Our 21st Blackbird Reunion,

June 11-14, at the Nugget Hotel in

Reno, is rapidly approaching. Our

Reunion in 2013 saw over 300

The Kelly Johnson Trophy is a lifetime achievement award presented to an individual who has significantly con-tributed to the Blackbird programs. This person has far exceeded what was required in the performance of

duties to perpetuate, foster, and improve the Blackbird programs over many years. Tony Bevacqua, the 2013 recipient of this award, is no stranger to the marvelous airplanes that Kelly Johnson

built. In 1957 he was the youngest Air Force pilot to ever check out in the U-2, training at legendary Groom Lake,

later known as Area 51. Tony was an operational pilot in both the U-2 and SR-71 for 16 years flying over 2,700

hours in these demanding and unforgiving airplanes.

Retiring in 1973, he became a major spokesman for Yuba/Sutter Counties and Beale. A frequent speaker, fund

raiser and social organizer he offered continued support for the dynamic relationships between the local civilian

and military organizations. He remains politically involved—fighting for the future of Beale to remain active. He

served on the BMLC for over 30 years and Chaired it for 18. He was a member of several local committees traveling

to D.C. to gain Congressional support for Beale’s mission and its personnel. These efforts helped insure the sur-

vival of the U-2 program, and brought new missions, aircraft and military personnel to expand the role of Beale. His

personal leadership and continued involvement help maintain the superb relationships between the Yuba/Sutter

area and the military mission at Beale.

He was driven by his military experiences in the U-2 and SR-71 programs, and the impact those programs had on

his life. He spent these last 40 years working continuously to support the mission of high altitude reconnaissance,

the survival of Beale as the anchor of such a mission and publicizing the legends of Kelly Johnson's favorite air-

planes, the U-2 and SR-71. These lifetime accomplishments are literally second-to-none.

Christina Olds, a military “brat” who bounced around the

world with her Fighter Pilot/Ace father Robin Olds and Holly-

wood actress mother Ella Raines, was raised mostly in

Washington D.C., England and Colorado, graduating from

Vassar College and spending 25 years in Marin County. Be-

tween 1979 and 2001, Christina held a variety of project man-

agement positions in international corporations based in down-

town San Francisco. In 2003 Christina moved to Colorado to be

near her father, who had retired from the Air Force as a

Brigadier General in 1973. In Colorado she worked as a project

designer for Vail Resorts Development. While caring for her

father during his final years, Christina promised to complete his

unfinished memoirs from his gathered notes. Robin Olds passed

away in 2007. FIGHTER PILOT; THE MEMOIRS OF

LEGENDARY ACE ROBIN OLDS was published in 2010.

In 2011 Christina moved from Colorado back to the Bay Area

and currently lives in Healdsburg, CA. She is the Director of

Museum Operations, Pacific Coast Air Museum at the

Charles M. Schulz-Sonoma County Airport in Santa Rosa.

22 Dec 1964 — Dec 2014 Test Pilot Bob Gilliland

Extensive Planning and ground systems checks led up to the first test flight of any SR-71 aircraft, A/C

950., on 22 December 1964. Bob Gilliland took off from Palmdale, CA with three F-104s flying chase to

verify flight parameters and to film the event. Chase pilots included Jim Eastham, Fox Stephens, & Walt

Daniel. Takeoff was smooth with a climb to 20,000 ft and .9 Mach. Flight handling was tested with SAS

checked on and off. Climb and acceleration to 30,000ft at 1.2 Mach to check aircraft pressurization sys-

tems. Here a canopy unsafe light came on, but Bob could confirm that the canopy hooks were locked;

therefore the test could proceed to 50,000 ft and mach 1.5. Successful completion of all these tests

marked the first test aircraft ever taken supersonic on its first flight and a tremendous credit to Kelly John-

son’s team and the expertise of the test pilot Bob Gilliland. Contributed by Buz Carpenter

50 Anniversary of First SR-71 Flight

At the 50th anniversary of the first SR-71 flight, it is time to consider supporting your local museum with

your knowledge and experiences. Joe Kinego, Phil Soucy, Chuck Wilson & Buz Carpenter serve as do-

cents at the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum – Steven Udvar Hazy Center (the layout design and man-

agement of the opening under the watchful eye of Tom Alison). Hopefully Curt Osterheld and Ash Laffer-

ty will be in our next docent class. As memories fade and increasingly more people are becoming fasci-

nated about the success story we know as the Blackbirds, an opportunity arises to share first-hand our

wonderful experiences while meeting some remarkable, enthusiastic aviation fans. Your role with the SR-

71, U-2 or KC-135 does not matter; the important thing is sharing your experiences. Our incredible air-

craft & unparalleled mission success continues to capture people’s imagination – young & old alike. As

docents we can help keep our history true, and motivate our museum visitors to pursue careers which

may provide some future generation their own Blackbird type success story. Meeting and interfacing with

museum guests is a most rewarding experience. Docents come from all backgrounds and all of our con-

tributions are important. To be a docent you may initially want to volunteer at local museum symposia.

