Saturn or the giant red spot on the planet Jupiter along with some of the planet’s many moons. In addition to star viewing, we will be running a movie (something to do with astronomy or a good SciFi flick).

We will have up to 5 or more telescopes set up in a dark field to view the night sky objects. Just a few of the objects we will be able to see on the night of the 28th of June (weather permitting) will be located in the east and south portion of the night sky.

After the sun sets and the skies become dark, around 9:00 p.m., we’ll be ready for viewing. You will be encouraged to go from telescope to telescope, to view a different

object in each scope.

There are thousands of items in the night sky and we will try and pick out some of the most interesting. If you watch closely you may be able to see satellites transit the night sky. We will have a few comput-ers set up with sky maps so you can get an idea of what there is to see in the sky.

Because we are going to be outside in the Peyton area, I would advise you bring along some mosquito repellent, as well as a jacket since we all know how it cools off when the sun goes down. Other items to bring are camp chairs and flashlights.

There will be a nominal charge of $5 for this event to cover non-alcoholic beverag-es and snacks. You are welcome to bring more substantial fare as well as libations of all types.

We are still in the planning stages for this event, so please stay up to date by read-ing the monthly newsletter. If you have an idea or questions, contact Ken Sheehan at 719-433-9025, or via email [email protected].

New DeliveryWe welcomed our second 2014 vehicle to the Pikes Peak family on a cold snowy night on 31 January. Stan and Mary Bixler took delivery of their 2014 GLK350. Palladium silver in color with a neutral interior, it is such a beauty, and more impor-tantly, a much better size for di-minutive Mary, especially when compared to their previous ML.

We lifted our glasses and sam-pled Andrea’s meatballs while checking out the Bixler’s new ride. It has all the bells and whistles we have come to expect from a new Mercedes-Benz. Mary reports that it is

super peppy and sure-footed in the snow, and that it needed a bath before they even got it home! Welcome to the Pikes Peak family, little GLK!

Valentine’s Dinner RecapWalter’s Bistro in southwest Colorado Springs was the setting for our first Sec-tion dinner of 2014. Seventeen Pikes Peak Section members showed up for the eve-ning...and looked mighty fine, I might add.

We enjoyed cocktails and conversation with new and dear friends before sitting down to a beautifully set table in a cozy pri-vate dining room, complete with chocolate hearts for the ladies and cherry lollipops (in lieu of cigars) for the gents.

Our waiter, Michael, was efficient and professional. He quickly took orders and made suggestions and basically made the entire ordering process painless. With that, conversation resumed, lively and full of laughter, always a good sign.

When dinner arrived, it was everything we had expected. Dishes ranged from the house special of shrimp and salmon pasta with a tomato sauce, to grilled scallops, steak, and every permutation in between. Needless to say, there was a significant re-

duction in the noise level in the room while we all paid due diligence to our plates. Dessert followed for those with room, and we capped the evening with a less than melodic rendition of “Happy Birthday” to Bob Kenney, who appreciated the intent if not the execution.

Everyone there mentioned that they want to do this again and soon. So we’ve al-ready begun the search for our next fine dining location. Suggestions?

Several members have asked about get-ting personalized name tags with our Sec-tion name and the MBCA logo. I’m happy to report that after due consideration, the Pikes Peak Section Board of Directors has decided to authorize the purchase of name tags for new members, beginning on 1 Jan-uary 2014. Each new member will receive a name tag for the member(s) listed on the membership roster at no charge.

For members who joined before 2014, you can purchase a name tag from the Club Store. The name tags come in dark blue (white letters), silver or gold (black letters)with a magnetic or safety pin clasp. The name tag has two lines of text - your name and Pikes Peak Section. The cost is $10 each.

Ordering from the website is not intuitively obvious, so here’s what you do. First, you must be logged in at www.mbca.org. Place your cursor on the tab at the top called Club Store. Do not click. As you cursor

over, a drop-down box called Printed Mate-rials will appear. The name badge option is the second option on the list. Click on the name badge and then fill in the informa-tion in the box at the bottom of the page.

You can also con-tact Pam Gleeton at 800-637-2360, or [email protected], to order your name badge.

As you know, the Club Store has recently undergone some changes. There is still some inventory left from the old store. Stop by the store in person, peruse the shelves and save on shipping costs. Or you can order shirts, jackets, sweaters, hats, and blankets (all the things you’ll need for the Star Party!) via the website by clicking on the Wearables eStore under the Club Store tab. Check out the new inventory and stock up today.

‘ROUND THE BENZ

Mercedes-Benz is returning to the MPV market with a new model called the V-Class. It isn’t confirmed for the U.S. market just yet, although it is expected to arrive here eventually.

Mercedes-Benz’s R-Class may not have been a success but the German automaker is giving the luxury MPV segment another go, unveiling the all-new V-Class.

So what exactly is the V-Class? The latest Benz is a full-size MPV catering to families and shuttle bus operators looking to haul upwards of eight people in luxury and com-

fort. A rugged and more utilitarian version, which will likely be called the Vito, is also in the works and will be aimed at commercial buyers looking for something smaller than Mercedes’ existing Sprinter van.

Being a Mercedes, the V-Class boasts an extensive range of features currently not found in the MPV segment. These include a system to keep a vehicle straight in heavy crosswinds, a system to detect if the driver is nodding off, and a touchpad control surface for the infotainment system. A 360-degree camera is also available in addition to some parking aids.

At launch, the vehicle will be available with just one engine , a 2.1-liter turbodiesel, although three different outputs will be on offer: 136, 163 and 190 horsepower.

The new V-Class makes its official debut at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show in early March and will be available to order soon after for customers in Europe. Production of the V-Class range will take place at Mer-cedes’ plant in Vitoria, Spain.

Mercedes V-Class by Viknesh Vijayenthiran

2015 AMG GT by Viknesh VijayenthiranTalk of a new sports car built along the lines of the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG dates back all the way to 2011. A very early test mule based on the SLS was spotted in 2012.

Mercedes-Benz, how-ever, appar-ently devised a new sports car, which apparently shares little with the SLS.

The new car is rumored to be called the AMG GT, and will target younger buyers than those of the retro-inspired SLS. Its styling, which already appears much more modern than that of the SLS, will reflect that.

It will have traditional doors (i.e. no gull-

wing design) and its engine, an AMG-built V-8, mounted up front. It’s not clear if all-wheel drive will be offered, but given AMG’s newfound love of all-wheel-drive cars it’s entirely possible.

It will probably be significantly smaller than the SLS, meaning a lighter curb weight. A new aluminum spaceframe structure has been developed, which should help keep weight at or below 3,300 pounds. A new twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 said to be in the works is likely to be fitted, and at least two different power outputs are expected, as evidenced by the different exhaust tips on the prototypes. The most potent should offer upwards of 600 horsepower. AMG’s seven-speed SPEEDSHIFT dual-clutch ‘box, meanwhile, will handle gear changes. It will be mounted at the rear to help even out the weight distribution. Note, the 4.0-li-ter engine is expected to feature in a new C63 AMG as well.
