And the Spark Plug recipients are…

The Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce along with the Keweenaw Economic Development Alliance, MTEC SmartZone and Keweenaw Young Professionals, are proud to put the third Annual Spark Plug Dinner in the books!

Our community is fortunate to have so many positive and inspirational business and individual successes. This is an opportunity to show support of a deserving business or individual for the prior year.

All community members had the opportunity to nominate a member of the business community as well as individuals for six Spark Plug Awards. This year there were over 50 nominations and that was a great problem to have for our selection committee.

2 Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce Newsletter

I want to thank everyone for the strong support of the Chamber! We have been actively engaging the

Chamber membership, to build a strong foundation of committee volunteers, many community business

leaders have stepped forward and are showing their creativity by thinking outside the box. It’s a new day,

let’s encourage everyone to become actively involved, be inspired, and do great work on behalf of the

Chamber of Commerce for all its members and the community.

Maybe, because we are so busy, doing so much for all businesses, we haven’t been the best at

communicating what it is we’ve been up to…so, each month we hope to share all those important items to

all of our busy, business members. We act on your behalf, we are your voice for the business community in

this busy world, we are your clearinghouse of business information, community information, a collaborative

partner with other organizations and community partners on a variety of initiatives. We attend many local

organizational and governmental meetings, we speak on the business communities behalf when needed

and so much more…

Since the end of July 2014 the Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce has been involved with Connect Michigan

and WUPPDR to address the Broadband issue in the area. We have completed the “Broadband Survey” of

our members and submitted the information to WUPPDR. We have completed some of the asset mapping

of our members. We want to make sure, we have free WIFI hotspots identified at all businesses and within

the community, reach out to us if you are one. The Chamber is actively working with our collaborative

partners in addressing Broadband issues (cellphone and internet service), we know service areas need to

improve in the Upper Peninsula, it affects businesses, the community, visitors and those looking to locate to

our area. We along with the Marquette Chamber, had been actively voicing to the Michigan Chamber of

Commerce the need to move forward, House Bill 4237 to allow for collocation on the Michigan public safety

communications system. Act No. 564 was successfully approved by the Governor on January 10, 2015.

Hopefully, high service needs areas will see providers, applying for collocation and utilizing the ability to

provide service in areas of need. We will continue to collaborate on this important issue for our area and

the Upper Peninsula.

The Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce proposed a Western U.P. Regional Chamber Alliance at the October,

Regional Prosperity Initiative (RPI) meeting. During that time, the Chamber has been meeting with other

Chambers in the Western U.P. and utilizing Thirsty Thursdays to get together and collaborate. We will

continue to meet every other month in different locations. The Chambers hope to bring more opportunities

for all of our members. By providing opportunities to collaborate, we will all benefit.

Occasionally, you hear from mostly those that are not Chamber of Commerce members or actively involved

Chamber members, comments like “what does the Chamber do for me?” or, “the Chamber doesn’t do

anything for me…” This is a membership organization – members do things for other members, everyone

needs to be engaged and participating. The Chamber Board of Directors are volunteer members, who have

stepped forward to make a difference in your organization. The Chamber Board of Directors is actively

working on priorities in a Strategic Plan, including; identifying and organizing additional committees. It will

expand the opportunities for member involvement, for the benefit of all members. It’s an exciting time at

the Chamber…we hope you share your expertise with everyone!

Safe & Reliable Electricity

Customer Service

Proud Community Supporter

Our roots run deep in the Keweenaw, going back to 1884, just five

years after Edison’s incandescent bulb put electricity at the fingertips

of people. That year, Peninsula Electric Light and Power Company

was organized in the Keweenaw Peninsula. Because Peninsula

Electric Light and Power was our original predecessor, you might say

UPPCO grew up with the electric utility industry. From the Edison

bulb to high-tech electronics, our company has been providing energy

to the area and U.P. for more than 100 years.

We do not have an exact schedule of closures at this time, but we will release it as soon as it is available.

The Michigan Department of Transportation has sent the Chamber a PDF document to provide some initial information about the upcoming Portage Lake Lift Bridge rehabilitation project. If you would like the document emailed or mailed to you please contact the Chamber. Phone 482.5240 or email: [email protected].

The major closures are:• In January 2015 there will be eight (8) 2-hour closures 2 am – 4 am• March 21st, 2015 a 11.5 hour closure from 8 pm with an alternate date of March 28th in case of weather

Houghton County Poised to Save Energy, Money . . .

and Win $5 MillionFree/Low-Cost Programs Help Businesses Cut Energy Costs

Every month when they open their utility bills, businesses and residents throughout Houghton County get a

rude reminder of the region’s high energy costs. Now a group of volunteers has banded together to lower

those bills--and maybe win the county a multi-million-dollar prize.

Houghton County is one of 50 semifinalists for the Georgetown University Energy Prize, which challenges

communities across the US to reduce energy consumption. The winner receives $5 million to pursue energy-

saving initiatives.

The Houghton Energy Efficiency Team, or HEET, is working with utilities and other groups to boost ongoing

energy conservation efforts. Here are several free and low-cost resources to help area businesses cut their

energy bills.

Michigan Retired Engineer Technical Assistance Program

MI-RETAP’s teams of retired engineers conduct free, confidential energy- and waste-reduction assessments.

Over 1,300 businesses (including manufacturers) have used this service, with cost savings averaging more

than $45,000. See www.michigan.gov/retap or contact David Herb at 517-284-6863.

Michigan Saves!

This a nonprofit offers financing up to $250,000 for a variety of energy upgrades, including lighting, HVAC,

food service equipment and more. The financing is structured so the energy savings are equal to or greater

than the business' payments. See http://michigansaves.org/business or contact Todd O’Grady at 248-701-

3058.

Efficiency United for UPPCO and SEMCO customers

Efficiency United’s Commercial and Industrial Program includes the following:

● The Prescriptive program provides incentives for replacing old systems with high-efficiency lighting, HVAC and agricultural equipment.

● The Custom Program provides rebates for the installation of innovative and unique energy efficient equipment.

● The Continuous Improvement Programs gives customers up to $5,000 in cash incentives to become more energy efficient.

industrial-programs/ or call Dave Camps, Blue Terra Energy, at 906-231-3995
