This is an exciting instructional initiative that Cedar Lane Elementary, along with several other schools in LCPS, are beginning as a Pilot Program. Our school was selected based on a proposal we created emphasizing student engagement, aligning project based learning with our current instructional objectives, and providing an enhanced opportunity to engage with technology and collaboration to solve relevant problems in our community. Our pilot is small, as we will have two third grade classes, two fourth grade classes, and one fifth grade class participating. Our efforts will focus on best practices and how we can in time provide this experience to all of our learners. We will be hosting Information Nights to engage, inform, and seek input from our Parent Community. LCPS has crafted a new Acceptable Use Policy which addresses the BYOT program and it can be found here: http://lcps.org/Domain/17639 Digital Citizenship is an incredibly big piece of our initiative and we are working diligently to become a certified school. To leverage technology for learning, students need to understand how to think critically, behave safely, and participate responsibly online. Clinic Reminders: Spring is coming!Parents as we are coming into Spring, that means fieldtrips will be starting in April. Please make the clinic aware of any changes, in the status of your child’s allergies, or if there are any new concerns. We want to be fully aware and prepared to make it a safe and fun day for everyone.

FYI: We do send their Epi-pen or inhaler with them on their fieldtrips. If the parent is not on the field trip, with the class, the students that have Epi-pens will be assigned with the teacher for the day. Students with Inhalers can be with their designated chaperone for the day.

Spring time brings Virginia’s high pollen counts so, for those that suffer it is always good to note:

1. Starting your allergy medication early and giving it daily.

2. The clinic does not have allergy medication stocked. It has to be provided by the parent/ guardian for their child to take in school. Most over the counter brands are given daily or every 12 hours, so it is advised to give these at home.

3. Benadryl and medicated eye drops are other medications that are not stocked, in the clinic, and have to be provided by a parent/guardian.

4. Saline eye wash is stocked, in the clinic, to administer for red irritated eyes.

5. Good hand washing and rinsing of student’s faces after playing outside is encouraged to help reduce allergy symptoms, in school and at home.

6. Pollen sticks to our clothes and hair, after we have been outside playing during the day, so bathing or showering daily, on those high pollen count days, helps to greatly reduce the allergens that are creating irritating allergy symptoms.

As always no medication can be brought to school, in the student’s back pack. A Medication Administration form has to be filled out by the parent for each medication that is kept in the clinic.

If you ever have any questions please contact the clinic at 571-252-2120 or my email address at [email protected]

Thank you, Cindy DelGross, RN BSN

Mark your calendars for the 2015 International Night to be held at Cedar Lane!

On Thursday night, April 9th, 2015, we invite all the families from Cedar Lane to join us for a great night of celebrating the diversity here at Cedar Lane. International Night will be held from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. at Cedar Lane.

The evening will have a variety of food to sample from around the globe in the cafeteria from 6 p.m. - 7 p.m. We invite all of our families to dress in clothing that represents a country you share your lineage with, a country you have visited, or one that you hope to visit! We will have a Parade of Nations to showcase countries from around the globe right here at Cedar Lane. We will also have entertainment from 7 p.m. - 8 p.m. that highlights various cultures.

Like last year, we invite you to bring a dish to share with other families that comes from another country. We had a great turn out and participation last year with sharing dishes from different cultures and hope to grow on the amazing participation this year. If you have any questions about this, please contact Colleen Mullen at [email protected]. We look forward to sharing food, culture, and fun with you on April 9th!

Chez Cedar Lane News! Thanks to everyone for getting our National Breakfast Promotion off to a Roaring Start!

National Nutrition Month 2015 Kicked off at our Cedar Lane Cafeteria (Chez Cedar Lane). We started with the most important meal of the day, Breakfast! The students have made many posters of their favorite foods for breakfast. I spoke with our nurse, Cynthia DelGross, who in turn spoke with Cindy Fields, one of the resource nurses and there are no restrictions for a student to take their breakfast back to the classroom to eat in the morning if they are running late or their bus came late. This is one meal that they need to have, she said.

We have had a great response to our promotion and we are seeing new faces at Breakfast. We have many new Breakfast items also: Cheese Omelets with Croissant, Peach Yogurt Parfait, Pepperoni Beef Stick, Scrambled Eggs on Mini Croissant, we have also added fresh fruit to the menu. Any student that comes down to try our new Breakfast will receive a Cedar Lane Coloring Book, The last several days breakfast has increased by 30 students, almost a 60% increase, go Lions!

Attention parents of 3rd, 4th and 5th graders. TALENT SHOWTThe Cedar Lane Talent Show is scheduled to take place on Friday, May 8th. We are in needof one or two parents to co-chair this event with me this year and possibly take the lead next year. This is my favorite event of the year, it is lots of fun and incredibly rewarding. Rehearsals will take place after school one or two days for three weeks in April.

No musical talent or experience necessary to chair the event, just basic organizational skills and kindness! You will receive tremendous supported from the music teacher and many other parent volunteers but it is important to have one individual willing and interested to keep this event going for the next year.

Please contact me with any questions or if you are interested in being part of this team.

Thank you,

Mary Reilly | [email protected] or cell 703-309-8249

More details for students interested in the Talent Show will be available soon.

