FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Mr Allomes enjoying the Year 11 Hospitality Cafe

Term 1 has been an eventful start to the year with many outstanding student achievements, many noted in this month’s newsletter. In celebration of our 2016 HSC achievements it is pleasing to note that 40% of our graduates received offers for courses at university. 10% have undertaken a TAFE course, 3% have taken up offers at private colleges, 12% gained apprenticeships/traineeships, 20% are working either full or part time and 2% have entered the defence force. Unfortunately, we have not been able to contact all of our students to ascertain what they are doing in 2017. During this term our maintenance program has involved the cleaning and removal of vegetation from the library stairwell. During the holiday period a section of the administration block will be painted as will A block corridor. Unfortunately, again this year we have had to transfer teaching and learning funds to general cleaning due to the ongoing graffiti especially in the boy’s toilet. This term SASS and teaching staff will undergo training in the new state-wide finance and student administration system called LMBR. This new system will be rolled out to all schools mid-term 2 and will mean some changes to how we do business with parents and students. Information flyers will soon be released to assist with the rollover.

Upcoming dates:

ATTENDANCE PROCEDURES AT THE SENIOR CAMPUS

As the school year begins, it is a good time to remind everyone of the procedures to follow for roll call, early leavers and absences. ABSENCES If a student is absent they must bring a note within 5 days explaining that absence, otherwise it is an unexplained absence on their report. This is a Department of Education requirement. You will receive an SMS telling you of your child’s absence. A reply to this, a note on return, a phone call or a response on the school App will be sufficient as an explanation for absence. HOLIDAYS There is a special form to request the Principal’s approval for holidays during school term for when this cannot be avoided. This can be collected at the front office. We can no longer do exemptions for holidays. EXEMPTIONS If your child is absent for ill health, a death in the family or other compassionate grounds we are able to exempt them from attendance. This means that their percentage of attendance is not affected by the absence. Please let us know if this occurs so that we can also offer support to your child on return, and work sent home if required. ROLL CALL Students must be in roll call EVERY day at 8.30am, unless they have flexible attendance. Please attend ONLY your assigned roll class. In Year 11 or 12, flexible attendance may allow them to arrive for Period Two or to leave at lunch if they have Period 5 off. They MUST SIGN IN at the front office when they arrive to school, otherwise they will be marked absent for the day. EARLY LEAVERS PASS For an early leaver’s pass, the note must contain Student’s full name, Roll Call or Year, the date, time leaving school, reason for pass and a contact phone number. This note goes to the front office before school or at recess, who will issue a pass to show to the classroom teacher or teacher on the gate. Please try to avoid medical appointments during Tuesday sport as sport is a mandatory requirement as part of the School Certificate. Students cannot choose to miss sport. Pass outs are for medical or family emergencies, not to go out for lunch. Students are NOT permitted to leave the school grounds during lunch time, unless they have a note from home for a leaver’s pass. Leaving school grounds is considered truanting. LATENESS If a student arrives at school after 8.40am without a note or call from a parent or carer, a call will be made home so that you are aware of the tie your child is arriving at school, and a detention will result if there is no valid reason. Persistent lateness to school will result in a suspension caution.

TRUANCY Teachers or Head Teachers will impose detentions for truancy and persistent truancy may result in suspension cautions or eventual suspension.

Remember the goal is to receive the best education possible, and that can only happen when students are in the classroom.

YR 12 VISUAL ARTS TO ART EXPRESS

Year 12 Visual Arts travelled down to Sydney to view Art Express at the Art Gallery of NSW earlier this term. Eight of the fifteen students in the class attended and gained valuable insights into what it takes to make a quality body of work for the Visual Arts HSC. Other sections of the state art gallery were also visited with the most popular being the contemporary section where technology and interactivity are an enjoyable element. Everyone had a good day and didn’t mind getting a little wet when walking across the

domain. Three umbrellas between eight didn’t quite cut it!
