March 2018
Another very successful Valentine’s Dinner for over 100 members got the new season off to a flying start on February 14th, and what is already being widely acclaimed as the best “Happy Hour” ever closed out the month’s social activity on the 23rd. Attended by just over 120 members and guests, this raucous event featured the dynamic sounds of Doug Iracki and Sean Carey, who presented their renditions of hit songs by both Dave Matthews and many other top recording artists. The duo welcomed several members (you know who you are!) on stage to join in the frivolity and many in attendance sang and
danced along with the tunes well into the night. Be sure to circle Friday, March 23rd, on your calendars as the boys will be back to entertain at that “Happy Hour” as well.
Here’s a look at some other special events that will be offered in addition to the party mentioned above during the next several months:
“Chef’s Table”… Saturday, March 17th, at 6:30 pm. This extremely popular six course wine pairing dinner sells out every month so don’t hesitate to call in your table soon. Reservations will be taken on a first come first served basis as always.
“Easter Egg Hunt and Brunch”… Saturday, March 31st, at 11:00 am. The Easter Bunny himself will be on hand to distribute gift bags and holiday balloons to all of the children after they have had a chance to search for well over one
thousand colorful plastic eggs filled with surprises. A delicious buffet brunch will be available for all in attendance as well and Peter Cottontail will be happy to pose with all of the kids for Easter pictures.
“Easter Sunday Buffet”… Sunday, April 1st, from 12:00-4:00 pm. A fantastic buffet featuring breakfast, lunch and dinner items will be available in the Grill Room for four hours and the Easter Bunny will be back to spread holiday cheer while passing out colorful balloons to all of the children. This event is always well-attended so please make your reservation early in order to lock in your desired time to dine.
“Libation Celebration”… Saturday, May 5th. The last two year’s editions of this now famous party have featured crowds of over 200 members and guests. The multi-talented “Flaxy Morgan Band” will return to the scene of the crime once again this year by popular demand and will surely keep you on the dance floor all night.
“Mother’s Day Buffet”… Sunday, May 13th from 12:00-5:00 pm. Another amazing buffet featuring a variety of entrees and our ever popular carving station will be presented by our talented culinary team. A special menu for both this event and Easter Sunday will be sent to you well in advance of the occasion.
“Opening Cocktail Party”… Sunday, May 20th, at 6:00 pm. This is the event that everyone looks forward to as the Club treats all members in attendance to gourmet dining and two hours of open bar. Once again, we will be happy to be welcoming many new members into the Club as well as welcoming back all of our members who had gone south for the winter months.
Additional social events will be added to the calendar as clubhouse availability is determined so please check your monthly newsletters, accompanying calendars and all emails from the Club for further updates. Please be reminded that reservations are essential for all club functions.
I’m looking forward to another great year at Glen Oak and hope you will take advantage of the many special events we are offering. It’s your club and I truly wish that it is your favorite place to be!

Children’s Easter Egg Hunt & Brunch
Saturday, March 31st -11:00am
Are you ready for a good old-fashioned Easter Egg Hunt? Let’s
hope so, because we’re planning one and we need you to be there in
order to make it successful. So get out the Easter baskets and bring
the children over to the Club on Saturday, March 31st, at 11:00am.
All of the kids will have a chance to “search” for hundreds of
prize-filled eggs as soon as everyone has arrived. But please, don’t
be late as the children will be eager to begin the search right on
time and it is very difficult to delay the start of the event.
Following the hunt, an irresistible buffet brunch will be served,
featuring a menu designed especially with the entire family in
mind. There will be great food, lots of prizes and a special
guest...the Easter Bunny himself!
All in all, it promises to be a very special day so don’t miss it!