Family Reading NightCome join the Cedar Lane PTA for “Reading Under the Stars”. Snuggle up with some great books and awesome guest readers. Family Reading Night will be Friday, March 20th from 6:30 to 8:30. There will be a book swap, raffles and prizes. Your favorite teachers and staff will be reading stories and having fun! Ashburn Library will be there with a special guest, Birdie the Owl. Start sending in book swap books to your child’s teacher March 16th. All children will get to bring home a book swap book.

HELP NEEDED FOR SPRING CARNIVAL The Spring Carnival is May 16 (9am - 11:30am). This is a new event - so this is a great opportunity for someone to get creative. We need someone to be the chair (or co-chairs) of this event. If we don’t have chairs by April 7th - we will need to remove this event from our PTA calendar this year. Thank you if you can be a hero.

Odyssey of the MindFIVE TEAMS TO PARTICIPATE AT REGIONAL TOURNAMENT

Cedar Lane Team A performed their solution to the Silent Movie problem called “The Hexagon Force.” They earned a second place finish and had great fun together.

Left to right: Sarah A., Katheryn T., Pranav B., William L., Abhinav B., Mairin M. and Ava S.

Left to Right: Eric L., Sara L., Natalie V., Sarah D., Paris A., Amanda D., and Emily M.

OM Inc. (Odyssey of the Mind Incorporated) chose to work on the Silent Movie problem. For this problem, they had to present the filming of a silent movie, in which a villain character commits three silly acts of villainy. Sometimes he gets away with it, but eventually he gets caught. Like the old black and white silent movies, our cast was not allowed to talk during their performance. They had to communicate the story to the audience through their acting and a few subtitles, which proved challenging.

Our team also made their own instruments and composed their own music to accompany the skit. Writing original music was the most difficult task, but the team really rose to the challenge. They created pop bottle guitars and palm pipes that they used to play two different segments of music that truly enhance the production. They even presented a trailer for an upcoming feature. OM Inc. had the audience laughing throughout the performance as they watched the mischievous villain lay a trap and play pranks on her victim.

I am proud of all the hard work they have put into their silent movie and amazed with what they were able to accomplish working together as a team. They represented Cedar Lane well and placed 1st in the Silent Movie problem!! Now they are advancing to the State Odyssey of the Mind Competition on April 18th. Best of luck!

Pandora’s box. Video game. Version 2.0

Pandora is a new student at the Olympus Academy. Principal Zeus trusts her and leaves his magic math book with her. Pandora is very curious. She just wants to peek in. As soon as she opens the book three evils escape from the book. Pandora can release Hope only by defeating Greed, Jealousy and Anger and putting them back in the book. After going through a lot of trouble Pandora does it and Hope is released into the world.

Pandora is tired. On the way home she accidentally drops the book that opens and the evils escape ... to be continued.

Pandora’s Box Team B includes Natalie L., Lisa D., Victoria D., Jenny W., Annabelle X., Harry C. and Ishana R.

Odyssey of the MindFIVE TEAMS TO PARTICIPATE AT REGIONAL TOURNAMENT

Our Primary Team, the Young Alberts, tackled Wacky Weather Warning. When our friends Kylie, Jack the Robot and Jacob the Talking Dog want to go to a festival where do they turn to check the weather? Why to the weather team of Jake and Jet and the Mapster Rapster. X-ray vision sun would be great but Rainbow Rain is what they get. These little guys blew us away. They handled themselves like seasoned Omers and demonstrated what the spirit of Odyssey of the Mind is all about. Fantastic job Millie, KaeLeigh, Alex, Jeremiah, Colin, and Liam.

Team Hope took on the challenge of Pandora’s Box. On the big stage we saw Kyre’s epic journey to get his wings. He mended the relationship betweern a mummy and a vampire, battled an evil snowman, befriended a unicorn, and defeated the crafty leprechaun. Kyre ultimately earned his wings and released HOPE into the world. These Cedar Lane Lions gave our community hope and pride! Way to go Colin, Jack, Parker, Isaiah, Hamza, Omar, and Sam!

The Odyssey coaches, participants and

famlies would like to give a special thanks to our volunteers and judges! Without you

we couldn’t have even competed!

The Forever Greens held another enlightening Waste Weigh In Event on Monday, February 23rd during lunch. We thank our volunteers – both parent and scholar - for your time and assistance. During the course of our lunch, we collected 184 pounds of food and 14 bags. The breakdown is as follows:

Recycling - 10 pounds / 3 bags

Food Waste - 99 pounds / 3 bags

True Trash - 45 pounds / 8 bags

A new category we measured came from the Food Recovery Program. We recovered 15 pounds of perishables (dairy products), 12 pounds of fruit (mostly whole apples) and 3 pounds of snacks and juice boxes coming to 30 pounds total. Combine the recycling and recovered food and we diverted 40 pounds of trash from the Loudoun County Landfill. A good start, but we think we can do better at our next Waste Weigh In event when we will collect liquids separately from food waste. Stay tuned for more details and date.

Mark your calendars for Saturday, April 25th when we hold our Spring Clean Up event. Hopefully the snow will have melted by then and we can prepare our garden beds for the coming season. If all goes to plan, we will also be planting trees and shrubs to diversify our habitat offering for the critters that like to call Cedar Lane’s school grounds home.

Please contact Ellen McDougall at [email protected] should you have any questions about the Forever Greens program or are interested in volunteering to help.
