MARCH 2018 Greetings, Today is a great day to be a Mustang! I often close my monthly newsletter with this statement. I decided to open this month’s letter because there is so much to be proud of in our district. In this letter I will cover some of those “proud” items, and I will also paraphrase a few business items in the world of education. First and foremost, it is important to make a positive shout out to our East Marshall students. This past month the Iowa Assessments were conducted. At some of our buildings, the attendance was the most consistent attendance as compared to the last several years. Assessment week is not easy. The schedule is not routine, assessments can be less than exciting, and the winter blues can easily set in. Our school administrators are proud of our Mustang students who made every effort to do their best. Along with the assessment week positive comments, it was noticed throughout the school district that our student are truly focusing on Mustang Strong. So many acts of Mustang Strong were displayed this past month, ranging from being accountable for actions to expressing empathy during times of emotional uncertainty. I continue to be proud of the makeup of students we have enrolled at East Marshall Schools. Students, keep up the good work! In this letter’s opening I mentioned that I would cover some business items. The state legislature is in full swing. The first phase of funnel week for newly presented legislation has occurred. It appears state supplemental aid will increase by one percent. This is not enough to sustain our needed spending authority, per state guidelines. Any communication efforts made by our patrons to our representatives will assist our positions. A couple items that patrons can emphasize when reaching out to legislators are extending the expiration date of the SAVE funds (penny sales tax) and transportation funding support. East Marshall will benefit greatly by both topics. One last business item I will briefly review is our priority in sustaining a safe school environment for our students. During the first week of February a letter was emailed to the parents of each student explaining next steps in training students in the A.L.I.C.E. philosophy. These trainings will be age appropriate and will be conducted collaboratively with local law enforcement during the months of March and April. Parents with questions may contact any of the school administrators at any school administrative office. In conclusion of this letter, I congratulate all of the student successes that our district has experienced over the last several weeks. Our school district has students with talents that can make us all proud to be Mustangs. I express a sincere thank you to all of the individuals who make East Marshall Schools a great place. This includes students, parents, patrons, and our employees. Yours in Education, Anthony Ryan Superintendent

Please congratulate Hunter Hughlette who sang a nearly perfect solo to receive a 1+ which is the top score one can receive! He is a very good singer!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The middle school P.E. class has been incorporating more technology into the classroom to aid with cardiovascular and muscular endurance, muscular strength, agility, and flexibility to educate and to improve our health. This is done in the beginning of class during warm-ups before we begin the unit activity. It's been cool to hear from some students that they have downloaded either "Sworkit" or "One Song Workout" to their phones or tablets to do more exercise at home.

Thank-you to all the families that donated money to the American Heart Association. I know how much this cause means a lot families in our community and all over our country.

-Mr. Goodrich

On the final days of January, our East Marshall Elementary staff and students celebrated the 100th day of school with many activities. The average of our elementary enrollment appeared to have increased significantly as staff and students were invited to dress up as 100-year-old gentlemen and ladies.

So proud of our second and third graders as they completed the Iowa Assessments during the week of February 5th. A special assembly for these students took place on February 2nd. The students enjoyed the Game Show that gave tips to be successful during the testing week such as eating a healthy breakfast and getting a good night’s sleep. Students received a gold medal with the word “Believe” to inspire them to do their best. A special thank you to the parents who donated snacks for our students during this week. Students loved them!

2nd Grade Sets Personal Goals Returning to school in January, the 2nd grade team wanted to create a lesson for our students to reflect on a personal goal for 2018. Using Dan Britton’s book, One Word that will Change Your Life as a guide, we brainstormed together all the words that it means to be MUSTANG STRONG. Our students came up with great words, here are just a few: Respectful, Thoughtful, Creative, Hard Working, Optimistic, Try, Strong, Responsible, and Enthusiastic. We were so impressed with our students thinking. We asked our students to reflect on which words they really do well with. Our rooms were buzzing with conversation about all these great characteristics. All of our students were able to see several of these traits in themselves. Next, we asked our students to look at our list again. This time we asked them to reflect on a word that they could work on. A trait they need to focus on. An area that they need to make some improvements on. Again, our rooms were buzzing with conversation. We could tell our students were really soul searching to come up with a word to be their personal goal. After students chose their one word they wrote about why they chose this word to be their goal for the year, as well as what they are going to do to reach their one word goal. Even though January has passed, this word hasn’t disappeared. As teachers we bring up this personal word from time to time. We are letting our students know that working on goals isn’t just a quick fix and then move on, we learn to always revisit and reflect how we are doing. This is MUSTANG STRONG! Way to go 2nd graders!