As of this writing we’ve been enjoying a mild February, and can look forward to another great season in the not-too-distant future. Let’s make 2018 the best golf year yet!
Leagues
Information on the leagues has gone out via e-mail through Foretees. They will start in the last week of April and conclude in August. We will be conducting all signups on the Foretees site. When you sign up please make sure you answer any prompted questions accurately and thoroughly. If you are looking for a partner you may sign up as an individual so that others can see you are available. Contact the golf shop if you need any assistance. Below is a brief description of each of the leagues for those of you who are unfamiliar with the programs.
Tuesday Twilight Men’s League – Teams of two which play 9 hole matches on Tuesday afternoon / evening. Flights are created based on a combination of team handicap and time preference. Each pairing will play two individual matches and a fourball match at 90% of handicap.
Wednesday Ladies Twilight – Teams of two, shotgun starts at 5 PM. Each week teams will play a 9 hole better ball match at 90% of handicap. Big fun afterward on the side patio!
Thursday Men’s Scratch League – Teams of two, afternoon / evening tee times on Thursdays. The Gold Conference plays from the gold tees, and the Blue conference from the blues, or if eligible, the whites. Flights are based on combined team handicap, but no strokes are given in the matches themselves. Tee times are assigned weekly by lottery. There are 6 points per pairing up for grabs each week, determined by individual and team matches.
Subs – Substitutes are in great demand for all three leagues. Subs must have a valid GHIN handicap. If you don’t have a partner, can’t commit to play every week, or simply want to meet as many other golfers as possible this is a great way to get involved without being obligated to participate weekly. Please contact the golf shop if you would like to be added to the sub lists.
Special offer from the GAP for golf members! Use this link to sign up for complementary subscriptions to Golf Association of Philadelphia Magazine and Golf Digest. https://gapgolf.wufoo.com/forms/m1dz2jpo1rzexfi/
Driving Range
The driving range will open as soon as tee and ground conditions allow, usually in the beginning of April. If the landing area is soft enough that it is likely we will lose a significant number of balls we will start the season using old and / or mismatched balls. We will switch to the standard offering when the field firms up adequately.
General Etiquette Reminders
Please bear in mind the guidelines below, which are by no means exhaustive. Compliance is essential to ensure all members have a quality of experience befitting our club.
• Make sure you play without delay. Arrive to the tee on time and maintain
pace with the group in front of you. During times of low volume play you should invite a faster group behind you to play through. We will include helpful hints and tactics on how to play briskly in the newsletter through the year. The professional staff is happen to offer free, friendly, and discrete counseling to anyone who would like assistance in learning to play more quickly.
• Replace / repair divots, rake bunkers, and fix your pitchmarks and one other
on each green. Remember, never lever the turf upward; always push toward the middle, starting with the back of the pitchmark.
• When using the natural grass on the range position each ball directly behind
the divot you just made. You will use far less turf that way, and preserve the playing surface for players coming after you.
• Do not hit balls over the net on the range. A ball hit over the net presents a lethal hazard to players around the 16th green and 17th
tee. From a financial perspective, it complicates recovery and increases loss or destruction of the balls, which of course leads to increased expense. Yellow, limited flight balls are provided daily for players who may exceed the confines of the range.
• If your group tends toward exuberance, consider who is sharing the course with you and adjust your noise level accordingly.

News from the Golf Pro Bob Sedlak
Member and 1 or 3 Guest Tournaments
There has been a long-standing issue with people signing up for our enormously popular Member and 1 or 3 Guest tournaments, only to cancel shortly before the event. Since members on the waiting list receive only short notice in such circumstances they are frequently unable to participate when a spot opens up. To combat this issue the Board has adopted the following rule: If a member signs up for one of these events more than five days ahead of the tour-nament, and subsequently cancels within five days of the event, he or she will not be eligible to play in the next one. Out of respect for your fellow members please do not sign up for a member-guest unless you are reasonably sure you can field a team, and then fill your group as quickly as possible.
Handicap Score Posting
Improving compliance with the USGA guidelines on score posting will be a point of emphasis this year. All postable rounds played on USGA rated golf courses should be entered into the GHIN as promptly as possible. Simply put, any round that is played in the active posting season (April 1 – October 30 in our area) should be posted unless you are playing alone. 7-12 holes consti-tutes a 9 hole round, and 13 or more can be posted as an 18 hole round. To calculate the score to post for a hole that you did not play, simply add the number of strokes you would normally be allocated on a given hole to par for the hole, e.g. handicap of 16 would take a bogey on handicap holes 1-16, and par for 17 & 18. The golf staff will be happy to assist you with any questions! Full guidelines on what constitutes a postable round can be found here: http://www.usga.org/content/usga/home-page/Handicapping/handicap-manual.html#!rule-14379
GAP Matches
GAP Team Matches – The Golf Association of Philadelphia organizes this series of interclub matches, which will be held on the Sundays of April 22nd & 29th, and May 6th. Glen Oak has three teams entered in this year’s matches. Six Glen Oak members from each team play at home, and six play away. The matches are usually fairly even in terms of skill level. The GAP Team Matches are an excellent opportunity to play some of the finest golf courses Eastern Pennsylvania and South Jersey have to offer, and provide the mix of competition and camaraderie that is one of golf’s defining characteristics. The entry form for the matches is included in this newsletter.
Junior Golf
Glen Oak takes pride in having a forward thinking and inclusive mindset toward our junior golfers, who are the future of the game and our club. To support and continue that philosophy, it is critical that our junior golfers understand the responsibilities and pro-cedures that govern their use of the facilities. An e-mail will be going out to parents of junior golf members prior to the season detailing privileges, guidelines, and expectations for juniors. Please share with your kids, and confirm they understand the materi-al.
Junior Playing Privileges Test Juniors under 11 years old must be accompanied by an adult when using the golf course or practice facilities at Glen Oak. Juniors 11 or older who wish to use the facilities without adult accompaniment must pass the junior playing privileges test, which is ad-ministered by members of the professional staff. The test encompasses points of safety, etiquette, and care of the golf course, as well as an evaluation to ensure the junior is capable of playing well enough to maintain pace on the golf course. Please contact the golf shop with any questions regarding this policy.
Spring Clinics
Our Spring clinics are scheduled for April 14th, 21st, and 28th, and May 5th. The clinics are a great opportunity to introduce youngsters to the game, and culminate in a tournament, which parents are encouraged to attend. We have junior equipment available to borrow for those without clubs. Please call the golf shop to sign up.

