Laurel Gazette
MARCH 2018
Palm Sunday, March 25 – We recall Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem
as joyful Jews waved palm fronds. Our choir presents the cantata, The Lenten Sketches, which render the poignant scenes of Jesus’ last week in moving chorus. Inspiring programs by our choir always provide a special opportunity to invite a friend to hear some great music. We receive the One Great Hour of Sharing offering that day. Maundy Thursday, March 29 – Traditionally, we celebrate the Lord’s Supper on this somber night which recalls Jesus’ last meal with his disciples. Pastor Mark will give us a first person look at the Apostle Peter on that tortured night when he denied his Lord. Our choir will sing and we will celebrate communion in the chancel passing around the cup and the bread within groups.
EASTER AT LAUREL – APRIL 1!
(“No foolin’!”) SUNRISE WORSHIP – Once again Laurel will hold our own
Sunrise Worship Service for the community at 7:00 am outside the sanctuary (inside if the weather doesn’t permit). We’re pleased that clergy and members from other area congregations will join us. With the rising of the sun, we’ll celebrate the Good News that the tomb is empty: our Savior lives! We’ll sing the familiar hymns of Easter and hear an inspiring message. Invite your friends to join us for this special time of worship.
COMMUNITY BREAKFAST – All sunrise worshippers are invited to stay for breakfast at 8:00 am. Early birds for Sunday School or 10:00 am worship are welcome as well. We will hold the Adult Class at 8:45 am as usual, meeting in the Parlor.
EASTER FESTIVAL WORSHIP – Our 10:00 am worship begins with the traditional joyous greeting of “He has risen indeed.” Worshippers are invited to bring flowers from their gardens (or use those available at the worship service) to give life to our “Flowering Cross” in the sanctuary. Our choir will inspire us with joyful Easter anthems and Pastor Mark will once again give voice to the miraculous news that shook and continues to shake our world. Following worship, there will be an Easter Egg hunt for young children on the lawn. Easter Sunday is a particularly wonderful opportunity to invite friends and family to come to Laurel!

NEW RECEPTACLE TO RECYLE PLASTIC, GLASS & METAL
The church office has been recycling paper and cardboard for years, but now there is a receptacle in the kitchen to recycle plastic and metal containers. All aluminum and metal cans are acceptable and also plastic and glass that have the recycle logo on
them. The recycled items will be taken to the County recycling area when the receptacle is full.

LORD’S SUPPER TO BE CELEBRATED ON SECOND SUNDAY

HELP THE CHURCH GET READY FOR EASTER VISTORS!
Join us for the Spring Work Day, Saturday, March 24 starting at 9:00 am. There will be jobs at all levels for folks both inside and outside the church building. Many kinds of cleaning supplies and tools will be at the church, but you may want to bring your own depending upon what you want to do.
This year received on Palm Sunday, March 25, this annual offering taken by many denominations unites us in efforts to provide emergency assistance in the case of
disasters, help to distressed peoples trying to make it on their own, and hunger relief in this country and beyond. Victims of every disaster in this country and in many other nations are helped by this offering. Please give generously.
REPORT FROM CHURCH SIGN COMMITTEE
The committee charged with bringing to the congregation a proposal for a new church sign on Staples Mill Road has heard presentations from companies that install both digital and traditional
signs. Current thinking is that the new sign should be located in approximately the same location as the current one but would be larger, in either
format.
The existing brick base cannot be used due to its lack of structural reinforcement. The committee’s work, however, is on hold for the moment pending the availability of funds that may be donated to partially fund a digital sign. Without additional funding, a digital sign would likely not be considered due to its greater cost, and so the committee will be on hiatus from a few months until the anticipated additional funds are available. The committee is composed of Marshall Chamberlayne, Bernie Cheatham, Bonnie Poff, Mark Sprowl and Billie Summers, chairperson.