Contact your local museum to understand its docent requirements and training (You will almost certainly

become an expert in FAR more than your familiar aircraft or job). Working as a docent is not a job—it is

an unselfish way some have chosen to give back to our marvelous aviation heritage. We hope to see

many more of you volunteering to help our Aviation museums around our country! Buz Carpenter

The first ever HABU – ASTRONAUT gathering took place at the Kansas Cosmosphere Space Center in August to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first SR-71 flight and the 45th anniversary of Apollo’s 10,11&12 missions. Located in Hutchinson, KS, this Friday thru Sunday event included six SR panels, two

Shuttle Astronaut panels, a Red Carpet introduction, Special Dinners, an Auction, and Apollo Reflections. Blended in with this was an SR historical filming for the Smithsonian by a British film production and an overnight Scout Aviation badge event with over 100 scouts coming from 3 different states; plus a Women in

Aeronautical Engineering forum that featured Cady Coleman and our own Denise Garcia. Attending Apollo astronauts included Jim Lovell, Fred Haise, & Charlie Duke. Shuttle Astronauts were Joe Engle, Steve Hawley, Catherine Coleman, Mike Mullane, Jerry Ross, & Charles Walker. Habus present were

Pat Halloran, Rich Graham, Don Walbrecht, John Murphy, Lee Shelton, Jim Shelton, G.T. Morgan, Gil Bertelson, Frank Stampf, Buz Carpenter, Joe Kinego, Jerry Glasser, John Manzi, Al Payne, Dave Burns, Mike Hull, Denise Garcia, Lew Sulzle, & Ron Thompson. A great time was had by all with many incredible stories

shared about our common space suit environments and our pursuits of mission excellence. One fact from Apollo 13, was when the disaster took place they found the duct tape in the capsule. It was not a planned item but from that time on, all space capsules have included duct tape. Buz Carpenter

Before he passed away in November 2010, Leland Haynes asked David Allison if he would take over the maintenance of

his web site. He provided him necessary passwords (he thought) and instructions to log on and make updates.

He failed to tell David how he updated the guestbook/Alma Mater page and as David had never signed the guestbook he

didn't realize it wasn't an automatic process. In order to cut out spam, and general inappropriateness, Leland was manually

copying postings from the guestbook and pasting them into the current Alma Mater page. He manually highlighted names

in red to make it easier for people to spot them, in case someone was reaching out to someone from their past.

At the 2013 Reunion, Menko Christoph advised that he did not have the password to Leland's guestbook, so a new

guestbook was initiated and followed Leland's rules to the letter. Myriad messages started coming in but David pondered

the significant loss of those firsthand recollections of the blackbird program, especially the early years.

David contacted Leland's widow, Diane, and asked for help to reset the email password. Once there was access to

Leland’s email account, it was possible to start the process of resetting the guestbook password......and there they were,

over 120 messages that had been piling up. It took about a week to copy and format them all into the online guestbook, but

when it was over, the Alma Mater page was up to date and the history gap had been filled.

For anyone who posted messages during those 2 years, we can happily say you have not been overlooked, and are now

part of blackbird history. Thanks to David Allison for chronology and great work

Leland Haynes’ Alma Mater Web Site

Would you find it surprising that almost every single Q-model is still flying! Even 59-1474, the one that collided with

SR-71 #970 during refueling, is still operational. The exceptions are 58-0039 — lost in a crash in Spain in 1971 and

60-0338 — lost in a ground fire at Plattsburgh AFB in 1980.

One reason they're still flying is because they refueled the SR-71. The original engines on the KC-135A were wanting for

power. At the end of the refueling track the “Q” was going nearly as fast as it could while the SR-71 was nearing a stall!

Some of the Q fleet got new CFM-56 engines—more thrust and improved fuel economy, allowing both aircraft to fly faster

during refueling. The retrofitted KC-135Q models were redesignated KC-135T. With all SR’s being retired, the KC-

135T's have been redesignated as KC-135R. So far not a single KC-135R has been retired.