Green Report…Gino Marchetti, Superintendent
The winter looks to be coming to an end and the big question is “how did the greens make it through this year”? We have been monitoring them all winter and removing ice and water when needed. We have brought in a few plugs from some greens to see how they have weathered the winter. So far everything is looking good. We are not out of the woods yet but as long as we do not have a huge temperature swing we should be ok. Below are some pictures of the plugs:
Number 5 Number 9 Number 18
This is 1 week of coming out of dormancy and growth. So far there is about a 1/2 in of new growth with more plants starting to sprout.
Currently, we are concentrating on course clean up. There are many ground out stumps that need to be cleaned up and back-
filled. We are doing this the best we can without making more of a mess for ourselves to clean up at a later time due to the amount of moisture in the soil. Clean up will continue until we remove the green covers. Then we will be concentrating on any repairs that are needed on the greens, replacing sod strips and the extra holes that are on the greens. This will most likely be a few weeks away. Tee times are right around the corner for 2018.
Thank you
Gino
Gino Marchetti Superintendent
2018 Men's Twilight League
The 2018 Twilight League season at Glen Oak will begin on April 24th. The entry fee is $40 per player. Players under 65 will play from the blue tees. Players who are 65 or older as of April 1, 2018 may play the white tees and players who are 80 or over as of the same date may play the green tees with handicap deductions as specified in the USGA handicapping system. Players must stay on the tees they elect to play for the entire season.
Complete rules and schedules will be available in the Golf Shop by April 15th. Sign ups will be
on Foretees. When you sign up you will be asked for your 1st and 2nd time preferences, expressed in one hour blocks that may overlap (i.e. 1st preference 3-4, 2nd preference 3:30-4:30). If you are without a partner you may sign up on Foretees as an individual, allowing other people needing partners to see who is available. Please contact the golf shop if you are interested in serving as a substitute. Registration deadline is March 24th.
Starting Times
The committee will assign flights based on a combination of handicap and desired tee time. Depending on the number of requests, groups asking for the earliest or latest tee times may be placed in separate flights.
The committee’s goal will be to honor your first or second request in the great majority of the matches. Please consider your preferred times carefully as every effort will be made to accommodate your requests. It will be very much appreciated if you can be at least somewhat flexible with regard to your tee times.
Thank You,
Howard Rothenberg
Tuesday Night Chairman
2018 THURSDAY NIGHT SCRATCH LEAGUE The Men’s Thursday Night Scratch League will begin on Thursday, April 26th and will run fifteen weeks. The entry fee is $105.00 per golfer, billed by the Glen Oak office, and will be 100% returned in gift certificates, prizes and entertainment. The format remains two man teams with divisions based on combined team course handicaps. The player on each team with the lower handicap index as of October 31, 2017 will be the A player. As in years past, a pace of play policy will be in effect that prescribes a maximum time for a round, and penalties if that maximum is exceeded. Please read the policy before returning your application. GOLD DIVISION All play is from the gold tees. The minimum combined handicap from the gold tees for the gold division is thirteen (no minimum handicap for the B player), as of October 31st, 2017. BLUE DIVISION Play will be from the blue tees, except where noted below. Combined handicap from the blue tees remains a minimum of fifteen and maximum of thirty four (one player must have at least a ten handicap or higher), as of October 31st, 2017. NOTE: The White Tees may be used by players 65 and older in the blue division whose age and blue tee handicap as of April 1st total 85 or greater. Players will play the same tee all season, regardless of changes to age or handicap. Each division will crown a champion.
Sign up on Foretees Registration deadline is March 27th. If you do not have a partner you may sign up as an individual on Foretees, or contact the golf shop for assistance. Sincerely, Jody McGrail Thursday Night League Chairman
2018 Ladies’ Twilight League

Starting date, weather permitting, will be April 25th.
