March 2016 President's Report News Find Your TRU Our new brand was revealed to a group of approximately 500 students, faculty, staff and community members on Feb. 25. The event showcased a brand strategy, launch campaign, comprehensive visual identity and tagline, and introduced the students featured in the campaign. The celebration included free coffee, hot chocolate, cookies and swag: Find Your TRU travel mugs. Canada Research Chair Awarded in Tourism Dr. Courtney Mason has been appointed as Tier II Canada Research Chair in Rural Livelihoods and Sustainable Communities in the Faculty of Adventure, Culinary Arts and Tourism. Millwright Foundation Approved A new Industrial Mechanic (Millwright) Foundation Certificate has been approved for the School of Trades and Technology thanks to funding from School District 73 and the BC Industry Training Authority (ITA) and is currently running its second intake of the program at the NorKam Trades Centre. 2016 Distinguished Alumni Announced Three alumni and a local transportation company will receive TRU Distinguished Alumni Awards on Apr. 7: Dean Nelson (’92), Resort Hotel Management Diploma, Human Rights Leadership Award; Linda Jules (’07), Bachelor of Fine Arts, Arts & Culture Award; Gurbir Sandhu (’02), Bachelor of Social Work, Grace Chronister Award; and Arrow Transportation Systems Inc., Milestone Achievement Award. Horticulture Offered in Williams Lake In response to regional demand, a new Horticulture Technician Foundation program will be offered for the first time this spring at the Williams Lake campus, with $107,920 in one-time funding from the province. Campus Plan Town Hall At a town hall on Mar. 9, the TRU community was invited to learn about recent progress on the implementation of the 2013 Campus Plan and next steps for the TRU Community Trust (TRUCT) to move forward on the university village development. Students Network at Job Fair More than 1,800 students attended Job Fair on Mar. 3, meeting 155 representatives from 57 employers in IT, tourism, health care, financial services, trades, and more. TRU staff showcasing their Find Your TRU mugs. Hundreds of mugs were given away at the Feb. 25 brand launch. Courtney Mason is TRU’s new Canada Research Chair in Rural Livelihoods and Sustainable Communities. Dean Nelson (’92) will be recognized as a TRU Distinguished Alumni at the annual awards ceremony on Apr. 7.

ExtendedSweaterDaysBundledUpSavingsToincreasetheimpactofNationalSweaterDayoncampus,theheatwasturneddownforthreedaysFeb.2to4,witharesultingsavingsof14%.Ifloweredforayear,thatwouldtranslateto$70,000inenergysavings.DrinkwithClassAninvestmentfromtheprovincialgovernmentwillassistintransformingthecultureofdrinkingoncampusthroughtheDrinkwithClasscampaign,partoftheChangingtheCultureofSubstanceUseproject.AboriginalAwarenessWeekThisyear’sAboriginalAwarenessWeekfromFeb.28toMar.4featuredanElders’LuncheonandatalkonReconciliationinAction,aswellasdance,film,a9-hourlahaltournament,andcraftslikeInuitharpoon-making.FirstPlaceforCheerTeamTheWolfPackCheerTeamtookhomefirstplaceattheMardiPartiChampionshipsinRichmondonFeb.27.TRU’s20-memberteamcompetedagainstfiveotheruniversityteamsintheCollegiateLevel4Division.LawStudentsShadowJudgesFifteenTRULawstudentsgainedvaluableinsightintothejudicialprocessFeb.15to19,inauniqueprograminwhichtheywereabletoshadowajudgeforaday.CulinaryStudentsAttendCanadianChampionshipsFiveCulinaryArtsstudentswereinvitedtoplaysupportingroleswithteamscompetingintheCanadianCulinaryChampionshipsFeb.4to6inKelowna.

TRU’sextendedSweaterDaysFeb.2to4featuredaHockeySweatercontest—showniscontestwinner,studentLaneHaller.

WolfPackSweepsPresident’sCupForthesecondstraightyear,theWolfPackbeattheHeattotakehomeboththemen’sandwomen’sPresident’sCup—afriendlyannualrivalrybetweenTRUandUBC-OinallCanadaWestsports.WorldKidneyDayNursingstudentsorganizedthethirdannualhealthfaironMar.10,helpingtospreadawarenessabouttheimportantroleourkidneysplayinouroverallhealth.LunchwiththePresidentALunchwiththePresidentforstudentswasheldonFeb.24.FacultyandstaffhadlunchwiththepresidentonMar.7.

Achievements

PaulAntonelli,MasterofSciencestudent,sharedfirstprizeinthepostercategoryatthe37thannualPacificEcologyandEvolutionConferenceinBamfieldFeb.26to28,for“FacilitatingMineRestorationwithOrganicAmendmentsandNursePlants”.JimHu,ESL,wasselectedtoadjudicateapplicationsforInternationalTravelGrantawardsforTESOLInternationalinDecember2015.MuhammadMohiuddin,InternationalBusiness,wasnominatedasanexternalevaluator/revieweroftheresearchgrantoftheOntarioMinistryofAgriculture,FoodandRuralAffairs(OMAFRA)andUniversityofGuelphresearchprogram.DianaSkoglund,MarketingandCommunications,hasbeenappointedforathree-yeartermtotheboardofdirectorsoftheCollegeofOpticiansofBritishColumbia,whichensuresthepublic’svisionneedsaremetsafelyandeffectivelybyBClicensedopticians.

PeterSoberlak,Education,hasbeenhonouredwithaWesternHockeyLeagueAlumniAchievementAward.HespentfourseasonswiththeWHL(1985-89),playingwiththeBlazersandtheSwiftCurrentBroncos,wherehewonthe1989MemorialCup.HealsoservesastheKamloopsBlazers’mentalperformancecoach.
