COMMUNITY SHED OPENING We are really excited to be finally launching our new Community Shed, on Thursday 24 th March at 10am. A small team of volunteers have been working extremely hard to get this project completed and ready to start workshops early this year. We have been astounded at the range of skills that this team has to be able to extend the shed, install internal walls and windows, line and insulate the internal walls and ceiling, metal work, paving and painting both the inside and outside of the building. The results are fantastic and we look forward to enjoying this space and inviting community members to make use of it. Thanks to Bob, Ian, Murray, Lou, Grant, Leo, Daniel, Jamie, Neil, Terry, Peter, Steve and Heather for all their hard work. The Shed has been made possible through funding by Community Benefit SA grant, Stirling Community Shop and The Book Shed. FAREWELL TYRONE

It is with sadness that I inform you that Tyrone Prins, our Client Services Manager will be leaving us at the end of April. Tyrone has been with The Hut since June 2013, and has kept us entertained with his unique sense of humour, motivational pictures and a dedication to increasing our clients’ financial literacy. Tyrone will be missed but we thank him for the contribution he has made to The Hut and the wider community and wish him every success in his move to Sydney. Deb

A MESSAGE FROM THE

EXECUTIVE OFFICER

I cannot believe I have been in this role for six months now, time certainly does fly! Perhaps it’s a sign of getting older, although I’d like to think this isn’t the case!

I continue to be impressed with the team that is ‘The Hut’. In the past few months we have finished the Community Shed

which is to be launched on the 24th March by Mayor Bill Spragg,

expanded our community programs to include mosaics, water colours, clay animation workshops, increased our Adult Education courses to include a ‘putting your best self forward’, in the process of planning a quiz night and of course we have ‘launched’ our new website. If you haven’t as yet been online to have a look, “do yourself a favour” as a wise man once said and go to www.thehut.org.au.

We also welcomed two new employees to The Hut team.

Victoria Morton will be working alongside Vicki in Hills Volunteering as a result of a successful Community Benefit SA grant. Victoria who has a strong history working with community on health related projects will be starting on 21

st March, working

three days a week as a Hills Volunteering Project Officer.

Sally Hayes will be taking over from Brianna Hammond as our Fun and Fitness Instructor. Sally’s energy and passion for keeping fit and healthy will make her an asset to this program held on Tuesdays at 9.00am at the Bridgewater Hall.

I know you will all make them both feel very welcome when you meet them.

You will have received by now an invitation to attend our Easter Breakfast on the platform and the Official Launch of The Hut Community Shed. It will be great to see many of you at these two events. I cannot thank Bob, Ian and their team enough as the work and hours they have put into making this shed a reality is truly extraordinary and an inspiration to us all.

Once again, thank you all for your efforts and time in making The Hut Community Centre a centre of excellence. Please feel free to pop into my office and have a chat about any ideas you may have. We may not be able to act on them immediately but once an idea is spoken it is rarely forgotten!

Warm regards

Deb

NILS PART 2

How the No Interest Loan Scheme (NILS) helps everyone

The NILS loans that The Hut makes available to people who are

traditionally on low income helps not just the person receiving the

loan, but has a broader reach.

The money for a loan is generally used to purchase an item that

might be essential to the person to help them maintain or improve

their standard of living. For example if someone’s fridge breaks down

and they don’t have enough money saved up to pay cash for a new

one, NILS is there. Or if a computer is required to help with studies so

that they can in the long run get new or better employment.

Sounds easy enough, but how does this help? Like this:

1. It eases the financial stress on the person needing the loan as

the NILS loan carries no interest or admin fees at all.

Only the principle amount is paid back. E.g. A new fridge

cost $840.00 the person gets $832.00 and pays $32.00 per

fortnight. We work with the applicant to ensure that they have

the capacity to repay the loan. That means we help outline a

budget that ensures the client can afford the loan.

2. The person does not need to go to a payday lender where he

or she can end up paying as much as 40% extra for the fridge

by the time the lease ends. In fact in some cases the client

does not even own the fridge and has to still find an extra

payment to settle the lease in order to take ownership.

3. A NILS loan helps people stay out of the clutches of these

payday lenders. It has been proven over and over again that

once someone uses them as a source of funds they hardly

ever get out of debt.

4. NILS helps people with their daily budgeting and helps them

take charge of their money so that they can remain

independent of the payday lender trap.

‘No Interest Loans’ contact the NILS team

Hills Connected Communities (HCC) is now operating in the Adelaide Hills and aims to support families with children, vulnerable people, isolated individuals and youth, by the provision of programs/activities to meet current gaps in services.

The program will use a strength based, community development approach to improve resilience of the community and to ensure increased community participation and engagement across the Adelaide Hills (Adelaide Hills Council and Mount Barker Council regions).

HCC is a Department of Communities and Social Inclusion (DCSI) funded initiative coordinated by a consortium of the four regional community centres and Mount Barker Council. The Community Centres are The Hut Community Centre (Aldgate), Mount Barker Community Centre, Torrens Valley Community Centre (Gumeracha) and The Summit (Norton Summit).

The Hut Community Centre is the lead agency in the consortium and employs Esme Barratt as the regional coordinator of HCC.

We want to know what you think is missing in the Hills in regards to programs and activities. Please take 5 minutes to complete our brief online survey at the snazzy new Hut website. Click on the Hills Connected Communities tab then follow the link, or follow the link here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/HCCgaps