COAL PIT DONATIONS
Please continue to bring in snacks for Coal Pit Learning center. We will be collecting until March11. Place items in the narthex. Please no peanut products. Thank you.
CAMP HANOVER IS OPEN FOR FUN!
Our neighborhood campground Camp Hanover is now accepting applications for overnight and multi-day camp opportunities for all ages of children
throughout the summer. You can register at www.camphanover.org. Brochures and a list of
camps for specific ages are also available at the church.
To get a taste of camp life, families are invited to attend “Camp Fun Day” on Sunday, April 22 from 2:00-5:00 pm at the Camp. There will be nature walks, camp tours, a climbing wall, hay rides, fishing, boating, games and arts and crafts. Rain or shine, it’s a free event for all ages.
Camp Hanover always needs volunteers for the camping season. RN’s, LPN’s, EMT’s and paramedics are needed for each week of camp, especially to check out kids at the beginning. There are also openings for camp counselors (no experience necessary), drivers, cooks, dishwashers or those who can volunteer a few hours to check campers in on Sundays. Volunteers can sign up to work one week at a time. For more information, call 804-779-2811. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
NEW TELEVISION AND DVD PLAYER SUPPORT CLASS
Our new Samsung flat screen television and DVD player were used recently for the Sunday morning adult class’s “Half-Truths of the Bible: ‘God Helps Those Who Help Themselves’ and Other Things the Bible Doesn’t Say.”
The church had been without a large flat screen television since a theft several years
ago. The new TV and player were made possible through the use of memorial funds from the Emma Arthur fund. The TV is dedicated to her memory as a means “to inform and entertain God’s children of all ages.”
Everyone is welcome to attend the Congregational Luncheon on March 18 immediately after service. We will be serving salad and spaghetti. See you there! Member Care

We met on February 4 and had prayer and member concerns.
We discussed the luncheon on Sunday February 18. We want to get an accurate number of people
attending. We are having meatloaf, mashed potatoes, rolls, green beans, gravy and tea.
We decided to have spaghetti and salad for our March luncheon. We are waiting to see if Duane finds a speaker.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ GINGERBREAD PRESCHOOL 40 YEARS CELEBRATED
During the 2017-18 school year, Gingerbread Cottage Preschool is celebrating forty years of operation, many of those years right here at Laurel. On Sunday, February 11, Debbie Long, Director of the Preschool, spoke during the worship service,
outlining a little of GCP’s history and what they’re up today.
Several of the staff were also present in worship. Pastor Mark noted the preschool, although not explicitly religious in nature, represented values of integrity and concern for others that are present in all the great faiths of the world. He led the congregation in prayer for the Preschool.
FOR ONCE, IT’S GOOD TO BE IN “HOT WATER!”
Like the Lord responding to the complaints of the Israelites in slavery in Egypt, the Stewardship & Property has listened to the suggestion of our kitchen helpers and installed a small hot water heater in the kitchen. Years of suffering through water that lost its heat from the long trek from basement water heater is at an end. Thank you S&P and especially Marshall Chamberlayne and Pete Rose.
RECIPE FOR MARY YELTON’S MEATLOAF 1 lb. hamburger 1 egg 2 slices bread, crumbled 1 small onion, chopped 1 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce 1 (8oz) can tomato sauce 3 Tbsp. brown sugar 3 Tbsp. vinegar 1 Tbsp. mustard (prepared) Mix together hamburger, egg, bread crumbs, onion, Worcestershire sauce and 4 oz. tomato sauce (reserving remaining 4 oz.) Pat into loaf pan. Mix remaining 4 oz. tomato sauce, brown sugar, vinegar, and prepared mustard and pour over meatloaf. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour, uncovered.
On Sunday, January 28, the congregation met for
its annual meeting after worship.
During the meeting, we…
Heard a financial report for 2017 and the Budget for 2018 (Slides from that presentation may be found elsewhere in the Gazette.)
Elected Michael Henderson, Margaret Fitch and Bernie Cheatham to become members of the Congregational Nominating Committee who will nominate candidates for ruling elder in 2018. They join Becky Zolnai who was appointed by the Session.
Recognized and thanked church officers: Session Clerk Carl Carpenter, Treasurer Rob McBane and Bookkeeper Wayne Deisher.
Had a moment of silence and prayer to remember those who had “graduated to the church triumphant” in 2017: Lorraine Binford, Lucille Hayes, Nancy Kinch, Dixie Mertens and Phoebe Toney.
Heard reports about the ministry of the three Session ministry teams: Worship & Education, Stewardship & Property and Member Care & Mission.
Approved a 3.5% increase in the Pastor’s compensation package for 2018.
Held a state-mandated meeting of the church corporation and affirmed the Session’s choice of Becky Zolnai as President of the corporation (a busy lady!)
Heard affirmations or proposals for ministry from the congregation including considering installing new flooring in the kitchen, initiating joint activities with Hungary Road Baptist Church, retaining the gifts for needy families at Christmas which some find very meaningful, creating a “café” for seniors to hold conversations and holding another Coal Pit Education Center Christmas dinner this year. Members were also encouraged to share their ideas about speakers or themes for all-church luncheons.
Participated in a presentation by Pastor Mark about what brings people to church and the importance of the “Why” of ministry based on a book by Simon Sinek.
