Thanks to all that were in attendance at the detachment monthly meeting in February. Please read JVC/Adjutant Terry Crum’s minutes for a snapshot of all that was discussed at the February meeting. We are well under way making preparations for the Marine Corps League 2016 Department of Colorado Convention. Our detachment will be hosting the event, 5-8 May, at the Colorado Springs Embassy Suites, located at 7290 Commerce Center Drive. At our February meeting, sign-up sheets were circulated seeking our member’s involvement in a number of capacities and I want to take an opportunity to thank those of you that signed up to help. We are counting on as many as possible to attend the convention to have a strong showing and hopefully bring home another ribbon to hang on our detachment colors. There is still plenty to be done and one way that everyone can help is to reach out to the businesses that you frequent and invite them to place an ad in our convention book. This book will be handed out to all registered attendees and would be a great, inexpensive way for them to reach possible customers from all over the state. Some other areas that you can pitch in with would include, holding a seat on the convention planning committee, being a detachment delegate/alternate at the business sessions, manning the registration table or ship’s store (cash sales), or coming out to attend the banquet. Information sheets regarding placing an ad in the convention book and registration forms for the scholarship luncheon and grand banquet are located on our detachment’s webpage. If you have any questions, please contact me and we can discuss your potential role in making this one of the best conventions yet. Please remember to talk to Paymaster Denise Wickersheim regarding your membership dues if you are not a life member. We will again be sending out a very friendly reminder to all those whose dues have lapsed or are in danger of doing so in the next ninety days. Also, we can now accept credit/debit card payments for dues, cash sales, and donations to the Marines Helping Marines Fund, Scholarship Fund and Marine Corps Ball Fund (to include purchasing tickets). These purchases are not available online or over the phone, only in person at a meeting, or cash sales event. Do not forget to look for details on the upcoming St. Patrick’s Day Parade in the Senior Vice’s article. Semper Fi! Russ Curt Charboneau is back with us! Senior Vice Commandant Paul Hinojosa [email protected] 719-573-2185 March 12 is around the corner; I’m excited because it’s my first event of the year as Sr. Vice Commandant. We have confirmation that Hank and Joe will be there with their trucks. The Young Marines from Pikes Peak and Colorado Springs will be honoring us with their presence and leading us as we go thru the parade. We also have a motorcycle brigade forming up at the parade. If you haven’t sent me notice that you would like to ride in the parade, it’s not too late! Ride On! I am still looking at gathering us up for breakfast the day of the parade; we will be meeting at Western Omelet, located at 16 S. Walnut Street. I will have the specifics on time and place once I get the final details on parade specifics. Judge Advocate Gary George [email protected] 719-597-3054 NSTR.

Judge Advocate at recent Department Meeting. Like a boss!

Chaplain’s Corner Pat Carty [email protected] 719-337-7179 Greetings Marines, FMF Corpsmen, Associates and, Friends. The Bereavement Team

attended two Marine funerals in February for: Thomas A. Burns and, Charles Lee Turnipseed. Thank you to all who attended these services. Thanks especially to Melvin Postlewait for filling in while I was at the Department Staff meeting in Denver Saturday 28 February. Sadly, Bob and Helen Hill lost their Great Granddaughter Cheyenne Payne, in February. Cheyenne went home from school with the flu and it turned into pneumonia. She also suffered from asthma, and just could not overcome the complications. God Bless her. Iris Rudesill is undergoing treatment for severe heart and, esophageal problems. Her doctors are monitoring the situation closely and doing all they can at this time. Iris welcomes phone calls (719-685-5014) but, please check with her first if you want to visit. It was great to see all the members at the February meeting, who are undergoing and, recovering from illnesses and surgeries. I was sorry to see that Jim Maurer was not able to attend the meeting. Jim, as you may know, has some serious health issues that he is dealing with. Please keep them all in your thoughts and prayers. Consider joining our Bereavement Team. It is sincerely appreciated by the families and friends of our departed Marines, when we attend their services. You can contact me, anytime, if you know of any members, member’s families, Marines, or FMF Corpsmen residing in our community that are sick or in distress at (719) 337-7179. I appreciate your help.

“We are often exposed to, or pushed into, a situation that will force our redirection. Of course, our redirection is not really forced; rather, as we are compelled to approach the fork in our road, we make a choice to turn left or turn right. Every choice leads us forward, and there is no going backward, no “redo.” Every choice we make today affects the choices that we face tomorrow. Planet earth and the humans living on it are truly interconnected, and there is no action without some sort of reaction.” - Mary C. Neal, M.D. from her book To Heaven and Back Semper Fi, Pat Carty

Pups in attendance. I want to welcome Charles “Osa” Tuck as the newest Pup to join our sad bunch of misfit mongrels. I also want to welcome back Pup, August “Toby” Bolender - he was working/living out of state when our Pound was chartered back on 19 September 2015. With the addition of Osa & Toby, our Pounds strength has grown to 20. On 27 February many of our Pound members journeyed to Denver to attend a Department Staff meeting and a Pack Growl. I want to thank the following assorted mixed breeds for taking the time to attend this Growl: Pups Russ Miller, Paul Hinojosa, Terry Crum, Pat Carty, Gary George, Osa Tuck and little ole PDD me. The next growl will be held on Friday May 6th

, in conjunction with the Department of Colorado Growl, which is being held here in Colorado Springs from May 5th thru May 8th 2016 at the Embassy Suite’s Hotel. This is a good time to meet/growl, sniff and bite fellow mutts from around the state (put your dentures in before you attempt this). More information on what the Department Growl is all about and how we can support it to follow…Till then…keep your paws on the ground…sniff the Rocky Mountain air…laugh… have fun snarling, growling and chasing future MODD wannabees…and…help all those mutts out there less fortunate than your measly flea infested selves… Semper Fi & WOOF! Osa Tuck welcomes Toby Bolender back. This Month in History - Selected March Dates of Marine Corps Historical Significance 2 March 1867: Jacob Zeilin, Colonel Commandant of the Marine Corps from 30 June 1864, was this date promoted to the rank of Brigadier General Commandant, the first time Congress authorized this rank for the Marine Corps. The statute, however, was repealed in June 1874 so that the rank of Commandant would again revert to colonel upon Zeilin's retirement. 8 March 1965: The 9th Marine Expeditionary Brigade landed at DaNang, Republic of Vietnam as the first U.S. ground combat troops to be committed to that conflict. The 3,500 men arrived both across the beach with Battalion Landing Team 3/9, and at DaNang

Airfield with Battalion Landing Team 1/3. 11 March 1778: Marines participated the action when the Continental Navy frigate Boston, enroute to France, sighted, engaged, and captured the British merchant ship Martha. As the drum of the Boston beat to arms, John Adams seized a musket and joined the Marines on deck until the frigate's captain, Samuel Tucker, sent him below for safety. 13 March 1943: The first group of 71 Women Marine officer candidates arrived at the U.S. Midshipmen School (Women's Reserve) at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts. 17 March 1967: The first woman Marine to report to Vietnam for duty, Master Sergeant Barbara J. Dulinsky, began her 18-hour flight to Bien Hoa, 30 miles north of Saigon. MSgt Dulinsky and the other officer and enlisted Women Marines that followed were assigned to the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam (MACV) based in Saigon. Most worked with the Marine Corps Personnel Section providing administrative support to Marines assigned as far north as the DMZ, but two Lieutenant Colonels, Ruth Reinholz and Ruth O'Holleran, served as historians with the Military History Branch, Secretary Joint Staff, MACV. 25 March 1945: After 35 days of bitter fighting, the amphibious assault on the rocky fortress of Iwo Jima finally appeared over. On the night of 25 March, however, a 300-man Japanese force launched a vicious final counterattack in the vicinity of Airfield Number 2. Army pilots, Seabees and Marines of the 5th Pioneer Battalion and 28th Marines fought the fanatical Japanese force till morning but suffered heavy casualties - more than l00 killed and another 200 American wounded. Nearly all of the Japanese force was killed in the battle. 27 March 1953: The 5th Marines, supported by the 2d Battalion, 7th Marines, in the first full day of fighting after the Chinese assault the previous evening of Outpost Vegas on Korea's western front, counterattacked to regain enemy-held positions. Companies E and F of 2/7, down to only three platoons between them, managed to regain partial control of Outpost Vegas that day. 31 March 1801: On this date, Lt Col Commandant William W. Burrows rode with President Thomas Jefferson to look for "a proper place to fix the Marine Barracks on." President Jefferson was a personal friend of the Commandant, and deeply interested in the welfare of the Corps and accompanied Burrows on horseback on the morning of 31 March. They chose a square in Southeast Washington, at 8th and I streets, because it lay near the Navy Yard and was within easy marching distance of the Capitol.
